It fills my heart with sorrow to learn how people, in such vulnerable mental state, are taken advantage of. The prices for a certification of death are absolutely out of line. I can only imagine how much profit they gain from all of this. Below is the breakdown of prices for the certified death certificates from Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Division of Vital Records vs Kuratko-Nosek Funeral Home and Cremation Services. For clear reasons, I was in a frágil state of mind, and failed to add an alias name on my mom's certificate. I called the next day, and was able to make the correction. No problem. Upon pickup, I was charged an additional $70. It's uncomfortable, I know, but reality is that death is inevitable.

Here is a list of the things they did that were extremely unprofessional and unsympathetic. - As I was saying my final goodbyes to mi Tia: a tall, white, male manager with white hair insisted on interrupting my time with her to try and "clean up her jewelry" to give to the immediate family. - As we were reminiscing with fond memories de mi Tia, he interrupted someones story by reminding us that it was 7:55 and that the family had only paid to be there until 8. - As someone was in the bathroom before leaving, one of the staff members pounded on the door of the bathroom to get them to leave as soon as possible - The staffs overall demeanor felt closed off and rude. Even during their interactions with the family, and the blatant displeased reactions to said interactions, it felt as though they either couldn't pick up social cues, or simply didn't care enough to hide their urgency. Though I am understanding that the job of a funerary home director holds a heavy weight on ones conscience and requires a steadfast demeanor, it also requires empathy, compassion, and patience, none of which I felt during this wake. Though I was dealing with the grief of my Tia, the treatment of the staff made me feel as though our grief was nothing but a paycheck to them. Though this may not be everyone's experience, please keep in mind that how this establishment treats the grief of others isn't subjective to one family.

Oh and also during this time her obituary was erased. they claimed they didn't know how but as soon as I emailed (three times) it was fixed. No accountability. Another month goes by. My Mom's been dead 60 days now mind you. So I email and ask about it. Instead of being told yes the certificates are here I'm told I WAS supposed to call, and that we have an outstanding bill. THEN once they can see we're angry we get a phone call from Angie claiming "Um, you know, uh, we just didn't get a chance to give you guys a call" UMMM YOU KNOW... IT'S BEEN TWO MONTHS! DO BETTER! Kevin- get reliable staff! If you want to make this right with my family you can cut this bill MAJORLY because this is RIDICULOUS. Why are we doing your job for you?!?! What are we paying you for??? DIGNITY left this property get so run down. Totally forgotten about. Numbers and letters lying on the floor that fell off the crypts and filthy. I could write volumes of all the issues but finally....finally updates have been made. There are still no benches to sit on while visiting?? Bathroom is also locked. There were issues of vandalism and homeless in the building so locking the building on down times is understandable. When Woodlawn owned the property it was PRISTINE. We went through the yellow pages and made a list of funeral homes to visit. Ivins Funeral Home was the first one we visited and ultimately the one we chose to have his services held at. The location, price and sincerity was by far the best of all of the funeral homes we had visited. David Moravecek is truly genuine, kind and professional. David answered every question and fulfilled every request of ours. He and his lovely wife treated us and our father with dignity and respect. The location was great, as it is on the edge of the nice little downtown area of Riverside. There was also plenty of parking. The funeral home itself was wonderful, as well. We actually had many guests tell us how comfortable they felt, and how nice they thought the place was. The services for the wake and funeral felt much more personal than they would have at one of those larger corporate owned places... and I'm speaking from experience, my son's services were held at one of those larger corporate owned places.
