If you're ever in Whiteville, NC, this is a cute little spot to grab lunch. I went a few times in the beginning of July and the staff was friendly but it seemed like they were definitely going through some growing pains with training new people who learning their way around there.Food is prepared when you order it, so it's nice knowing that you don't get grub that's been sitting there for awhile however it comes with having to wait a little longer than normal. I tried a few coffee drinks and it wasn't much to write home about but they have some of the best chicken salad I've ever had. They offer quiche however from what I heard they run out early so it must be pretty good! if you have a sweet tooth, you can definitely settle it here-they have a nice selection of ice cream and pastries. Was traveling to the beach and we stopped in Whiteville for a quick bite. We wanted to go somewhere local as I try and stay away from chains. Sometimes it's hard to navigate. Found Sophie's on yelp and headed to grab some food. It's an interesting place. I think that they have a lot of unused space and it seems weird. But I am not here for the space, I am here to eat. My wife had the Sunny Rain (chicken salad sand which and I had the McMillan Club. The food was good and worth the money. If I lived in town, I would repeat. One of the best Rubens I've ever had. I decided to upgrade to the french fries. They were mediocre at best. They were the very thin pixie fries and only a handful of them. I always love getting lunch at Sophie's when I am in Whiteville! It's a cute little place down town with street parking and adorable cafe feel. I love that they make all their dressings and sauces in house! We ordered a chef salad, scoop of chicken salad and a roast beef sandwich and a gyro.The chef salad was huge and packed with lots of meat and veggies! It was plenty to share and the dressing portion was plenty. The roast beef sandwich was below expectations.. just a little dry and not nearly as good as some of the other specialty sandwiches. The chicken salad had a lot going on lol it was a bit sweeter then I expected but it was still good. The gyro was yummy too but I love their sandwiches. One disappointing thing was they don't have crackers? What's up with that! I asked for cucumber slices for the chicken salad but my friend wasted some for her chef salad. This is a treasure in Whiteville! It's a step back in time with decor but what is really great is the food! All 3 of us tried different sandwiches from their unique and varied menu that isn't standard but a menu with thought and creativity. If you are looking for charm AND good food AND prices that are affordable - check this out! We are visiting NC and definitely worth the trip to this quaint cafe. Sophie's is the place to go if you're looking for lunch. Sophie's has a gourmet sandwiches, salads, quiche, and coffee. Many of the dishes have a French flare. They say everything on the menu is freshly made, and the Croque Madame (French ham and Swiss) and pasta salad I had tasted like it. The staff was all very friendly. When on the road, it's so nice to have options for dining that don't involve primary colors, children's padded playgrounds and paper packaging. I have now found a nice cafe in Whiteville (which is on my main "rabbit track" to the beach down 74.) Sophie's is located in downtown Whiteville and is really easy to find. My chicken salad sandwich was very nice. I asked that it not be served on a croissant and they gladly changed it to multi-grain. The sandwich was very generous and the bread was really great. The decor is fun. It's in an old building and the space looks like it was a former general merchandise store complete with the built in shelving and tin ceiling. They've decorated the restaurant with all kinds of interesting items from old phonographs and TV's to retro serving devices and machines I really couldn't identify. Fun. Only negative was that it took some time for the food to come out of the kitchen and then we had to ask for the check after waiting for our server to come back to our table. I wouldn't even give this place one star. I have given this place two chances and both times I have been extremely disappointed. First time I went I got a sandwich and I asked to put bacon on it and it cost me 3 extra dollars. For one side of bacon? That's ridiculous. Also the sandwich was horribly made and the customer service was terrible. Second time I went I got a salad and the salad was 10 dollars (Grilled chicken salad) there was maybe 5 bites worth of actual salad in there, the outside layer of a red onion chopped in such big pieces it's like they didn't care and the chicken was SO over cooked it broke in half when I would try to pick it up. It didn't pull apart it literally broke like card board. I would not waste my money there ever again hope this is helpful! read more

Got the famous Lenie. Unbelievable. The cranberry mixed with spicy cream cheese tasted so good. The turkey was fairly fresh and shaved perfectly thin. The multigrain bread made the sandwich. A marvelous surprise as we stopped for gas on the way from Topsail Island to Charlotte and needed food to start the day. Sophie's is staged with great memorabilia from the past-ice cream counter, wide booths, and cool kitchen gadgets from the past. My husband enjoyed the Brooklyn, plain bagel with smoked salmon, onion, summer tomatoes and cream cheese. He raved about the coffee - even had two cups! I had the best BLT-spicy BLT, I've ever had. The bread was toasted perfectly and the summer tomatoes & crisp lettuce enhanced the jalapeño infused bacon. Devine! A must! The food is actually made in the kitchen of the high-end Southern Kitchen Restaurant next door--we showed up at 2pm just as they were closing for lunch at Southern Kitchen and the owner offered to take the lentil lamb soup that had attracted our attention over to Sophie's, which is open all day.
