Went to their recent show and was honestly blown away at how much they're charging people to see a recital. $40/ticket! This is honestly outrageous to see young children dance. My daughter was interested in seeing what it was all about, and while the children did great, spending $80 for two tickets to a CHILDRENS show feels very over the top, cute dancing and singing but not worth more than a professional show. I would never send my child to a studio that charges this much for children's recitals... i can only imagine what the actual program costs.. welcome to Orange County read more

We left this studio a year ago after a truly traumatic experience. My 8-year-old daughter was forced to sit out of a competition because we missed a single rehearsal--one that wasn't even confirmed until the day of. Despite her dedication, she had to watch all her friends compete without her. Two of the coaches even approached me privately to say how wrong the situation was. Since leaving, we've been shocked at how incredible our new studio is. The difference is night and day. The environment is healthy, supportive, and the instructors have far superior credentials--and to top it off, we're paying half the price. Looking back, it's clear how toxic this place was. Run from this place. The staff/owners are not for your student. They are for their themselves & their paycheck. Although this review is several years overdue, it is still applicable as the owners/staff are still the same people who run the place. My daughter was 7 yrs old at the time and part of the team at SCC. During a practice session, an incident occurred with the gymnastic instructor such that my daughter came home with a big swollen foot that was black and blue. I asked her how she got it and she said that the male gymnastics instructor stomped on her foot. I asked her to show me how it happened and she re-enacted the situation to me. This is her re-enactment of what was done to her by the instructor: She began by standing close to me, looked right and left, then pushed her butt into me which forced me back against the wall. She then looked right and left again then lifted her foot to stomp hard on my foot. And that's how the top of her entire foot became swollen with black & blue bruises. The next day, I took my daughter and spoke with Ms. Michelle (head of the Acro). She seemed very understanding and told my daughter it must have been an accident and that she will talk to the male gymnastic instructor. She said that they had cameras of the place and will look at the video. I followed up with Ms. Michelle the next day. The video clip of the time frame (when my daughter was injured and butt rubbed) was suddenly corrupted. When I asked to see it, Ms. Michelle then said it was missing. I still asked to see it and it took the studio several days before they showed me the video. Yes, the segment when the instructor acted inappropriately towards my daughter as well as injured her foot was missing. The video looked like it had been cut. I asked why there were no injury reports of the incident. Suddenly, I received 3 incident reports within the next two days. The 1st report stated that my daughter sustained an injury because the instructor accidentally stepped on her foot (written by the instructor himself and dated the day of the incident). The 2nd report stated there were no injuries (also written by the instructor and signed by the office staff and dated the day of the incident). The 3rd report stated there was injury but unclear (written & signed by office staff and dated the same day). I couldn't keep track of their changing story. Apparently, they couldn't either. What shocked me the most was not the cover up. I could understand the studio trying to cover themselves from such a serious incident by denying it. I don't respect them for it but can understand human nature. What shocked me the most was how deliberate the gymnastic instructor was in injuring my daughter that he looked around (left and right) to make sure no one was looking before purposely causing harm. When I asked the studio to be accountable to what happened, Renee and Jenna (owners/staff) suddenly started talking about how there were many reports of my daughter misbehaving. This is the 1st time I heard about my daughter's supposed "misbehavior" and this was in direct contradiction to what teachers, friends, parents and people at SCC have said about my daughter. However, let's say that my daughter was misbehaving....sounds like they were suggesting that my daughter deserved to be injured and butt rubbed by a male adult.... Scary. I quickly took my daughter out of there and never looked back. I found out that shortly after we left, there were other incidents with the gymnastics instructor...SCC finally fired him. He was friends with Ms. Michelle and she was the one who had brought him on. Guess his character was so bad that she had to finally acknowledge it and let him be fired. SCC could have saved themselves a lot of headache if they didn't try to cover up what he did to my daughter and held him accountable back then. By the way, in case SCC is thinking of lying about this incident, let me just say that I still have the 3 incident reports where they couldn't get their story straight. I also have the "apology" note from the instructor himself stating that he was just playing around with my daughter when he pushed his butt into her (butt rubbed her) and that he accidentally stepped on her in the process causing her injury. I also have my daughter's journal account of the incident that she wrote as a 7 yr old. She was so distraught by what happened that I asked her if she would like to write it in her journal to get it out. read more

