This consultant told me to stop breastfeeding because my baby's tongue "might get sore." After following her plan for a month, my baby lost the ability to nurse. It went against current standard practices. I filed formal complaint against her with the IBCLE board. I saw Leah Whitley five days after my baby's tongue tie release. After a full day of completely successful breastfeeding, my baby was calm, satisfied, and showing no hunger cues. I was even considering cancelling our follow up appointment because everything was finally going well. At that visit, Leah told me it was "dangerous" to keep breastfeeding because my baby's tongue muscles might "get sore." She instructed me to stop breastfeeding and begin triple feeding instead. My husband was present at every appointment, and we both heard these instructions. We followed her plan for a month across three weekly appointments. During that time my baby developed nipple preference, stopped nursing, and our breastfeeding relationship collapsed. We have since spent months in oral motor therapy trying to repair the damage. Leah has worked with me for 2 of my children feeding journeys; in 2021 and in 2025. In 2021 she identified my daughter's extreme ties and helped connect me with professionals that would help her. I took her advice with caution and also saw an ENT. The ENT told me it wasn't real.... I finally tried the tie revision anyway because she dropped fro 97% to the 32% and 5 minutes after the ties were fixed she ate a full bottle with no issues. Leah was dead on. In 2025 I listened much more quickly. Leah has help me maintain my milk supply this time even through ties. I have had significant medical issues that she has help me identify and while I am taking care of them (which affected much more then my milk supply but also really hurt my supply), She has help me protect and increase my milk supply so that I could feed my son. Leah has been such a huge help to us through our breastfeeding journey. Our initial meeting with Leah, she came to our home and spent time working on baby's latch, asked us if we need help with anything else and provided detailed information on everything we had questions about. We were nervous to let anyone into our home with a newborn but Leah made us feel overly comfortable by practicing extreme cleanliness, constantly sanitizing, wiping down and washing hands! I still call and text Leah with any questions I have. Also booked a phone meeting that was very informative and answered all of my questions/concerns. Leah came highly recommended but fell short. She was late for our virtual call with no heads up. I had to reach out to find out she was running late. Then proceeded to tell me everything I did wrong as a new mom as opposed to finding solutions. Her intern seemed more sympathetic to my situation then she was. Also felt like I had to ask all the questions instead of her giving me advice as a new mom. We only spoke for 30mins, she took my money and ran. Sent some follow up up cut and pasted email, not very professional. I'm sure it's a mix of new mom sleep deprivation and hormones but she left me in tears. She never followed up to see how I was doing or cared I guess. I ended up going to motherhood center and they were way more helpful! Renee Bowling was absolutely amazing and caring. As I first time mom, I did a lot of research about breastfeeding prior to giving birth to my daughter. I knew it was going to be a tough journey, but I didn't realize just how tough it would be. Breastfeeding seemed to be going fine while I was in the hospital. My little girl latched immediately and was nursing around the clock. However, when we got home I began to experience worsening pain with each nursing session. The pain became so excruciating that I started dreading every nursing session and seriously thought about quitting. Thankfully, a friend of a friend recommend Leah at SOS lactation. I sent an email and received a response the same day. She was able to travel to our home outside the Loop the very next day. She was thorough with her assessment and took her time observing us. She also took into consideration my goals and wishes for my breastfeeding experience. During the initial visit, she noted that my daughter had lost a little more weight than what's usual. She not only taught us how to achieve a painless latch and how to use my electric and silicone breast pumps, but she also came up with a plan for supplementation using my own expressed milk in order to help get baby's weight up. In addition to the hands on instruction, she emailed a detailed care plan to me, as well. By our follow-up visit a week later, my daughter had gained a good amount of weight and was doing so much better. Ah, breastfeeding. The most natural thing in the world, right? How is it that something so ancient and natural can feel so excruciating? It's like I had given birth to a milk-sucking vampire. You would think as a second time mom I'd have an easier time nursing, but no. It was rough. Again. Thankfully, Leah was available to help me through the worst of it. She watched me nurse first and then walked me through some pointers. She is very hands-on, showing you what to do instead of just explaining it. She was able to help me get a nearly pain-free latch (nearly only because I had already created damage from a shallow latch over the past 5 days) and then watched while I did it on my own.
