    Cajun Turkey Wings
    Richard R.

Came for the turkey wings, but fell in love with the oxtails. We arrived on the grand opening weekend of their new brick and mortar location to lots of activity and fanfare. There were balloons, music, dancing, a DJ, and tents! Two different flavors of turkey wings were prepared, regular in gravy and Cajun style (4 stars). Unfortunately they ran out of the regular before we reached the ordering counter, but the Cajun were still very good! To my surprise, the oxtails (5 stars) were some of the best I've ever eaten. Large, tender and soul forking good! We also ordered chicken wings (3.5 stars) with their famous mambo sauce and fried fish (3 stars). Both were okay, but the star of the show for me were the oxtails. Hope to visit again next time we are passing through Charlotte. Overall I would give them 3.75 rounded up because of friendly customer service and very respectable large crowd management.

I couldn't wait to check this place out! The line was long but it moved fast. Although the line moved fast it took a while to get your food. I didn't mind because the food was hot and fresh. I had their fried fish, yams and fries. Everything was cooked perfectly!

I asked someone about recommendations of good soul food and SOUL FORKING GOOD was suggested. When I pulled up, the line was out of the door. It was around 4:20ish pm and they close at 6pm on Sunday. The line moved really quickly. There was a DJ outside playing some good music. I ordered the (large) Whole Chicken Wing plate with rice and gravy with collard greens. Six wings come on this plate along with Munbo Sauce and a roll. The cost was $23 plus tax. Food was DELICIOUS!!!! I will definitely be back!

Leftover Mac N Cheese from a day or so ago that was reheated

This was one of the worst food experiences I've had in a long time. What's advertised on their social media pages is flat-out misleading and does not reflect what you actually receive. The food online looks fresh, rich, and made with care. What I got tasted old, poorly handled, and reheated. The mac and cheese was clearly not fresh. It had that stiff, dried-out texture that only comes from sitting and being reheated, and it honestly seemed like they tried to cover it up by throwing fresh cheese on top. That didn't fix anything and it just made it more obvious. The flavor was bland, the texture was rubbery, and it tasted like leftovers being passed off as a fresh dish. The fried chicken was dry, tough, and completely lacking seasoning. It tasted like it had been cooked long before and reheated without any care. No crispness, no juiciness, no flavor and just disappointing. And the biggest issue of all: the candied yams were not candied yams. What I received was mashed potatoes. Not a different style of yams. Not a mix-up in texture. Literal mashed potatoes. That goes beyond a simple mistake and into either extreme carelessness or outright dishonesty. The restaurant was extremely packed which would explained why they can't keep up with the demands of making food fresh. The 2 sides were pipping hot like someone microwaved them and placed them in a tray. Also; there is nowhere to sit down in the restaurant. The serving lines were not cleaned, neat and presentable. Food service is also about cleanliness. I was incredibly disappointed for driving over an hour to support this black owned business. As a food service professional for over 20 years myself this experience was beyond the pale. I will not return and recommend to family and friends. I wish them all the best and hope things will improve.

Great spot for lunch, brunch, dinner! We love this place

I could eat here every day. I recently had the Season fish and macaroni and cheese. The collard greens were an add-on and they were so good. The plate was full of flavor and all took me by surprise. No wonder if this place is so viral and has lines around the block. This place is a must try.

Located in a strip mall type of setting this is a food truck turned brick and mortar. The wait was long. About 45 minutes from the time we walked in until to we got our order. Small space. I would not consider it dine it but there were 3 small tables. We ordered the whiting dinner and the chicken wing/whiting dinner. Two pieces of cake and a lemonade. Our total was $77!! The fish was not hot by the time we got 5 minutes down the road to our hotel. The yams were too thick or something. The collard greens were not well seasoned. The cake was just okay. For that amount of money I was expecting to be blown away and I was not.

Went there with a friend on their opening week...Pork Chop and side was delicious and the place was packed ..Met the owner and another member of her family...Great staff and definitely deserve our support...Will try and make a return trip soon...Friends I went with had the Catfish and were quite pleased...I also heard the oxtails are off the chain..

Ok yall this place is super good. When I pulled up I almost turned around because the line was out the door. We waited and the line moved pretty quickly. I ordered a catfish sandwich and a large wing dinner with collards and Mac. It's was wonderful the Mac was about a 7 everything else was a 10. O and I had hush puppies on the side too and they were a 10. Now the cons: Due to the door being opened so much it was a lot of flies in there. Hopefully they are working on a resolution for that. Lastly there is a machine in there that you can place your order on if you are paying with a card which is great in theory. The problem is it's in a bad place and you still are waiting in the regular line for a while to get to the machine. If that machine could be places somewhere else it would be great. Overall experience is 9/10 and I will def be back.

