I remember one night 4 years ago I was enjoying a lovely evening out at Spybar when a friend of mine gave me one of those huge ass Blue Tesla Ecstasy pills that were going around back then. Like a dumbass I ate the whole thing. Sure enough 30 minutes later it hit me like a ton of bricks and I knew I'd need to puke any minute. Thankfully, I had the presence of mind to go next door to sound-bar, pay their shitty cover, proceed straight to the round bar, go in that little side bathroom and hurl my guts out in the toilet. Sound-Bar is my favorite go to place for a random night of dancing. I've been to Sound-Bar way too many times on random occasions. I have always had a blast when visiting Sound-Bar because it's truly about who you go out with because I've seen people just stand around looking bored while my friends and I are dancing our bottoms off. I love that they divide the floors up by what type of music they play. I love the Hip Hop, R&B, and mainstream music floor that's in the basement. I only spend my time their but I did go to the top floor one night and still had a blast. I randomly was searching through Yelp a month or so before my birthday to find a potential place to celebrate. I saw that someone mentioned that Sound-Bar offered a wrist band deal for various celebrations. I decided to select Sound-Bar for my birthday celebration because they had the best bang for your buck. For $35 per person you get to skip the line, don't have to pay cover, and you get our choice of 10 drinks from the top or bottom shelf which excludes shots and red bull. The only thing to keep in mind is that they ask that they come with at least 10 people before 11 pm and the rest of your group can come whenever. It was the best deal that I had seen. My group and I got there before 11 pm so we could take advantage of the deal. We did encounter one bartender that was so rude to use and refusing to give us the top shelf drinks or drinks at all until we tipped her. She gave us the weakest drinks that we'd had ever tasted when she did decide to give us drinks. We all decided to stop going to her because it was taking away from the fun of the night and went to the other side of the bar. That's when I met Jennifer who I like to call F***ing Jennifer because she was amazing! She was great and made sure I didn't leave with just a slight buzz. I ended up tipping her largely at the end of the night because she was great and I directed everyone in my group to go to her. I would recommend if you do take advantage of the wrist band special, remind your group to tip because the $35 covers all the fun perks but the bartenders still need to get paid. I don't see the point of table service if you take advantage of this deal. They also have a random sitting area downstairs near the VIP area if you must sit down. read more

I was conflicted on what to rate Sound-Bar, as I've had some really fun times here. I'll settle on a 3/5, as I feel like it's gone downhill in recent years. Sound-Bar is still one of my favorite, go to spots for dancing in Chicago. I like how there is hip-hop downstairs and house music upstairs. The music is really fun! If you go downstairs, beware of the creepy guys that linger on the edges of the dance floor. Drinks are overpriced, but what's new? When you're in downtown Chicago, you expect to pay those kind of prices. The club is pretty spacious - I like that whenever I want to get away from the crowd, I can. The outside area is nice too for when you need to get a breath of fresh air. The thing I'm not impressed with is the employees. They're strict with dress code, IDs, and cover depending on who you are. I've come and been before the cutoff or had a password that was good until later and the girls at the front are nasty about it and make you pay anyways. Have better service and more people will come to drink and party here! read more

I'm no noobie when it comes to Sound-Bar since I've been here on multiple occasions with friends. Each time, I either get dragged along or decide to give it another chance. However, it doesn't fail me that it turns out to be mediocre every time. During my most recent visit, the entire floor (including the basement) was sticky. How is that even possible?? That people have managed to spill drinks on every nook and cranny of that place. My poor shoes. (insert crying emoji) The music is hit-or-miss every single time. There will be moments where a great jam is coming on that causes your body to groove along, but then there will be other moments where your momentum is interrupted by some prolonged no-beat part of the song. It's like at a baseball game where they'll play catchy music and abruptly stop while you're just getting into it. The drinks are strong, but they are pricey since this is River North. They do the job but nothing to write home about. I can't tell if it's because I'm an old soul in a young body, but I'll stick with the nice cocktail lounges. Given the number of bars and clubs in Chicago, I would recommend going elsewhere. read more

