(The pain was a 10 out of 10 for hours straight which is why I went to the ER). The performed an X-ray as well as physically examined my arm and said there was no break, but most likely a major tear. They sent me home with pain meds, and a muscle relaxer, and told me to see a specialist ASAP. I tried to schedule an appt. with an orthopedic surgeon, but the earliest appt. was more than a week out. Two days later I went to one of the highest regarded acupuncturists here in Napa. Upon examining my arm he said he would not be able to help me heal at all, but possibly could help reduce the pain, and urged me to see the orthopedic doctor as soon as I could. I told him I had the appt. already, and would gladly let him treat me for the pain. I walked in with pain being still 10/10... by the end of his treatment and for the next few days I was still in 24/7 pain, unfortunately his treatment did not reduce my pain at all. 5 days later the pain was still barely bearably, I decided to see Dr. Henderson at Optimal Health. Me and my children had visited him several times through the years, and I was always happy with his services and the results. He did an exam and then recommended acupuncture in conjunction with a treatment called FSM. In 1 treatment my pain went from a 10, down to a 2. I did not take any pain meds the rest of the day, as the pain went to a 0-2 throughout the day. I was completely surprised how much relief I got from only 1 treatment. Also he felt that the FSM treatment may help the torn muscles heal, which was music to my ears. By the time I saw the Ortho doc, I was only takin pain meds to sleep. He diagnosed my injury a most likely a "major rotator cuff tear", and ordered an MRI. While waiting for the MRI, I continued to see Dr. Henderson. I have had a total of 5 treatment from Dr. Henderson, and currently am taking no pain meds, even to sleep, also I have also regained about 35% movement of my arm. I cannot express enough how happy I am with the results, at first it seemed like surgery was mandatory, but based on how well I am healing, I think I may be able to avoid it all together. I cannot recommend Dr. Henderson and Optimal Health enough!!!!

Dr. Henderson was my first experience with acupuncture, after a recommendation from my doctor to…read moretry it out for my back pain. At first, I was impressed with the communication and organization from John at the front desk, and my first few treatments left me with great results. I left his office feeling physically and mentally better than before. However, there were moments that felt off. At my initial consultation, the doctor asked about the source of my pain which is primarily neck and shoulders. I told him I had x-rays done years ago and that doctor told me I had dextroscoliosis of the thoracic spine. "You mean cervical spine?" Dr. Henderson replied. I wasn't sure how to respond to him correcting my own diagnosis, so I said sure and brushed it off. At another appointment, I mentioned that I was experiencing pain in my lower back. So, he put the electric stimulation pads on my legs instead of my arms. From the start, I was very sensitive to the estim and required a good amount of aloe on the skin and a low setting on the machine. When he put the pads on my legs, they burned pretty badly. I spoke up about this, since he told me to always speak up when something hurts and I shouldn't sit through the session in pain. He replied that shaving the legs can make them more sensitive to the estim and, quote, "It's not my fault you shaved your legs before coming here." I was never told not to shave my legs and his tone was rather rude. At the next appointment, I asked for the pads on the legs because it did help my low back pain. Once again, the pads itched/burned so he turned the estim down and put on aloe. Before leaving the room, he asked if I was comfortable. I said that my legs still burned. He looked at me and said, "....AND?" with attitude. I was not sure how to respond. He angrily said, "Do you want me to shut the whole thing off?? Do you want me to move the pads? What do you want me to do?" Unsure how to respond to his anger, I said to move the pads. He left the room and I felt so disrespected. Pain continued in my legs and in one of the needles in my right hand. But I decided I would rather sit through the pain than deal with his attitude again. That was when I decided I cannot see a doctor who does not have good bedside manner and does not make me feel calm in that environment. I've been struggling with pain in my right hand ever since my last appointment. I wish I never went to this office and I feel nervous to ever try acupuncture again. Overall negative experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

I initially decided to seek out a new physician because I was extremely frustrated with the amount of time my previous doctor spent with me during the appointment. If I spoke to him for more than five minutes I considered myself lucky. Add to that the frustration of multiple lengthy delays in the waiting room when I had arrived 15 minutes ahead of time as requested. The final straw was when my doctor read a lab results wrong. Fortunately, I had reviewed them myself before the visit, and was able to correct his mistake. It's scary to think of the mistakes that likely routinely happen and go unnoticed by less informed patients. Dr. De Moraes has been spectacular. He spends the time with me to talk about my holistic well-being, rather than the symptoms that brought me to the clinic that day. He is personable, thoughtful, thorough and when I leave his office, or speak to him on the phone, I don't worry that something might have been