Absolute best dental experience I have ever had. I needed to have a molar pulled for a bone graft and a future implant. From my very first consult with Dr. Whelan he put me at ease and took the time I needed to fully understand my options. My regular dentist referred me to OM3 which I went there and felt very uncomfortable. I asked a customer of mine that is a retired dentist who he would refer me to and that's how I met Dr. Whelan. The procedure was painless from the initial numbing until I left and still 10 hours later I am pain free. His expertise and calming manner really helped keep me relaxed. He also explained what he was doing along the way, which is so helpful because often times when you're sitting in the dentist chair you're wondering "what are they doing", or "how much time do I have left?" Very sketchy business with unethical business practice. When we called to inquire about having our daughter go here for her wisdom teeth extraction - during the initial phone conversation we disclosed our dental insurance and nowhere in that conversation did they mention they did not accept Premera Blue Cross - but they were more than happy to still have us come in. After they sent us the estimate, we asked why the costs were so high and that is when they disclosed that they were out of network. Now they want us to pay the consultation fee since we opted to not use an out of network provider. We tried to work with them, but they don't care. We will be filing a complaint with the better business bureau. read more

I had to have surgery to have a wart removed from the upper part of my mouth. The consultation went very smoothly. I was a bit worried and apprehensive about having any surgery. On the day of surgery, I went in, sat down in the dentist chair and then woke up. It was all done! No pain or discomfort whatsoever. Within a week all the stitches had gone and my life was back to normal. Dr. Whelan and his staff are consummate professionals. They prescheduled a 6month follow-up cleaning, failed to inform us that it would not be covered by our insurance. Paid that bill out of pocket. We then had a filling fall out, they charged us $$$ just to look at the tooth. Was not made aware that there was going to be a charge just to look at it. read more

Too bad I can't give anything less than 1 star as my experience here doesn't deserve a star. I needed to get 3 wisdom teeth removed here. And my instincts told me I shouldn't trust the dr as he was giving off this creepy vibe. It appeared that he only hired youngish pretty ladies - which to me is a red flag. But alas, I needed to get my teeth removed as it was causing discomfort and didn't want to go find another place since it would take more time. While chatting with him I couldn't help but think of little shop of horrors. Of the doctor getting high off nitrous while trying to grope his assistants. But let me keep to the facts. Before going under anesthetics, the dr had to administer it via IV. He didn't have finesse as I could feel him stabbing my arm a few times before he got it right. Surgery went fine and I went through recuperation. After about 2 weeks I was eating something and heard a crunch sound which radiated intense pain in my jaw. Called the dr and found out he took a week long vacation so I couldn't contact him. wth! Went to see my primary doctor and he gave me more pain medication but he didn't give me enough since I had to go back to him while the surgeon was still on vacation. My primary doctor prescribed me more meds but also had me do an MRI. The results came back that showed I had a hairline fracture on a nerve which is the cause of so much pain. Finally saw the surgeon and he put me under and fixed the issue. And the lesson of the day is: trust your instincts. read more

husband went in over a year ago but the experience is still with me so I thought I would share. Right away receptionist, brunette did not remember her name, did not greet us in a professional manner "last name?", was our greeting. As my husband was telling her the info she seemed uninterested. She asked who would be there to pick him up, I said I was and she asked, "and you are?" to which I replied I'm his wife and she looked amused. Heard her recite some info like someone was twisting her arm and heard the same exact thing from our greeting to the info verbatim over the next 45 min. I was surprised at how fast the procedure was considering 4 teeth were removed? Didn't think anything of it until I saw all the stitches in my husbands mouth. I feel like if someone had taken their time maybe he wouldn't have been left with so many stitches up the side of his cheeks. I understand this is a business just like everything else but it just felt even more so with everything that went on. If the Dr can afford private school for his children and nice cars for his family maybe some money should go toward the staff and their attitude. read more

I got a consultation here in June 16. I was talked into paying for some very expensive CT X-rays that would further help determine my wisdom tooth situation. It was an out-of-pocket cost that is not covered through insurance (of course it's not and it was around $350). Those X-rays turned out to be quite pointless. Nevertheless, I set up an appointment. I could only do the surgery in summer, which I was very up front about. I set my appointment up for early August 16. In July 16, two weeks before my surgery, they canceled because Dr . Waleland needed surgery on his shoulder. Frustrated, I asked why I wasn't informed of this when I set up my appointment. I was given no clear answer. More importantly, common practice is that you forward your patients info to another surgeon as a backup and as to keep your appointments and integrity. No such common practice here. They tried to set up a later date in Fall which obviously wouldn't work. Now, it is Summer 17 and my wisdom teeth are still not out. I hope this tells you something. Sound surgery = wasted time, stress, and a very creepy vibe as others have stated. Look elsewhere. read more

I just had an impacted wisdom tooth removed here, and I am pleased to say it was the best dental experience of my life. I have dental phobia and extreme needle phobia, so going to any dentist is an uncomfortable for me. I have a regular dentist, but he suggested that for my impacted wisdom tooth, I should use Sound Surgery instead. I am SO glad I did. At the initial consult, I felt very comfortable with Dr. Whelan from the start (which is unusual for me). He had such a positive energy, and patiently addressed all my questions and concerns. The office staff seemed very professional. When it came time for the actual surgery, Dr. Whelan and his assistant were very patient and calming regarding my needle and dental phobias, which I greatly appreciated. I had IV sedation for the surgery itself, so I can't speak to what occurred during that time, however, the nurse was very kind and patient during post op when I was fuzzy and struggling to fully awaken. Finally, the surgery itself seems to have gone extremely well. There is no swelling, no post surgery bleeding, and the pain level post surgery is much lower than I was told to anticipate. All in all, I don't see how this entire experience could have gone more smoothly. If I could give Sound Surgery 10 stars, I would do so. read more