I visited SoulForkingForkingGood in Durham today after following them on social media for a while. I really wanted to love this place, but honestly, my experience was just okay. I spent around $70 for everything. I ordered the fish and shrimp dinner with two sides. The shrimp were fine, but the fish was very disappointing. It was a thin, dry piece that didn't taste fresh and looked nothing like what they show in their TikTok videos. I'm not even sure it was whiting because whiting is usually thick and meaty, and this wasn't. The cabbage had no flavor at all, but the yams were really good. I also ordered a small side of chicken wings, three for about $7.25, and those were delicious. The wings were seasoned perfectly and cooked just right. My husband got the jerk turkey wings with cabbage and yams. He said the turkey wings tasted great but weren't very hot, more like warm. The rice and gravy were very good, but again, the cabbage was bland. The restaurant itself was packed, and there are only a couple of tables inside, so we ended up eating in the car. The cashier was really nice and helpful, especially since it was our first time there. Overall, the service was friendly and the wings were the best part, but the fish and cabbage really let us down. I drove about 45 minutes to get there, expecting something amazing, and it just didn't live up to the hype. I'd give it 3 stars. I don't hate it, but if I ever go back, I'll definitely order something different.

I went here for the grand opening weekend with some family. It was very busy and it's very small inside so we had to wait outside until the line grew smaller. They did have tables and chairs and a DJ and that was super fun. For the service you order through the line and then they call your number when your food is ready. I ordered the chicken wing plate with 2 sides for about 18 dollars. They do have a smaller meal for lunch. The chicken was good, not the best fried chicken I've ever had. The flavoring was on point but it could have been a little more cripsy. The fries were good and hot and the Mac and cheese was really good. I ordered the lemonade which was nice and sweet as well. They have the drinks sold in bottles already bottled up for you. It did take a while for the food to come, but it was the grand opening so I assume that's why. Otherwise the service was friendly. This was my first experience with the restaurant but it was good. The menu does seem a little smaller than others in the area.

Was excited to try a new place but beware, their hours vary by day. I arrived where their website…read moresaid they were open till 3:59am only to be told they closed at 8:30pm on a Saturday... I was also told the menu changes daily... whenever I'm on this side of town maybe I'll give them a try but I won't go out of my way to visit a place that says download Instagram to see if they're open/what they have for the day. You're a restaurant with a website wasting a domain ... at least ATTEMPT to keep that accurate! Also, to clarify: If you check sanitation scores like I do - they used to be listed as KALE'S KITCHEN but are now listed as KALES AT JOE'S DINER. They do have a good grade though!! Just something to be aware of if you check places frequently like I do.

I traveled through Durham for business and decided to stop at Kale's Kitchen. I've been following…read morethem for a few years on TikTok, watching their growth and all the amazing-looking food they post. So without a doubt, since I was in the area, we decided to stop by and pick something up. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the staff and looked over the menu. We ordered three meals, which totaled roughly $100: fried fish with double mac & cheese (which cost extra), fried shrimp with cabbage and mac & cheese, and chicken wings with mac & cheese and baked beans. From what I'd seen on Instagram and TikTok, I knew the plates were usually packed with food, so I wasn't worried about the $30 price point. I even told my family we'd probably be able to eat off these plates for two days. When we got to the car, I was hyping up the food and told my family, "Let's take a look." But when I opened the boxes, I was highly disappointed. The fish was clearly cooked in old grease--it was overcooked and very dry. The shrimp weren't crunchy and were also overcooked, likely in the same old grease. The portions were smaller than what we expected based on what we'd seen online. Paying $100 for burnt food was very disappointing. I understand that restaurants can have an off day, but please don't serve burnt food with a smile. I would've respected being offered a replacement or at least told before it was handed to me. I genuinely go out of my way to support Black-owned businesses, especially when I travel. I love seeing us win, grow, and represent excellence in food and service. That's one of the main reasons I was so excited to visit Kale's Kitchen after following their journey for so long. I really wanted to have a great experience and continue cheering them on. Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to the expectations or the standard I've seen them showcase online, and that was truly disappointing. I still believe in what they're doing and hope this was just an off day. I'd love to see them continue to grow and improve, because the potential and passion are definitely there.