missed. On one occasion the pharmacy I go to made a mistake on a prescription late on a Friday evening. I was sure I'd have to wait until Monday, but he was available to correct the pharmacy's mistake while I waited and there was no issue. I think what I like most is that he remembers my name as patient, which is what prompted this review. I saw him in the grocery store weeks after I'd seen him and he remembered my name, and asked how I was doing. How crazy is that? My previous doctor wouldn't have known me if I was the only person in the room. Would your doctor know you? I'm extremely happy with my decision to choose Dr. De Moraes as my physician. As I mentioned, I'm a healthcare professional myself and can be very critical of the broken system we all have to endure. My mother was under the care of Dr. Alex De Moraes at The Meadows Of Napa Valley Skilled Nursing…read moreFacility while convalescing from surgery for a small bowel obstruction. While the most alarming incident -- involving verbal abuse -- occurred just before her discharge, there were other episodes of negligence during her stay there that can be attributed to Dr. De Moraes. During her stay at the facility, my mother was having very severe breathing problems related to chronic heart failure and post surgery complications. Dr. De Moraes was very resistant to input from both family and cardiologist regarding my mother's heart failure-related breathing issues that are relieved by diuresis. He was extremely upset that I was advocating for urgent attention to this matter and he complained vigorously when I consulted with my mother's cardiologist from UCSF and asked her to call him. The first time Dr. De Moraes spoke to my mother's cardiologist, he denied any signs of fluid overload in my mother and rejected the possibility that this could be causing her breathing issues. Based on my experience as her main caregiver and, seeing that her breathing continued to worsen, I contacted my mother's cardiologist once more and asked her to please call Dr. De Moraes again to try to get him to begin diuresis urgently. After speaking to the cardiologist the second time, Dr. De Moraes finally proceeded to prescribe a version of the recommended treatment. However, Dr. De Moraes refused to administer the medication in the correct dosage and manner and, had my mother complied with De Moraes' dosing, it would have been in great excess of what has been determined as the maximum dosage she can tolerate without experiencing acute kidney injury. My mother, knowing this, was able to refuse the quantities that Dr de Moraes had prescribed and instead she took the medication according to her cardiologist ongoing recommendation. Soon the diuresis began and within 24 hours, her breathing began to improve dramatically. After a few days at The Meadows Skilled Nursing, my concern was increasing about the care of my mother was receiving under Dr. De Moraes and so I began to make plans for her discharge early the following week. Beginning on Saturday afternoon, my mother began having painful spasms and cramping in her rectum and anus. After multiple telephone calls to the facility alerting them of the situation and suggesting that they evaluate her for a fecal impaction, the head of nursing examined her late Sunday afternoon and consulted with Dr. De Moraes. I assume they concluded she had hemorrhoids because De Moraes prescribed Hydrocortisone cream which was administered 16 hours later. All day Sunday, all day Monday and all morning Tuesday, my mother was experiencing waves of spasms and cramping every 15 to 20 minutes and would cry out in pain with each of these episodes. I continued to make contact Head Of Nursing by phone and was told that the doctor had decided the plan of treatment and that I should not continue to interfere. Finally, on Tuesday morning when she was about to be transferred back home, I insisted that they not release her without the doctor examining her. O was told he Had already seen her but actually that was before the fecal impaction symptoms emerged. So I insisted they allow me to speak to the doctor directly by phone. He became very upset with me, calling me the worst family member he had ever had to deal with and saying that I was creating a "barrier of care." I told him that I was acting out of love for my mother and that I was very concerned that she was suffering from a severe fecal impactation and did not think it was a good idea for them to release her from their care without addressing the acute condition and determining whether or not she was in any danger. At that time he made several threats about refusing to discharge her and cutting off our ability to communicate by FaceTime during the rest of her stay (this is all taking place during the Covid-19 crisis and visitors are not allowed into the facility). He finally agreed to examine her and within five minutes was in her room. Upon examination, my mother was found to be fecally impacted and the impaction was cleared. She was then discharged and transported home. The pain did not come back and has not come back since. Her 48 hour ordeal was now over. However during the process Dr. De Moraes proceeded to verbally abuse my mother calling her the worst patient he had ever had, a disgusting person and other such things, and saying that she "didn't deserve to be alive." My mother has been very upset in the time since she experienced this abuse. Her memory of the constant waves of excruciating pain, the negligence and the doctor's verbal abuse run through her head throughout the day causing her a great deal of PTSD-like distress. She has had several nightmares involving the doctor as well.
