I highly recommend this restaurant for dinner; it's a step above and a very unusual find for a rural area where other options are Waffle House, fast food, or fried this-or-that. To give you an idea, my husband and I ate there this evening and here's what we had (all excellent). Appetizers: tuna tartare with capers, wasabi, sesame seeds, lettuce, and crisps. It was well balanced and delicious. The other appetizer was Cambodian Spring Rolls, which were perfectly browned, and eaten by placing them in a romaine lettuce leaf with crumbled peanuts and dipping it in an amazing but light sauce. The textures and flavors played off of each other wonderfully, elevating it far above any regular spring roll you may be thinking of. For entrees, my husband had the special, Paella (saffron rice, mussels, shrimp, clams, and a whole crab, red bell pepper). Every item was perfectly cooked, neither undercooked nor overcooked and it tasted fantastic. My entree was perfectly cooked pan-seared salmon filet, with perfectly grilled large asparagus and the most amazing take on grits I have ever had (not your mama's breakfast grits). They were delicately flavored with butter, a hint of cheese and I don't know what else but it understated while still having flavors that seemed too complex for grits to have, without being overdone. My husband and I dined here this past Friday (16 August 2024). It's an hour away from where we live in Leland. One couple joined us for the evening and it was a first visit for all of us. Another friend of ours had recommended this place a few months back, as well as my husband's doctor (on a recent visit) who works in Whiteville. The interior provides a casual atmosphere with black table clothes and chairs, street lamps, and potted plants around the room. The tables are nicely set apart. While this place is casual - no need to dress up - the food and service is excellent. Kimberly was our waitress, who was attentive and patient while we went through the menu trying to decide what to order. So many good choices! The menu is a mix of French and Asian foods. Both couples ordered the Cambodian eggrolls and fiery sweet Thai shrimp appetizers. In addition, one friend ordered the onion soup (bowl). While waiting for our appetizers, Chef Sokun came to our table and talked with us for a few minutes. She also wanted to make sure we knew how to eat the Cambodian eggrolls, as well as welcoming us. Yes, my husband and I knew how: take a lettuce leaf, place the roll, mint, peanuts and dipping sauce on top, roll it up and eat. My husband and I have a favorite restaurant in Hawaii that serves the eggrolls in the same manner. The four rolls were filled with minced chicken and other fresh ingredients; the wrappers were thin and crispy. The Thai shrimp was a large portion, about 8-9 shrimp. They were breaded and fried, and topped with a delicious sauce. Both appetizers were excellent. Such wonderful flavors. We could have shared the appetizers but we wanted our own. For my entrée (and one friend), I had the Beef Bourguignon, which is served with rice. I asked to have roasted potatoes in lieu of the rice. The meat was tender, no knife is needed. The vegetables were nicely cooked in the herb and wine sauce. My husband (and our other friend) had the Cambodian beef, served with jasmine rice. Another excellent dish. The food is outstanding (they use locally sourced, fresh ingredients) and reasonable prices for what you get. Fresh baked bread and butter was served at the table. There is a full bar and a nice long list of wines. I had the "not so classic cosmo" that was very tasty and went down easily. With my entrée, I had a glass of the Cotes due Rhone. The 'Frog' is Guillaume, Chef Sokun's husband, owner of the place. He came to the table a couple of times. On the second time after we finished our meal, we invited him to sit with us, so we all talked for a while. He was very personable and we enjoyed talking to him. I wish they were closer to where we live. We'll have to go back and spend an afternoon in town before having dinner there again (or maybe brunch!). There are other dishes that I want to try. I was very excited to try this place based on the reviews and photos. We arrived around 11:40am. We were the first people in the restaurant. Someone came by to grab our drink and food order at 12. By 12:20 we finally got our soft drinks. There was another table sat 30 mins after us and got his food well before we got ours. We ordered a grilled cheese, chicken cordon bleu, and steak and eggs. At 12:40 we were told our food was being plated and that's only when we flagged someone down to ask. Nobody came by to check on us or give refills until our food got to the table at 12:58. I ordered the red wine sauce for my ribeye, however they didn't tell me they didn't have any until after they brought the food out. Throughout the entire time nobody checked on us except when they took the order, we flagged