I'm from Charlotte and my friend was in the southeast visiting so we met up in Durham. ChatGPT…read moresuggested Boricua Soul as a part of our girls day. First stop. We never made it anywhere else lol! I'm so excited to write this review!! We chose it because when I reviewed the Yelp reviews they were stellar. But mostly I was super intrigued by the sweet potato cheesecake empanada and y'all it was everything I hoped it would be. It's small, you can maybe get 4 or 5 bites. The filling is sweet but not overpowering, good balance. The crust, crunchy and delicious. Came with a side of whipped cream. Drizzled in caramel sauce. I had the restraint to save it for last. We opted to split the shrimp sandwich and house made chips because we weren't too hungry and wanted to save room for the empanadas. Perfect plan. The sandwich can be ordered with a garlic, jerk or buffalo sauce. We were given a sample of the jerk to determine spicyness. Super spicy (which I loved) but my friend doesn't so we went with buffalo which wasn't spicy at all. The shrimp were a nice size, coated and seasoned well. The restaurant itself is small with about five tables but there is an abundance of outdoor seating shared with other businesses. We knew we planned to relax and catch up so we opted to eat outside. Despite the 90 degree weather, the entire area was shaded with a little wind so perfect. We got a number and our food and drinks were served to us. (Peach passion froze----yum!) Now. Boricua Soul is a great example of why I love seeking out and patroning local restaurants. The founders, Serena and Tori Fredericks, were both present, Serena managing the front, Tori managing the kitchen and both in and out of the restaurant serving people outside as well as inside. They were all over! Very welcoming. We were there for four hours and Serena's smile never left her face. She personally checked on us throughout. It felt like hanging out at your family's for the day. When we came in just a few people there, no line. Serena was at the register. I told her I came from Charlotte and she graciously gave us samples of the mac and cheese and collard greens as she described the menu. Both by the way, amazing! I don't think I've ever been able to find delicious perfectly seasoned greens with no meat. Before we knew it the line was to the door. By then I had the chance to experience her love for what she does and her heart for the community. Clean restaurant, beautiful and personable decor. Clean gender neutral private bathrooms. I took pics of the article on the wall about them, well worth the read. You too will drive miles to experience this Caribbean and Southern inspired restaurant! Im coming back and bringing people. There's so much more for me to try.

I love how they had a lot of drink options, including fountain drinks, and special lemonades. We got here on the late side for lunch, and found there to be several different options for ordering. You could wait in line and order with a cashier, you could do a self service kiosk, or you could order from a QR code at a table. We ended up grabbing a table and opting to do it with a QR code. Everything was very clear, and I like that they showed what was popular immediately. I opted for a Boricua Soul Bowl, which I'd sampled during a food tour a few years back- then I tried it with chicken, so today I opted for shrimp. I feel like you really should go with pork since that's the default, and a mainstay of Puerto Rican cuisine and soul food, but alas I have an aversion to pork so I can't. I was also intrigued by the jackfruit option- there's something for everyone! My husband went for a platter with pork, which he said was delicious and rich. The Mac and cheese was amazing, and the collards were to DIE FOR! They have four house made sauces, which were a very fun way to add different flavors (I doused mine in Guava!). Since I've now been, I understand that there are many different methods of ordering, but I'm not sure I understand if there's a benefit or staff preference to one over another. I think one thing I might do in the future is order online (if you're using Toast Tab anyway, might as well order in advance) and then sit outside after I arrive. It took about 30 minutes to get our food, which probably means everything is made to order and fresh (as opposed to sitting around) so that's great, but I was STARVING by the time we got our food. Will definitely be back!

There is plenty of parking on the backside of the building, paid parking out front, and be careful not to park in the apartment spaces on the side...they sounded pretty serious about towing. I had made a reservation but it was probably unnecessary as it was pretty empty when we arrived (it was about 5pm on a Saturday.) The waitress brought a bottle of water to the table and took our drink order. And I know that this place is literally call it's a Southern thing but can I mention how much I dislike drinking out of mason jars? I ordered the chicken n biscuits, my husband got the country hamburger steak plate, my BiL got wings, and my SiL got the crabcakes. We also orders charred jalapeno & sweet corn hushpuppies and frickles as an appetizer. I was VERY excited about my food. Y'all...the only thing that impressed me were the Frickles. Everything else was distinctly underwhelming. I also ordered Blackberry Betta Have My Money which was not that great. My SiL ordered a espresso martini that they said didn't come from a mix but she said it tasted like it was. The bathrooms were very clean. The decor and the vibe were great. Cute even. I really enjoyed that part of it. After dropping off our food, we never saw our waitress again unless we flagged her down for drink refills. It was especially frustrating since there was automatic gratuity added. And since the place wasn't that busy, it felt like she didn't feel the need to earn her automatic tip. Overall I was disappointed in my birthday dinner. I won't be coming back here.