I am not used to add reviews unless deserved. My daughter has been in the school for 2yrs she is 5 now finishing combo2 moving to combo3 in August. I love their teachers, all are great beginners and experienced. Their musical theatre director Mrs. Marji is great teacher with lots of experience. I like her strong technique and discipline which help students learn lots. Mrs Francesca and Cathy are great as well and treatment to kids is very nice. We are leaving the conservatory because we are moving to other state, otherwise we will stay in the school. Their summer courses are super fun as well. I would not add a picture of my daughter unless it is well deserved. I strongly suggest you try this school. read more

I usually try to write good reviews because I like to support local businesses but when I write a negative one, it means a lot. I can no longer recommend SCC as an elite dance studio. If you are a parent of a competitive child, please take them elsewhere. There are so many great studios in OC, this one is not the one you want to sign your kid to. My daughter started at SCC with academy dance classes when she was 3 yo. She is now 11. She was on the aerial competitive team for 3 years. She had such a bad experience with the team coach, as well as other older students, that after 8 years at SCC, I had to pull her out. The team coach and some other older students were rude to my daughter and the coach sometimes ignored her. She clearly didn't like my daughter. My daughter was pretending to be sick, not to go to class and was coming home crying. After 8 YEARS!!! and supporting the studio during the pandemic, taking a lot of privates ($$$), you would think SCC cared. Well, not so much. The team coach acted very unprofessionally. Among other issues, she had scheduled another student during my daughter's private lesson without informing me, and the coach thought I should be grateful because I was not charged (which is not the point obviously!!!!!). The coach also recommended the use of supplements for students in the competitive team. Here is an excerpt of the email sent by the aerial competitive coach on 1/11/2022 that all competitive parents received about the supplements (I don't think it's okay for a coach to make these recommendations as they are unlikely to be qualified to make such determination): "Supplements Now that the students are competitively training on top of having a full day of school, it makes it difficult for them to focus during class, or complain about being tired while training so I would like all students on BCAAs and glutamine to help them with training during classes. All competitive athletes take BCAAs to help their muscle fibers react properly while they are training (and focus) so they can build muscles and Glutamine is taken for the recovery process so their body can recover faster. This allows your children to train multiple hours over continuous days. These supplements are powder-based that go in water while they are taking classes and training at the studio. I have worked out a deal with Nutrishop in Lake Forest so parents can receive a 15% discount off all of the products for SCC students. The supplements that I would like the students taking are FDA approved and safe for ALL age groups much included our younger students. The owner of Nutrishop has a background in nutrition and has been in the body building industry for over a decade and understands the amount of overtraining our Aerial Students are currently doing to prepare for competition and showcases and will make sure to guide parents with the correct supplement purchases. You are all welcome to purchase outside of Nutrishop If you like, they do offer supplements at places like Amazon, Costco, CVS, and other sites, but please make sure that you purchase the correct supplements." I don't think this is appropriate for a coach to recommend supplements to young children. The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend supplements for children, and says eating a well-balanced diet is best for young athletes. Nutrients need to be consumed together to be most effective. Supplements may also interact with prescription or over-the-counter medications, causing unwanted side effects. Prescription amino acid supplements may be safer but still cause severe stomach pain, fatigue and upset stomach. ***Soon after I posted this review, SCC posted a story on Instagram stating "Leave us a review on Yelp for 10% OFF at @dsu.scc * Must show a screenshot of review to front desk to apply promo" Be cautious about reviews posted around 4/26/2022 or soon after as they might be from well-intentioned parents who fell for a marketing ploy to bury negative comments with or without their knowledge!!!!! read more

