If you don't think there are many independent and affordable cafes in the centre of Glasgow -then think again. Hidden on a side street off Sauchiehall Street, is Soups U. It's just round the corner from Barretts, next to the Sauchiehall Centre car park. It's therefore very conveniently placed for either a shopping pit stop or a bite to eat during your lunchbreak. Despite being a little hidden away - Soups You is really busy. It's quite small too, so it's not always easy to get a table. Turnover is pretty quick though, so you shouldn't have to wait too long for one. As well as offering soups and sandwiches to take away, Soups U does do table service in the cafe. The cafe is filled with blackboards listing the current soups (don't worry, lentil is always on offer), and they even have a suggestions board where you can add your preferred soup for the next week. We ordered two soups - one of them with the sandwich meal deal, and had barely settled into the table before two steaming bowls were set before us. We sampled the lentil (traditional and very tasty) as well as the Chicken Noodle soup (which was jam packed with chicken, mmm!). My only gripes were that the decor left a little too much to be desired, and that it wasn't as cheap as I had expected it to be - £10 for two soups, half a sandwich and a glass of juice. However, with soup that good, I could overlook it! Soups U also have a large selection of cakes - which I have yet to try!

The food is not great here. Soups are homemade, but the sandwiches are cold and not tasty at all. Skip!

The garlic butter with it was not needed, but was also amazing, dipped my mashed potatoes in it. Waiter spent a great deal of time talking to us just as if we known him for a long time it was great. the level of friendliness and hospitality was very impressive. The menu is very nice and not expensive at all. TRUFFLED BRIOCHE- The dish is amazing even though I did not taste any truffle but there was a entire truffle mushroom itself there, the plate they presented it in was annoying to rest the silverware, was a bowl type of plate and the fork kept falling in lol GOLDEN BREEZE- the drink was suggested by our waiter and it was amazing cudos to him! GNOCCHI- WHAT an unfortunate plate. This was to me not a gnocchi.i love the fact that our waited noticed and made sure to ask me if everything was ok with my choice, that shows that the staff cares about customer service. The gnocchi was blend and tasteless it to me was more of a polenta and not a gnocchi it was cooked pan fried and not like a past should so it was not a great plate definitely not a gnocchi. I would definitely recommend the place, not the gnocchi but the place was pretty nice. come and have a try!

Love their food but what I love even more, is how they help to feed the homeless and/or those in need. Whether you're a paying customer or someone in need, EVERYONE EATS THE SAME SOUP! Bravo!!! The Wild Olive Tree is located on Nelson Mandela's Place, inside the St. George's Tron Church of Scotland. The lovely cafe is on the main level. You walk in and get seated for table service; or you can order takeout. This is not a Soup Kitchen per se, but if you're a person of need, you can enter via a side door for free soup and hot beverages to go. They have been in operation since 2015, and in their first three years of operation, have given away 12,000 meals and 13,500 hot beverages! Again, BRAVO!!! All profits and donations from the Cafe go to their two charity partners: Glasgow City Mission and Bethany Christian Trust, to support their ongoing work with some of the city's most vulnerable people. The charities also help with work placement and employability training. How awesome is that?!?! The team at The Wild Olive Tree consists of paid staff, volunteers and work placements. This team of people are awesome! The food is homemade and delicious, customer service is so friendly, and they're so thankful for your visit. If I lived in Glasgow, I'd be a regular customer for sure! The wife ordered their "Fisherman" which is pan seared Scottish coley or pollock (for 27 GBP). The battered fish with the chips was more delicately done here and delicious. As an aside I tried several times to find a place here in Glasgow or in Edinburgh that did a "special" fish and chips, that is breaded with crumbs and not battered, but apparently no one does that healthier old school preparation anymore (and I need to inform my old work colleague who hailed from Glasgow and gave me this inside tip that it's not practiced anymore). I also had a Chieftain IPA. The side of peas were dryish and not flavorful and small portioned and not done as well and tasty as I have had in London or Perth, just saying. We also had their sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert and that was good. The fries were mediocre. Server was friendly and attentive. 4 stars overall and a nice local flavor Glasgow outing.

By chance this past Sunday my boyfriend Mark was getting his camera cleaned a few doors down from the cafe so I gave him my best "I'm hungry eyes" and we decided to pop in for some lunch. The decor is beyond cool, the walls are a tilled map of the world and the the seating areas consist of old bus seats. The staff make you feel welcome straight away and just chat to you as if they are your best pal. I didn't even have my bum on the seat before I was asked did I know what part of Greece, Cyprus was in? Answers on a postcard because no one knew the answer! The table next to us were going in on their all day breakfast which I made a mental note to try at a later date but today I was in the mood for the classic soup and sandwich combo. All the sandwiches and salads are named after locations and the home made soups change daily. I had a toastie with peppers, balsamic vinegar, mozzarella, tomato and onion with lentil and chickpea soup. Mark had a chicken and pesto pannini with the pea and ham soup. The food was just brilliant. Fresh, tasty and filling. I really couldn't have asked for anything more. There was little to no talking as we ate and we both left very clean plates. The highlight for me had to be the soup, I've never had chickpeas in a soup before but it was pretty special. The prices were more than reasonable and I had a lovely earl grey tea with my food while mark enjoyed a beer. The Trans-Europe cafe is one of those special places in Glasgow that is kept alive by its great food, staff and returning customers and I've just put myself firmly in that last category.

For breakfast the Eggs Benedict are amazing, there is a huge range of salads and sandwiches for lunch and on Friday and Saturday nights they now open for dinner. I tried the evening menu a few weeks ago and it was excellent. Beef with black pudding to start, perfectly cooked fish to follow and then really good coffee. At just over £40 for 2 starters, 2 mains, dessert and coffee it is amazing value. I cannot recommend this place enough. If you want a little bit of Europe in Glasgow this is the place to be.

Came here a couple of days ago with colleagues as we had training in the city centre, and it suited (almost) all 4 of us very well! They do your usual lunch options: baked potatoes, toasties, panini, soup and various other sandwiches. Only one of my colleagues didn't manage to find anything to eat, but she is mega-mega-MEGA fussy, so I would urge Tiffany's not to take it personally. I got a tuna and cheese panino, while the others ordered a BLT roll and a steak and onion panino, all of which were enjoyed. Sometimes it's difficult to get a cafe which just does simple lunch offerings and doesn't charge you a ridiculous amount of pennies for it, but I can definitely see myself going back here if I'm ever in need of that again. It wasn't massively busy either, which for around 1-2pm on a weekday in the city centre is nothing short of a miracle. 3 stars only because the tuna in my panino wasn't exactly the best, particularly for £3-odd, but overall I enjoyed it! The BLT did look rather brilliant though, so I might go for that next time.
