I recently had a concerning experience with Dr. Sophie Shirin, as she misdiagnosed the small rash/allergy on my hand. She first said I had eczema. Gave me medication that I used for 10 days. I went back to her office for the second time and she performed a biopsy on my hand. She told me she had to do some testing to see what it is. She also mentioned that she's going on a trip for two weeks and she'll get back to me. Clearly I was concerned. Is this a fungus? Is there some kind of growth? What kind of rash is this? .... Anyway, she cut out a piece of my hand that resulted in a significant scar. This ordeal has been both physically and emotionally distressing. When they called me from the office the last time to say what they found, they said that there is nothing that they can do and there was nothing wrong with my skin. I asked to speak to the doctor, and the woman told me that the doctor would call me and she never did . I left several messages only to hear back from the women from her office trying to collect monies. I refused to pay and said I need to talk for the doctor that I have a scar now. What did they cut out of my hand?? She had no answer. Come to find out today, Sophie Shirin sent me to collections for an additional $110 . Why did I need to pay them more money? I have no idea! I believe it's essential for healthcare professionals to be accurate in their diagnoses and to prioritize patient well-being. Absolutely horrible. I was referred to Dr.Shirin from my general practitioner across the hall. I made an appointment for The following week, which wasn't too bad. There is a parking structure but their office (like most) don't validate. Street parking is difficult and metered. I was greeted when i entered. The waiting room was clean. I was handed the typical stack of paperwork to fill out and asked for insurance and ID. Pretty routine stuff. My only complaint about the check-in was they do the HIIPA sign in on a tablet and the lady working, said she needed me to sign the form, scrolled down and told me to sign. Well, I don't just sign, And I know most people do, But I thought that to be a bit presumptuous. I tried to scroll up but it was not in the right mode and she saw I was struggling and realized I actually wanted to read it what I was signing and took the tablet back and backed out of the signature page so I could read it. There was an additional insurance page that needed signing as well but my information was incorrect. I pointed it out, before signing it and she stated they make all changes at end of day. Just makes me uncomfortable signing something with incorrect spelling and phone number, But i signed it anyways because she seemed a bit irritated, like I was making her job more difficult. :/ Sigh. My wait time was under 15 minutes which was great! I was walked to the room by an aid, asked a few questions regarding my visit and then Dr. Shirin came in and introduced herself. She was very polite and knowledgeable. She assessed my conditions and answered all my questions. She offered several options and went over each one. Then referred me out to a surgeon for further evaluation. Her office handles an array of procedures and is not just a cosmetic dermatologist office. (Which is important to me as the last one I visited, all they wanted to do was up sell unnecessary procedures when my biggest concern was skin cancer and moles). I'm scheduling an appointment for my husband to see her next. I feel it's really important to take care of your skin. And having a great dermatologist is a key ingredient in doing that. Dr. Shirin is super sweet but I will NEVER go back to see her again. I suffer from adult acne, Dr.Shirin prescribed me Epiduo Forte and while I was using Epiduo, it causes me severe eczema on my face. I went back to Dr. Shirin, she told me to keep using Epiduo and use cetaphil then prescribed me cortisone cream for my face. How did she not know cetaphil can clog pores? How did she not know I suffer from eczema when I have seen her for eczema? How did she not know Epiduo forte's side effects are dry skin and eczema? It says it on their website. I wanted to give them 0 but 1 star is the minimum evaluation rate... The worst reception. Not only she is unfriendly but also she is so mean. We arrived 20 minutes before the appointment and the doctor saw us in an hour with 40 minutes delay with no explanation or apology. The doctor checked my disabled mother on wheelchair for some minutes (5 min.) and left us with so many questions. To fax the prescription to the pharmacist, the reception gave me all different nonsense reasons and gestures not to fax it. This is one of the worst experience I have ever had. SOOOOO AWEFUL. After 7 years of trying to figure out what the nature of my skin rash was, after seeing a Dermatologist on Rodeo Drive who makes that LA 100 doctors regularly and who wasn't able to tell me anything without cutting me (and also mentioned that it might be cancer), I went to Dr. Shirin. It was a great experience. Dr. Shirin diagnosed the it with 100% surety that it was eczema. So much for possible cancer. Said there is absolutely no need for a biopsy. Told me the possibilities of treating it, side effects and was very pleasant. She spend no more than 15 min with me but I didn't feel rushed or pushed out. I felt very much respected. It cost me $150 and I was very happy since I got the diagnosis, next steps, and had a pleasant experience. Dr. Shirin also explained to me the 5 causes of any skin condition and how it's fairly easy to rule out most in most cases. Mine was an easy case. If it weren't, she would have ordered a biopsy but there was no need for it, she said. She is very knowledgeable and very nice. Oh, and the front person about whom everybody is complaining. Her name is Raisa and she is great. You just need to know how to show respect first and then you will be respected in return. Like many reviews I've read here, my experience with the woman who works the front desk was terrible as well. Extremely rude and dismissive, I've tried calling on several occasions to pay off an outstanding balance I owed and would be given attitude because she said she was busy. She would tell me to call back at another time or just leave me on hold for an excessive amount of time. Best thing was I Kept receiving Notices that I owed them and if I didn't pay, it would go to collections. Dr. Shirin wasn't the nicest person either. She was quick and just didn't seem to care to take her time on my concerns . It's ridiculous given you're paying for such an expensive service and somehow you're treated as an inconvenience. I have mixed reviews for Dr. Shirin and her team. The people themselves, I found very friendly and professional, however I was always kept waiting, sometimes for over an hour, even with a scheduled appointment. So, if you go, be sure to leave yourself PLENTY of time. You should also be warned that its going to cost you. I must have received about a half dozen bills from the various labs and associates they work with, spread out over a year after the visits - none of which I was informed about. Yes, I just received another $99 bill today for something done 14 months ago from some lab that I never heard of! The response from Dr. Shirin's office was a somewhat blase, "Yeah, we work with a bunch of labs and sometimes it takes them that long to bill." A heads up on the amount of bills would have been useful - and would have helped in my decision to use them in the first place. Nice, friendly staff. As an esthetician I'm incredibly picky about which dermatologist I trust my own skin to as well as the clients I refer out. In this day of Botox & fillers it's hard to find a true dermatologist who actually practices medicine and knows how to diagnose skin issues. I have been to Dr. Shirin a few times now for both my annual all over body check as well as a couple of suspicious things that needed to be removed. Growing up in sunny Southern California in the 60's and 70's I need to stay on top of my skin and keep an eye out for anything precancerous. I've already had my teenager daughter go to her to have a suspicious looking mole removed on her back and now my husband (an avid golfer who spends a lot of time outdoors) is going next week to have something looked at on his check. I've had only good experiences with her and her staff and the clients I've referred to her have been very happy. read more
