Sonshine Cleaners in Iowa City does excellent work -- I've been consistently impressed with the quality of their dry cleaning. But what really won me over was how they handled a problem. The night before a trip, I was packing and realized I didn't have some garments I'd dropped off. It was 9:30 at night and I was frustrated, so I texted their number not expecting much. I got a phone call back almost immediately, with an offer to bring the dry cleaning to me. Turned out one of my garments hadn't met their standards, so they'd sent it back for further cleaning -- which I appreciated. When I picked everything up after my trip, there was a $50 gift certificate waiting for me. Was I frustrated in the moment? Sure. But the response was fast, personal, and genuinely above and beyond. First of all, the prices are not listed ANYWHERE - not online or in the "store" - so I was pretty surprised to find out that the cost to dry clean 1 semi-formal (but really not that formal) dress was $37. Lesson learned, I guess, but I would have never assumed it would cost that much for a simple dress. I have never seen that kind of price at other dry cleaners I have used. Also, when I dropped it off, the sign said "anything dropped off today will be done by Wednesday." Well, Wednesday passed and I heard nothing. Once Friday rolled around and I still had not heard anything from them (besides the $37 charge to my credit card), I had to call to inquire, since I needed the dress for an event the next day. No answer. Someone (no idea who) from the store ends up texting me and tells me it "should be done" by the day that I need it by, and also, there is a stain on the dress that they could not remove. Okay, whatever. I just want the dang dress back. So at this point, I'm out $37 and the dress still has a stain on it (the whole reason I brought it in for dry cleaning). I get that maybe the stain just won't come out and that's fine/understandable, but now I am wondering what I paid $37 for. And to get it 3 days after they said it would done (8 days total). For one singular size extra small item. Learned my lesson and will definitely be using a different dry cleaner next time! Hopefully it actually ends up being done before I need it tomorrow - we'll see. Edit: picked it up this morning, hours before my event. The stains are very prominent on the front of the dress. Had I gotten it back on Wednesday, as I was promised, or even Thursday or Friday, I could have found another option before my event. Now it is the day of that the dress was ready to picked up, and it's too late to do anything about. Also, paid $37 for this, need I remind you. As a first time customer, I can say I will be a last time customer. Did not explain to me the digital service that could've been really cool, but when I went to pick up my garments, no one was attending, which I don't understand how they function for drop off, but I couldn't pick up my dry cleaning. no bueno. Later on I find out that I was supposed to have left a credit card on file. Again, all things that the first time customer might want to know about especially when they physically only 2 to 3 days per week and don't even post their hours or days of operations on their door, receipts or anything like that. I just want to say that my experience with Sonshine Dry Cleaners has been an absolute blessing! Our washing machine flooded our house and we haven't been able to do laundry for over a week. I reached out to Phoebe and her team, and they provide the most wonderful wash and fold laundry service! I drop it off, and when I get it back, it's washed, dried and folded nicely in a bag, and all I have to do is put it away! Very frustrating experience. Dropped off Monday, got a text it was ready Friday. I go to pick it up at the kiosk and I can't because they didn't process the payment. I left multiple messages over multiple days for them to process the payment but it was all ignored. The next week, I finally got someone on the phone and they processed it with no explanation or apology. There are no prices or TATs listed anywhere. Not online, not in store, and they don't answer the phone or return messages. I'd had a long, heavy coat done here before and it was about $21. My bill was over $30 this time. Worst part: the coat isn't even clean. Bad service. Bad quality. Expensive. Frustrating. Never again. They've gone waaaay downhill. read more

I make a 20-minute drive one-way just to use Sonshine. I recently discovered the business and have used their dry cleaning services. Specifically, dry cleaning for my husband's suits. Garments are ready when stated and they have extended hours during the workday - until 6pm. Convenient after-hours drop-off box, though I haven't used this. I plan to try their repair services, as I have a couple of coats that need to be fixed before next season. Pay at the time of drop-off. Text message alerts when your items are ready. Ruined an expensive comforter I bought last spring and started using just this winter. Reimbursed 70% the cost of the comforter plus the cleaning bill. Phoebe was nice about it but should have told me she was not going to reimburse full amount. Instead, just handed me an envelope with a check and letter. Good business practices include open communication and no surprises. Unfortunately, I left this shirt when I picked up the comforter (before I saw it was ruined). They did a substandard job - look at the sagging, stretched pocket. The shirt did not look like that when I took it in. read more

It was challenging to sign my items in as the waiting space is small and many customers were confused. Once I made my online account I handed my items over and did get them the day they said they were to be ready. With time and improved communication on checking items in I think this business will be even better. read more

They used to be the best dry cleaners in town, but now there is not even a number you can call. There is no customer service. I had to go there twice to get my order instead of once. Even though I ask them not to, they still put my sweaters on hangers so the shoulders get stretched out with hanger marks. They put a sticker next to the tag of my sweater that is burn into the fabric. The clothes also are not ready after 4 pm like they say. Who presses a sweater? It is just ruined. The worst part is that there is no one to complain too. Also, their website is wrong. They no longer have a drive up window. Beware. read more

I'm from Texas when they ask if I want a crease, there's a problem we crease jeans it's not asked. It was very expensive I've got an ironing board in my room I'll buy starch and starch my jeans next time...lesson learned the cashier was super nice. read more

To say I am happy I found SonShine Cleaners would be an understatement! I originally took my (then) fiance's suit jacket (needed for our wedding) to them after another dry cleaners had returned it to us with significant stains (stains that were NOT there when we dropped it off to them). SonShine not only was able to remove the stains, but they did it within a few days and we had the suit ready to go for the wedding! I have since taken other clothing to them and they have been wonderful to work with and always do a great job! This is my first yelp review, and it's for a drycleaner... didn't see that one coming. So, about a month ago my wife dropped off our winter jackets to have them cleaned. My peacoat was missing a large button on the front. I already had a replacement at home, but I wanted to get the coat cleaned prior to putting on the new button. When we got home with our coats, we discovered that Sonshine had already replaced the missing button with an EXACT match. Not only did they replace the missing button, it appears that they even tightened up the threads on the remaining buttons. My coat now looks like the day I purchased it. The best part is, they didn't even charge us for the button or the time to put it on. This is what I consider going above and beyond. This was our 4th time using their services, but this reinforces the fact that we will not be going anywhere else for our drycleaning needs. Keep up the amazing work! read more