Both my kids have had all their wisdom teeth out, I had an implant, then a tongue biopsy (yes it is painful, after) with Dr. Whelan. It's rare to have a doctor call you at home to check on you, but he does. He knew that I would want to check all his emergency equipment because I'm a nurse with a background in ENT and surgical sedation , and he cheerfully showed me, to my satisfaction. He did our procedures under moderate sedation. (asleep, but not a general anesthetic) The office is thorough, and makes sure you have an honest cost estimate. The receptionist and other staff is very professional, kind, respectful. The pre-procedure and post-procedure teaching is complete, with time to ask all your questions. I was very nervous about getting my wisdom teeth removed. Dr. Whelan gave me a Valium to take before my appointment which really put me at ease. Once I got to their office for my appointment they were quick to get me into the procedure. Dr. Whelan came into the room and asked how I was doing. I told him I was still a little nervous but good. He responded that he was going to give me something for my nerves. He put in the IV and the next thing I knew the procedure was over! I had no pain upon waking up. Over the past 50 years, I have had some horrible experiences while in a dentist's chair. As a result, I'm very apprehensive of dentists in general. That changed with my visits to Dr. Michael Whelan of Sound Surgery. He made me feel more at ease than I ever have before. His office is very comfortable. The people at the front desk are real pro's, they had the prices on the work I was having done completed, and the insurance company contacted and approved, prior to my appointments. And Dr. Whelan's prices were so much more affordable than the other offices I contacted. As far as Dr. Whelan, he is a very personable and easily likable man. His professionalism is commendable. I hope I don't need to have much more dental surgery, but if I do I will definately return to him. I cannot recommend him enough! read more

I cannot believe no one has reviewed Dr Whelan yet! I was suffering from some pain on my right jaw, I knew that my wisdom teeth was bugging me and that I needed to do something soon. I started out seeking a normal dentist, Dr Perkl. His staff had me X-rayed and then he walked in....and said "Kiddo you got some wicked wisdom teeth". Great my first time meeting the man, and that's what sealed my fate for needing an oral surgeon. He told me to seek Dr Whelan and that his office will work on getting a referral ASAP, as they were also infected. Joy! So I called and they were able to get me in the next day, otherwise I would have to wait for another 2 weeks since he was booked up. Walking into the office, the staff were all nice and welcoming. I was a bit nervous to meet Dr Whelan, since this was my first surgical procedure. He walked in and was so soft spoken, and there is a calm nature about him that put me at ease. He explained my situation and went over my X-Rays, I needed to get all 4 out, and they were all bony impactions. He explained the pictures that were taken of each affected tooth, and made sure I understood what was going on. He explained all the risks, and recovery. Upon walking out the consultation room, his staff asked if I wished to schedule surgery with him. I didn't waste any time at all. These bad boys needed to come out soon. My surgery wouldn't be until a month later, but he said I should be okay, by rinsing out with an oral rinse to keep it clean. Molly his Patient Service rep, printed out my expected pay, and what my insurance would pay. She was thorough, and explained everything to me. At this point, I didn't care as long as my insurance would cover a good portion. So I signed on the line, and anxiously waited. The day of my surgery was a breeze, I walked in, they whisked me to the operatory. The gal in there was real sweet, and had a gentle hand. We went through the normal questions, and then Dr Whelan walked in and greeted me. Before he put the IV sedation he went over briefly what we discussed and asked if I still wanted all four out. I agreed, and then he sprayed my arm with some cold numbing spray. All I remember was him saying, "time to put you out, if you can still help us with your opening your mouth once we get started, that would be a great help." I don't recall if I was able to help. I woke up in some pain, and his assistant asked if I was in pain, to which I just nodded. In walked Dr Whelan and he gave me shot of lidocaine which numbed it furthermore. Once I came to, enough they let me go home. Later that evening he called to check up on me, which I thought was fabulous! The recovery itself took a week, and I was pretty miserable, unable to really talk, given my age of 30, with some nice big teeth and deeply set roots, I knew I would be pretty much out of it. I stayed in bed the first 2 days, then got out the house for a nice little walk on the third. I puffed up very nicely, but hid behind dark sunglasses and a hat whenever I went out. There was considerable swelling, and bruising on my right jaw (the worst one), which was very much expected. I didn't eat very much, except lots of soups, pudding, and yogurt. I then was able to swallow pho all cut up like I was 3 again, and that felt like heaven. My Post Op was a week from my surgery, and that is where I got taught how use the irrigation syringe to keep the holes cleaned. I healed up nicely, and expect to make a successful recovery. Dr Whelan did stress for me to call if new symptoms or more pain continues. I still am not eating all I want, as the holes are a pain to clean and it hurts still, but he did mention I wouldn't be back to normal for 2-3 more weeks. I would highly recommend Dr Whelan and his staff to others that are seeking an Oral Surgeon on the north end. They're a great team, and Dr Whelan is very good at what he does!!! read more