them down, or we asked for the bill. Food was not great. They had a lunch menu online which I was looking forward to, however i believe they don't offer lunch on sundays and it's only brunch. For the quality of everything we got, I almost wish we would have just went through a drive thru. EDIT to add because I cant reply to the business owners comment. I never once mentioned anything about being mad about not getting a military discount. We asked, she said no and i responded "that's okay, no biggie" so I have no idea how that means I was really mad about that or how that upset me the most. That's funny. Really enjoyed this surprise in the middle of Whiteville. Had seen billboards and it just happened we met someone in Wville and the burger joint was closed. This has some interesting atmosphere, the back room is more romantic and there's a patio and a deck. There is 1940s?? music playing as you dine. The food was good. The salmon, seafood and burger were all very good. My steak was ok. I asked for medium rare and got a death grip on medium. It was fine. The hash was really good. The owner was nice and checked on everyone. I would definitely stop here again and recommend the stop if you see the billboard. read more

We visited during the North Carolina Mountains to Coast bike ride and they were cram packed. Even though we did not have reservations they let us sit on the patio. Guillaume and his wife Chef Sokun are the absolute best! When we decided to throw together a small wedding in just a few weeks, we reached out to them for catering. One of the dishes I wanted mimicked something off the menu at one of my favorite Michelin star restaurants in DC. When I tried it the night of my wedding I thought it was better than the Georgetown restaurant. They took the ideas in our head and made them a reality. We loved working with them, and we loved eating their food even more! P.S. - They also own Sophie's, which catered my 'morning of' with the best quiches I've ever had. I originally ate here way back in April 2019 and I remembered it being delicious. Once again, it did not disappoint. The staff, including the owner, were extremely welcoming and friendly. I came with my husband, two small children and parents. My toddler became a little restless so we ordered him the homemade chips to munch on. They were delicious. I ordered the egg rolls. We were told to roll them in the lettuce, add a mint sprig, dip in the oil and then the peanuts. They were tasty and complex in flavor. My husband and I ordered the chimichurri steak. It was so good. My mom ordered a chicken pasta dish and she wouldn't stop talking about how good it was. My dad ordered the grouper special and was scraping the plate clean. 100% worth the drive (from wherever you are!) for an incredible meal and memorable dining experience. We went to The Chef and The Frog for date night recently and the phenomenal food + service deserves endless recognition. For starters, the concept of a fusion type restaurant always intrigues me. Having more creative options to choose from offers a unique appeal. And it certainly tells you the versatility of the chefs palate and skills, which in this case are entirely never level. The staff was incredibly friendly & attentive. The atmosphere was calm and had a warm sense of community, as small towns often provide. Visiting from Wilmington, it was a nice change of pace that certainly enhanced our experience. Ok, now for the food! I'd never tried escargot and this seemed like the opportune time so we ordered this as our appetizer. The butter garlic sauce adds a richness to the mild flavored snails. I believe the bread that was served was house made and a wonderful pairing for soaking up all the goodness of this dish. We also enjoyed the Thai shrimp, which may be one you'd pass by, assuming you've had a similar dish elsewhere. But Chef Sokun wowed us with this one being perfectly crispy, sweet and with a touch heat. Entrees: He chose one of the specials - Steak roulade with spinach and mushrooms + blue cheese sauce, parsnip purée and asparagus. If he hadn't ordered this, I likely would have. And it was absolutely as incredible as it sounds. The presentation was exceptional and the surprise delights of this dish were the the beautiful accompaniment of the blue cheese sauce with a perfectly prepared steak & the parsnip purée. Let me just say, the texture of these parsnips was the creamiest + dreamiest I've ever enjoyed in a vegetable and the complex flavor of this root veggie truly shined through. It was such an unexpected delight, I'd certainly order this again if given the chance. I selected the Chimichurri steak, which was served with sautéed summer squash and roasted potatoes. I ordered it medium rare and as somewhere who admittedly almost never gets a steak, I had a tough time enjoying the center pieces which were thicker and ultimately the 'more rare' parts. Luckily my partner happily devoured