Disappointing experience -- especially after 40 years with an excellent dentist I'm new to Sonoma and chose Dr. Jason Groff through Delta Dental after breaking a tooth and needing a crown. Unfortunately, my experience was very different from what I had hoped for. At my first two appointments, the dental assistant performed most of the work, while Dr. Groff came in briefly for key parts of the procedure. After the permanent crown was cemented, my bite was not checked. I was concerned that my existing night guard would no longer fit, so the assistant adjusted it instead. Within two days, I developed severe nerve pain that woke me at 4 a.m. I returned expecting the dentist to evaluate the problem, but again, most of the interaction was with the assistant. The solution offered was a new night guard at no charge. I continued to have discomfort and eventually realized that my bite needed to be addressed. I also developed significant TMJ symptoms from compensating on the opposite side. At a subsequent appointment, Dr. Groff adjusted the crown and acknowledged that I had been compensating on the other side. Later, when I reported that the bite was still uncomfortable and the TMJ was worse, he told me the TMJ had nothing to do with the crown, which contradicted what I had previously been told. He then aggressively adjusted the crown and made a comment about continuing to grind it down "up to my head," which I found extremely uncomfortable and upsetting. I also had concerns about the practice's approach to dental hygiene. After having the same highly experienced dentist and hygienists for 40 years, I was surprised that my cleaning was very brief and largely performed by Dr. Groff with a sonic instrument, without the thorough tooth-by-tooth assessment I was accustomed to receiving. Most disappointing was my attempt to have a respectful conversation with Dr. Groff about my concerns and his practice protocols. Rather than discussing them, he became defensive and condescending, essentially telling me, "This is how I run my practice, and I'm not going to change it." I did not want to write a negative review. I tried to address my concerns directly, but I ultimately felt that, as a patient, they were not being heard or taken seriously. I am still experiencing discomfort and TMJ symptoms and will be seeking another dentist for follow-up care. For me, the issue is not the free night guard. I never went to this office for a night guard. The issue is the overall approach to patient care, communication, protocols, and follow-up. The world would be a better place if everyone practiced the Golden Rule: Treat everyone the way you would like to be treated. A simple, universal ethical guideline found in nearly every major culture and religion. read more

I don't like leaving negative reviews, but this was by far the worst dental experience I've ever had, and I'm 65. My dentist of 35 years in SF retired so I found a new one locally. The dental assistant, who was very nice, asked about my last cleaning/exam. I told her it was one year ago. The very first thing she did was polish my teeth, then flossed, then took some X-rays. Dentist came in. Asked if I had any pain. Took a very (very) quick look (no tools used) and said everything looks fine, then used the ultrasonic scaler briefly and said there was a bit of tartar here and there. Said everything was fine and left. Never mentioned the X-rays. He was there maybe 5 minutes tops. This was a first appointment, mind you. No history taken. No real examination. No, "hi my name is Dr ___." No acknowledgment that he's never seen or met me. In contrast, my prior routine always went like this. Dental hygienist 1st. * Periodontal Probe: A tiny measuring tool or "ruler" used to check gum health and measure the depth of the pockets around each tooth. * Explorer: A hooked metal tool used to check tooth surfaces for decay, cavities, and tartar buildup (calculus). * Ultrasonic Scaler: Rapid ultrasonic vibrations w/high-pressured water spray to gently/efficiently blast away stubborn plaque and tartar from above and below thegum line. * Hand Scaler / Curette: Manual scraping tools with varying curves and sharp, pointy ends designed to scrape away plaque and tartar in areas the ultrasonic tool can't easilyreach. * Polisher: A rotary tool with a soft rubber cup that spins a mild abrasive paste over the teeth to buff away surface stains and make the enamel smooth, leaving teeth bright and shiny. * Floss Then the dentist comes in * Medical and Dental History Review: asks about changes to current medications, overall health conditions, and any new symptoms like sensitivity or pain. * Radiographic Examination (X-rays): Digital images are taken (or prior images reviewed) to spot hidden issues like cavities between teeth, bone loss, impacted teeth, or root problems. * Physical Tooth Examination: Each checked for decay, cracks, wear, and the structural integrity of existing fillings or crowns. * Oral Cancer Screening: Inspects face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and tissues for any suspicious lumps, red or white patches, or abnormalities. * Bite and TMJ Check: Evaluates how teeth come together (occlusion) to detect teeth grinding, jaw popping, or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders. read more

I would be lying if I said that I chose this dental office for anything other than it is exceedingly close to my house. But everyone there is always totally nice and Gina the main receptionist is absolutely great. I've lived in my location for 13 years so I've been going to this place for a long time. The doctor that was there before was the definition of old school and the doctor there now and hence the vibe in general is sort of the definition of new school saying positive or negative about any just saying that's essentially my observation. I took the star off for one sort of petty reason I fully admit as someone who makes their living from music With the previous practice I actually commented about how amazed I was at the music selection. One day I specifically remember hearing Hawaiian music the whole time. The next time I would go in and hear jazz. Next time I would go in and it would be something totally different. To the point that I actually commented on it and they told me that someone different would pick the music for the whole day every day on rotation and that was awesome. Now, admittedly, I am not a fan of the same soul crushing modern rock hits that were wonderful the first 3500 times I heard them but basically never need to hear again. And granted you don't choose your dentist for the music they play in the background so not that big of a deal but admittedly it was noticeable. It's not that those are not great songs. It's not that I didn't absolutely love those songs at one point. I just basically got to a point that I don't need to hear them anymore. And who knows they might be a great comfort for someone if they hate the dentist. This Dental Office has always been spot on for scheduling and Front Desk Customer Service. The Dental Assistant who polished and flossed my teeth today 10/27/2025 may need skill development. I had to change dentist because the previous one dislocated my jaw, I came to this office recommended by a friend. I was already a patient for many months, I had some cleaning done and this was the second time I would replace a broken crown in this office. It is terrible to share that I had a horrible experience! The staff is kind but Dr Groff is rough. He won't have any time to talk to the patient, he will sit down for couple of minutes and most of the job is done by his assistant. Today he placed the crown and more than pressure, he shaked my head so badly. His assistant was there and he confirmed it was rough, I asked to have a conversation and Dr Groff in total defensive mode came to be even more rude, speaking aggressively and using Spanish, Portuguese and English like I was unable to have a normal conversation to understand the problem, like he was joking and being disrespectful. read more

