This rest area is located on I-85 north in South Carolina. It's the first rest area on I-85 north after the South Carolina Welcome Center just north of the South Carolina-Georgia border. There is no exit number for this rest area. It's located between exits 14 (SC 187 - Pendleton, Clemson) and 19 (US 76 / SC 28 - Clemson, Anderson). This is a small rest stop and would be considered a pretty ordinary one too if it wasn't situated on beautiful Lake Hartwell near Anderson. It sets itself apart from others along the I-85 corridor in SC because it has some pretty nice scenery. You'll often see travelers taking pictures here. Next to the parking lot is a small forest with tall trees, paved walkways, and picnic tables. The forest leads to a red lakeshore that faces south towards the lake and, in the distance, mostly undeveloped lakefront land. It's clean and nicely maintained. In the spring and summer, the ground is covered in green grass. In the fall and winter, pine straw. Wintertime photo: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/south-carolina-rest-area-anderson?select=w5EckMev8WlQg_A2eybFaw#w5EckMev8WlQg_A2eybFaw The property is owned and operated by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. The facilities are old. The restroom building is SCDOT Building No. 2040301. Very basic, but sufficient. Restroom cleanliness is OK at best. There are separate smaller structures housing refreshments and vending machines. Along with accommodating small vehicles, this stop also has a parking lot for semis.

This is a really good rest area on I-85 between Spartanburg and Atlanta. A couple of shady parking spaces exist, but even without them there is a nice area where you can walk down through the trees to the lake. A super place to stretch after spending a few hours fighting the idiots who drive Atlanta. Vending machines, restrooms, pet walking area. All good. Be ready for the guy with the dog who needs money because he's almost out of gas.

This is the last Rest Area on Interstate 85 (I-85) Northbound in South Carolina before the Interstate enters North Carolina - run by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. The restrooms here are a veritable sauna - pretty large restrooms - but no AC. Which makes the restrooms stink to high heaven. Hold your breath when you go in here!

Is there a man who is dressed like a Canadian mounted policeman who patrols this rest area by chance?

no Laura, he 'patrols' there on purpose. but please do not approach this individual as the official law enforcement presence is the South Carolina State Police

These rest areas provide essential services for those of us traveling the interstate system…read morealthough some are much better maintained than others believe me I've stopped at hundreds of these over the years and there are no minimum standards - the amenities in general are based on how much money the states are willing to invest and the employees that are employed to maintain them. This one although older was very clean during our stop. I rarely use the facilities at these rest areas when traveling in the RV, but after walking around to get the blood flowing again after driving for a number of hours I did here. The restrooms were spic n span clean I will say it didn't appear that the traffic was very heavy through the area so your experience may differ depending on what day and time it is. There are plenty of Truck and RV parking spaces and the same can be said for the car side, with easy access from either parking area. If you have a need to take a break this one should work well for you...

I stopped here for the first time in 10+ years. The waitress was so rude and the restaurant that I just got up and left, I walked over to the other part was looking gonna do my laundry, walked around the store and look, and I thought it was a lot lizard approaching me, but it was an employee, between touching my arm and calling me, baby and telling me to let her know if I needed anything. I figured I'd just go on down and get my fuel, not realizing there was food down there. That little girl that's working there has the prettiest smile and even looks like Goldilocks, everything on that bar looks so good. I couldn't decide what I wanted, so I got two plates and it was as good as it looked. I hadn't had food that good since the last holiday with my family, there must be different management for each building because you can tell that front building nobody gives a shit, and the fuel house like it wasn't even a part of that front building. I would definitely stop in there again just to eat in the fuel building, and I love the shop. The truck shop them guys have always been fantastic. Don't waste your time walking that parking lot to that front building, the iron skillet looks like it's halfway shut down. They just need to go ahead and sit at the rest of the way down. It's disgusting in there if you're hungry go in that fuel building that food was really really good.