these and I thoroughly enjoyed the other sections of the cut. The tomatillo chimichurri was had a mild and slightly sweet flavor to contrast the richness of the steak. The summer squash was prepared in a savory butter sauce that brightened the subtle flavors perfectly and roasted potatoes are just a classic that always works with steak. I don't often consider desserts on a menu as someone who enjoys baking at home, but we'd already heard about the Yuzu tart so of course had to give it a try. What a fun summery citrus treat, with perfectly sweet and tangy flavor! A wonderful pairing of cool creamy filling with a crisp & flaky crust. We actually ended up with two dessert - slightly dangerous after all the delicious food we'd already eaten - and yet I couldn't stop eating the chocolate mouse. Quite simply, it's one of the most delicious chocolate desserts I've ever tasted. Don't sleep on this one, it's not your average mousse! It's truly more of a light and decadent pudding - meets - mousse hybrid, in the best possible way. Whatever magic Chef Sokun worked here created a truly divine texture and beautifully balanced + rich chocolate flavor. My best advice is don't plan to share this one because you'll want it ALL for yourself! It's rare that I leave a restaurant with a clear sense of what I'd want to order again and what else I'd like to try next time but this was that type of meal. This unassuming yet exquisite establishment served us some of the best food I've eaten in quite awhile. What a great experience! We had reservations for 5:00 Saturday evening. We arrived and were seated immediately. The seven of us ordered escargots, fried green tomatoes and calamari to kick off our meal. We ordered a couple of bottles of wine for the table to share. Our server was prompt and very attentive to our needs. Once the appetizers arrived, we ordered our entrees, the ribeye, the pork chop special, shrimp And grits, the haddock special, roasted pork belly, a pasta dish and she crab soup and salad. Everyone was impressed by the quality and presentation of their food. If we had more time we would have stayed for desert. I guess we'll just have to go back soon! Great job! We had dinner here on a rainy Saturday evening. Everything was delicious. My husband had the She crab soup and Chicken pasta. I had the Garden salad with house made Blue cheese dressing and Shrimp and grits. We shared the dessert of the day Vanilla bundt cake with homemade blueberry sauce, homemade vanilla bean ice cream. Took a nice drive out to Whiteville, NC to The Chef & the Frog restaurant. Lovely place inside with beautiful photos from around the world! The owner and his wife, who is also the chef were there to greet us and showed us to our table. Warm small loaves of bread with chilled crocks of butter came with our Appys of French onion soup and fish chowder. Both were fabulous! Entrees were the shrimp and grits for me while my husband had the seafood pasta dish. Both dishes were wonderful and we had to take a nice portion home for later. It was picking up as we were leaving; I do suggest a reservation and know you won't be disappointed with the atmosphere, food and wine selection! To be honest in a small town I wasn't expecting much. However the experience was 5 stars. The wait staff couldn't be better she took our orders and made sure we had everything. She was on top of everything. Checking on us clearing empty plates, refilling bread and water. The food? What a hidden nugget to have the best food I've ever had. The chefs technique with seasoning and heat made with the best ingredients was a dance on my palate. The finest meat was precise to our request and the pastas were hand made. We found out the chef is celebrated world class Michelin Star Chef Sokun! The owner, Guillaume Slama came out personally to meet us he too was gracious and introduced himself and his wife The Chef! My wife and I were visiting family in North Carolina near Christmas and we were looking for someplace special to eat. I was really looking for a Wagyu steak and was expecting us to have to drive a couple of hours to a big city, but to my surprise we found this gem in the little town of Whiteville. The Chef and The Frog is a fusion of French and Asian but it's really just fine dining done right in a casual atmosphere. We sampled the crab cakes and they were delicious. Large chunks of crab throughout the cake served with a spicy salsa. It was simply mouth watering. I enjoyed the escargot. I was expecting more butter and garlic but it didn't need it at all so my expanding waistline thanks them. The A3 Wagyu steak was very tender and delicious. It paired very well with the red wine reduction sauce. For dessert we shared a bananas foster and I had an Irish coffee. It was the perfect finish for the evening. So if you're in or around Whiteville looking for something high end but not high brow then this is the place for you. Highly recommend.
