I've never had venezuelan food but I was SO happy to have tried it because it was fantastic! I literally tried one of everything I was so excited. I tried their tequenos which has like a pillsbury croissant dough taste with cheese in the inside and they were delicious! I wish they warmed up a bit more but that's okay. I also tried their chicken empanadas and I love the cornmeal (i think?) dough they use to make them! The chicken could have been a little bit more tender and moist. I also had an arepa with their shredded beef and loaded it with toppings and just wow. it was seriously delectable, i was so impressed! and i did also get their cachapa and the cachapa alone had such a good taste, the sweet flavor blew me away. I got it with their pork carnitas which were just okay but with everything paired together, i enjoyed it. would definitely come back! read more

Definitely not entirely authentic Venezuelan arepas but still decent quality food. The best part about authentic arepas is they are served very hot and are slightly crispy on the outside from grilling, but fluffy on the inside. These were served slightly warmed and dry on the inside. Still a good introduction to Venezuelan cuisine but it felt americanized. It felt like the food had been sitting a little too long too. I would have liked to see signature arepas alongside the full "make your own" such as pabellón or reina pepiada. I cannot speak on the authenticity of the other dishes they offered, but if you are looking for true authentic arepas this is not exactly the place. Although it was not a bad experience either. This was my first time at Somos Arepas (as well as my first time trying an arepa and cachapa) and I was pleased with my experience. I tried both the arepa and cachapa (corn pancake - which is a lot sweeter) and they were both good. The arepa is eaten as a sandwich and customized with whatever protein, veggies, cheese and sauce you want. The cachapa is eaten with a fork and knife, and same as the arepa, completely customizable. Just finished visiting Somos for a quick snack, loved the place. Ambiance is vibrant inside, plenty of space and lighting, sparking and clean. Menu is on the wall, pick your crust, fill it in with protein, pick your toppings and sauce. We tried the Venezuelan cheese sticks and each got an empanada, one chicken and the other beef. We also asked for a few sauces and the gentlemen was gracious enough to give us a solo small cup of them all. Sauces were impressive, especially the picante, flavorful and has a nice kick to it. We enjoyed dipping our cheese sticks in them. We each loved our empanada, was fairly sized and fried crispy. Meat was tender and juicy! Very good! Have never had Venezuelan food before so cannot speak for the authenticity but really enjoyed all the flavors and the ingredients were all very fresh. Everyone was very nice and friendly at the restaurant but my pick up time came and went. I got the chicken Arepa and it was delicious, the guacacasa sauce was also delicious. My only suggestion would be to spread the ingredients out more so you get some of everything in each bite. Some of my friends got bowls which looked really delicious and I would try that next time! I did take out but the inside was very cute and clean! Will definitely be back. Quick and easy lunch in the shelton area. read more

We have ordered take out probably 6 times since they opened and we love it. We have tried each of the variations (arepa, cachapa, and the bowl) and everything has been excellent. The food is always ready when we get there and while it's clear all the components are pre-done it always tastes fresh. My wife leaves toward the bowls, my son the cachapa and I go between the bowl and the cachapa and the arepa). The chicken is our favorite protein...the pork was a little greasy but not anything that would have made me avoid it - just not as enjoyable as the chicken. read more

I grew up in Venezuela, and I am sorry, but over there, when you order a cachapa, they cooked at that moment. Here in this place, they reheat mine and was not even hot enough. I almost canceled the order but I gave it the try. Not good. May be we came at the wrong time of the day. We also ordered a bowl and the rice and beans were in warmers. They tasted dry like yesterday's food. Fried plantain looks like leftovers. So sorry if the intention is venezuelan fast food is not the appropriate dishes to do so.