Been twice now and both times were a lot of fun. What makes them great is the variety of experiences you can have under one roof. There are two levels and four rooms if my math skills are correct. The largest space has strobe lights and smoke with a dj spinning dance beats, with a large dance floor. To the side up top is also a smaller red room with tear drop decor above a round bar. There are a few couches amd tables in this area. Downstairs has more of a loungey seating area plus a smaller dance area. The entire downstairs has more hip hop style while upstairs is electronic/edm. My one piece of advice: come early. Later on there is a line and cover. However, it is free entry and three free drink tickets before 11.30 if you use the promoter who advertises in the tips section here on yelp. The drink tickets are only for rail and a few beers, but it is still an amazing deal. We never would have come without the deal, but I am so glad she convinced us to come because we ended up staying the whole night amd never getting bored. I just went here last night for a friend's birthday. Other than a man randomly groping my breast when I wasn't looking, it was an alright experience. I spent most of my time downstairs. The security is very watchful and I'm pretty sure they thought I was drunk because they saw me slap a guy on his arm. If you get there before 11:30PM and use the password, you can get 4 free drinks. However, you have to use up all the drink tickets before 11:30PM. I didn't know that. But $33 for 3 crown and cokes isn't too bad. This definitely isn't my first choice whenever I go out, but it's an alright place. I prefer to go to Boystown or Wicker Park. read more

Came here on a random night which turned out to be SAMF after-party. The line wrapped around the block but we somehow managed to buy someone else's no-show tix. Didn't look like the bouncers really enforced the whole club dress code thing so the vibe was kinda weird with lots of folks wore whatever. It was really packed too. They seriously need to do something to fix their bathrooms. Drinks were also kinda pricier than expected for a place like this. This was the only nightclub I've been to in Chicago, so I don't know how they stack up against other night clubs in the area. After giving this establishment several chances to impress, they failed each time. The latest was this past weekend. After RSVP'g for free cover before 11:30 and arriving before then, the door girl who takes the cover money tells me the website info is incorrect; They use an "ipad and the cutoff is 11." I simply left and spent my money elsewhere. There are simply too many other establishments who manage their business better. Each time i have visited, i have heard one excuse after another at some point of my visit. Anyways, make sure to put yourself on the guest list on the website if you plan to come, that will save you $20 in cover, and I think their guest list stays open until 11:30 PM. Totally mixed crowd here, I was kinda surprised by that. They've got a couple levels here with the basement sporting the more popular dance floor. Plenty of Asian girls here, and for a second I thought I was in LA again. BE WARNED. There's a complex array of glass divider/walls in the basement that is just utterly confusing after you're drunk. You see people on the other side, but you don't know how to get to them. You feel like you're in a glass maze. Anyways, I learned my lesson after walking into the glass a few times. I go to a giant dance club like this about once a year - and only if there is a world music type event there. On any given night, I'm really not a "dance club" sort of person. Went to see DJ Aqueel (super sexy Indian man!) and it was FANTASTIC! Fantastic because of the music and the DJ . . . the club itself seemed too giant. I like the different lounges, that was pretty swank. Actually, if DJ Aqueel hadn't exploded onto the scene just in time, my friends and I were contemplating bailing on the whole operation 'cos we just were not feeling the love at Sound-bar. My friend and I visited Sound-bar for the first time this weekend because we'd heard we could get in free if we made online reservations beforehand. This ended up being true although not because we made online reservations. They didn't check that we made reservations at all. They also told us we couldn't get in without a $250 bottle reservation, and then they let us in 5 minutes later. We arrived around 11pm and as we stood in the long line, contemplated leaving because they supposedly stop letting people in for free at 11:30pm. Fellow people waiting in the line behind us got impatient and left to go to Vision bar. I'd heard of Vision bar but I thought Sound and Vision were the one and same. We ended up getting in at 11:31 free because a bachelor party told us to pretend we were with them so that we could get in VIP and free :) Had a fun night of dancing and met new friends, although got orange alcohol spilled on my shirt and there were REALLY odd sketchy things happening. I don't think there's anyway for me to give this review without sounding like a hoity-toity East Coast elitist snob, but I was pretty let down by this venue. Since most of my experience at such nightclub venus has been in NYC, I can only compare this place to those. I came here for a show (The Crystal Method) with my bf and a friend when we were in town last month. I figured, hey, might as well indulge in some of my late 90s electronica desires, and since I managed to get in for free via the Jukely app, all the better. My friend and the bf both had to pay for their respective tickets, which were pretty cheap, so that wasn't too bad, either. Had they not done so beforehand, though, they would've had to pay a cover charge ($20) which I thought was pretty high for a venue of this calibur. I hate saying this, but this is Chicago, not LA or NYC. Like most other nightclubs, the bouncers will let in and keep out those that they so choose, but it seemed pretty haphazard and inconsistent as they were trying to keep a more clubby vibe, yet there were plenty of people who were just dressed super casually. Acoustics of the venue were fine, but the layout of the place didn't seem all that conducive for attending a concert at. There is a downstairs area, but we didn't bother checking it out. Bar service is also super slow, which just led to a very meh experience in my books. Seems like there's a lot of other venues in the area that you can check out that may or may not justify their cover charges, if that's what you like to do, though. read more

