I think part of the joy for them came because of the beginning sense of accomplishment that the program/teacher provides in terms of "reading" music and playing pieces almost immediately. (Reading is in quotes because initially it is color coded (rather than on a staff.) - And today we enjoyed our first recital: it was very well-organized, nice and short for the parents and a chance for the kids to perform. They loved the recital and got a great sense of accomplishment from it. I would highly recommend this program for beginners! (And from the super impressive performance today by some of the older students, it seems like continuing with the classes and the private instruction pays off.)
