This isn't westernized "McDonalds" qigong, this is the genuine practice, the teachings passed down by Chinese masters of the art. As a beginner, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Vadim made me feel immediately welcome, patiently reviewing foundational practices like Ba Duan Jin. I'm thrilled he emphasizes standing practices (e.g. Zhan zhuang), deceptively powerful exercises often overlooked by lesser teachers. He's great at demonstrating proper form, explaining WHY we're learning particular practices, and patiently correctly mistakes in our form. After my last class (a real workout for body and mind!) we got tea and talked about life. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an accomplished and generous teacher. This has been one of the most enjoyable activities I have done and it is because of Chris, the instructor. He is so fluid and graceful and still demonstrates how this can be a martial art. He breaks down the movements into simple steps so what looks to be confusing because it appears so complex becomes easy to repeat. He points out nuances in position and movements and explains why they are important so that I don't feel that I am doing pointless movements. He is patient and supportive so that no one in the group feels uncomfortable. I know that I often look awkward but Chris always helps. I plan to continue doing this with Chris indefinitely.

From my first classes (when I was an absolute beginner) to now (when I am learning broad sword and other advanced forms that make my head spin), I have always felt just enough of a challenge/stretch to get me out of my comfort zone, while still feeling nurtured and grounded. I now go to classes three mornings per week, and I can't say enough about what that practice has done for my physical and emotional well-being. Something I really appreciate is that Viola models how to keep learning and growing. As masterful as she is - and I have never seen another martial artist of her caliber - she still travels as far as Chen Village in China to study with Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei so she can refine her practice and bring new ideas back to the school.