I've had terrible experiences my two times at this bar. Most of the time they let in icky men, and thats a norm. But this time my two friends who are POC went to the bathroom together and security came knocking down the door and kicked them out claiming they were "throwing up" when both were sober and 21+. Why is it that every time I go to this place, I have a worse time than the previous visit? That's pretty amazing. The only reason I continue to go is that I've never paid cover, and it's not like I'm anyone important. Just make friends with some Asians and you can get in, no problem. The problem isn't with the bartenders, who are pretty cool, nor is it with the pricing, since cover's easy to bypass and if you come with a party, you can get fairly buzzed for free. It's not the music which is a fair mix of current hip-hop and pop, nor is it the washrooms, which (for guys) don't have lines. Ok, sounds good, right? The problem is lies in everything and everyone else. First off, the bouncers at the entrance range from non-friendly to complete dickbags. One time they actually made me walk back and forth to prove I wasn't too wasted to go in. If it's a Friday, the place is crowded with Asians to the point where it's impossible to walk without stepping on someone. On Saturday, it's so empty that you wonder if everyone else knows something you don't. I got tricked into going there last weekend when I experienced how nasty the floors are. I was wearing slip-on dress shoes, and I noticed that as I walked, my shoes weren't moving with my feet. My shoes were sticking to the drink-laden carpet, and I had to use a little effort with each step to peel them off the floor. This place has a formula for a good night. Hype music, people dressed nice and a no bs tension from da business. All you need is to bring the positive attitude. Setting: Huge. Lots of stairs, lots of giant mirrors, and lots of fake smoke. Navigating this big/psychedelic/foggy place felt like a journey into a bar in heaven. Sound: Loud. Humongous club with a Mario theme and two floors and lots of areas for bottle service. The music differs between the floors, so you get lots of variety throughout the night. I didn't like the strobe lights because they were so abundant; at any given point, one of them is surely stinging you in the eye. The music definitely gets really loud. At around 1:30am, they turned up the bass way high. I thought my head was going to explode. But if the music is your kinda thing, you'll have a great time. Drinks weren't too bad here. What an awesome club to dance the night away. I'm not sure why so many people give this place a bad review. Yes drinks are pricey. But remember your in downtown Chicago at a night club. I paid $12 for a BlueMF and it was great! You get your money's worth for alcohol. DJ downstairs is Hip-Hop and some EDM. Great for those who don't like the upstairs, because the upstairs is all EDM. DO NOT go to this horrible bar. I have tried to get in contact with this bar for months to dispute a charge. I was there for a concert months ago when they was an unfortunate event resulting in a shooting outside. My group had just ordered bottle service and they immediately make you sign the receipt and they give you the bottle. About 20 minutes later everyone had to exit the building. Couldn't take the bottles, disputed the charge through the credit card company who said since I signed the receipt I'm responsible, and have called emailed etc sound bar multiple times and no one calls me back.