Dr. Groff and his entire office staff are amazing! I live over an hour away and I feel it is more than worth the drive to be cared for by such kind, competent people. I had some issues that had been bothering me for years and I could never get a clear explanation of my options for treatment. In one short visit, Dr. Groff outlined a plan I could understand and got to work RIGHT THEN. As if the great results were not enough, his personal follow up has made me even more confident in my choice! Dr.Groff put a crown on one of my teeth, and then said that he was hoping this would work. If It gave me any trouble- to call them. After two more weeks of pain I called them to take another look at it. He wouldn't even make another appointment- he immediately reffered me to an Endodontist. I went to another Dentist and found out that it wasn't the tooth he had crowned, but the one RIGHT NEXT TO IT. Huge cavity in it. Why didn't they see this on their X-rays? It was right next to it. Not very thorough- and sloppy work. Plus- the next dentist recommended an extraction-for both teeth! So the crown was just a waste of my money and my time. I wouldn't go back to him if he was the last dentist on earth. read more

After moving to Sonoma 2+ years ago I've had difficulty finding a dentist I wanted to go back to. I needed to be seen for an old filling which was partially broken. I chose Sonoma Valley Dental for its convenient location. After my initial exam/cleaning they got busy prepping for a crown. The appointment was very quick which was REALLY nice. I went back today to get the permanent crown cemented. Another very fast appt. This is the best fitting crown ever (I've had a few). So happy I found Dr. Groff and his staff. read more

As a new patient of Dr. Groff I found him to be thorough without trying to "upsell" procedures. He took X-rays, cleaned my teeth, said everything looked good. Done and out the door. My decision to associate with his office was based largely on 1) recommendation by friends, 2) insurance issues 3) proximity to home. His office seemed well run and accommodating, I felt calm and relaxed while under the care of his staff. After a series of unfortunate dental interactions, and a final visit to a local dentist who sent me home with a distressing list of unexplained dental needs, I found myself with a referral to this office. I waited, terrified both emotionally and financially, but alas a crown "magically" (maybe I chew ice) fell off. Now more scared than ever I called Dr Groff's office and was quickly helped and quickly seen. Not only was everyone incredibly polite, kind and approachable- but the Dr quickly determined I did not need that massive list of very scary procedures. I left the office (mostly) all fixed and in awe. I couldn't be more grateful to the person who recommended them and to the entire staff at this office. Once he found out my insurance would take care of procedures, I suddenly had all kinds of things wrong with my teeth. $2500 + later of my costs and I'm going back to my old dentist. He doesn't explain anything, he'll hand you off to Carlos to finish a crown and I never did find out what title Carlos had. Carlos is rough like he's working under a hood of a car. There are no certificates of his education, he mumbles a lot and just has a weird personality. Dr. Kittleson never acted like that. Don't believe all of his positive reviews. read more

Great office. Dr. Groff and his team of wonderful assistants including Gina and Courtney are super friendly and easy to talk with. Dr. Groff is an excellent dentist- explained everything, including my options for treatment. (I had a problem with a tooth possibly requiring a new dental crown). But as I have stated in the beginning; the staff is super nice and very efficient, reminding me of future appointments, and sending text messages a day or two before. Yesterday I went to see Dr Jason Groff to take care of a distressing problem. A front tooth fell out and I did not have a local dentist. Additionally, I have an international flight in 3 days. After trying several phone calls to various dentists, I was fortunate to get an appointment with Dr Groff. I can't say I've never experienced such meticulous and compassionate care. Going to the dentist is not on the top of my list. The care and innovation used in my care has changed how I feel about dentistry. Beware! Just found out after a few years of regular every 6 months cleanings done by Dr. Groff himself that I have bone loss and deep gum pockets on several teeth that require a special (and pricey) cleaning procedure. During my time here, I was never advised to floss more nor was there any mention of issues with the health of my gums. This issue in quality of care is in addition to other serious concerns I was already aware of from my time with this office. read more

What can I say!! Sonoma Valley Dental is: AWESOME!! I am usually terrified of going to the dentist. Seriously!! I have had horrible experiences with dentists ; from near brutal work done by a military dentist to lackluster work performed by barely reputable pracitioners. Sonoma Valley Dental exudes focused and compassionate professionalism from the Front Desk, through to the Hygienist, Dental assistant and Doctor. It is an Amazing team! All obviously dedicated experts in their fields! It was the first time, in my experience, that a Dentist, himself, took the time to thoroughly go over my treatment options and their costs, with an emphasis on keeping the cost within reasonable parameters. I am not covered by insurance. I am paying out of pocket. Yes, good Dental work has a price. Of course! And, it's worth it!! Most amazing for me was that on the first visit, the Doc was able to give me back my smile!!!! Yes, there's a lot of work that still needs to be done on my poor neglected teeth.