I am a stickler for customer service and every single person I have spoken to here delivers amazing service each time. From when we initially signed up about a year ago to now, any time I have a simple or complex question, these women are attentive, polite and informative. *** While it was important for me to mention the above, what drove me to write this post is the above-and-beyond reproach of my daughter's teacher Ms. Chelsea. My daughter is hard of hearing and lately her hearing has decreased even more. We never had an expectation that Ms. Chelsea can direct special attention to our daughter just because of her hearing; afterall, this is a group class. Nonetheless, Ms. Chelsea has artfully figured out how to address our daughter and give her extra guidance in a way that ensures she is receiving the lesson while still teaching the entire class at the same time. Our daughter knows to stay close to Ms. Chelsea or when she can't be, watch her carefully as she demonstrates. But Ms. Chelsea always makes sure our daughter is able to follow along. Ms. Chelsea has a true talent in dealing with children. She isn't only great with my daughter. I watch her give specialized care to any child that needs it in a particular moment before moving on with the lesson. So to everyone at South Coast Conservatory, and a special shout out to Ms. Chelsea, a very sincere thank you to you. We appreciate you more than words can describe. You all have made this dance experience memorable in the best of ways. read more

Buyer beware! Do not sign a conservatory contract. My daughter was in ballet conservatory last year. We switched program due to multiple children complaining about the male coach. I wanted to give my daughter a fresh start. She join the musical theatre conservatory. Three months in, she has had strep throat three times. She has missed multiple classes and will miss all of the Winter shows. I told the director I wanted to take her out since she is not making connections with kids due to her absences and illness. I was informed today that it is not possible to leave or get out of the contract even though it's all health related! Now I have to seek legal counsel against the conservatory. This place is concerned with money and not children. Again, after a year of conservatory participation I highly encourage parents to not sign any contract with SCC. Soooo deeply disappointed with the facility. Never again! read more

From a concerned individual... I'm writing this in hopes to help others know that they are not alone and to prevent any other student from having to undergo this. Class environment was extremely abusive and when concerns were raised, virtually nothing was done. Please take your children somewhere where they can receive actual dance training. The studio seems to only be concerned with their image and it is not a healthy class environment especially when you start reaching the more serious levels. They are so infatuated with this image of a professional school and they have such a potential to be great, as they do have some very world renowned coaches and teachers, but they are allowing a very abusive teacher to continue just because of their reputation. From the outside it looks okay, but anyone who has gone through the program leaves with injuries and no one who's been apart of it, thinks it's okay. read more

Hip-hop level 1, Saturday 10 am. 14 kids with 2 instructors. What was supposed to be a 55-min class was only 20 minutes long! They only did a stretch. No hip-hop teaching. At first the main teacher was accommodating 2 new students for the first 18 minutes (why couldn't you take those pictures AFTER class?). The instructor's helper is not a dancer. Then the teacher was experimenting with her hair styles. Yes, your hair is long and beautiful, but couldn't you have taken care of it BEFORE the class? The last 15 minutes was lost because half of class decided to use a restroom and the instructor was waiting for all the kids to return. Sad... read more

My daughters have been dancing at SCC for over 3 years and we could not be more pleased. The instructors are wonderful and teach the students the proper technique from the start. My youngest started when she was 2.5 and even at that age they made sure they were doing the dance steps correctly. The instructors love teaching dance and it shows; they have a passion for teaching and it makes the kids get that same passion. The annual performance is more than just a bunch of dance classes getting on stage for a few minutes then off they go. There is always a theme (ex: Princess & the frog, Disneyland, Neverland, etc) that all the dances as well as musical theatre classes have in common which makes it a full show and as an audience member you want to see the entire show. The wide range of dance styles offered makes it a well rounded studio that will make any dancer happy! read more

Terrible experience with this dance company. But luckily you'll see that in other reviews also. I understand businesses are going through covid in different ways, but the lack of clear communication, terrible policy for children, and lack of communication in general is unacceptable. Took extensive communication to be refunded for 2 months we never danced. More emails.. won't return phone calls for money for a summer performance that never happened. We literally never performed. We never even learned a dance! We registered in February and danced 1 month & never went back. And literally REFUSE to reimburse us for a costume we NEVER got nor learned a dance for nor was a recto always help. Absolutely crazy. Our contract for our performance obviously never accounted for covid. And a business with strong principals who would like to see dancers return, would be gracious to the customer. Angilynn has been dancing here since age 5. She started at somewhere else. The difference is tremendous. She is now 12 years old. We love it here. Anais, her 5-year old sister, also loves her dance school. She's been with SCC now for 2 years. This is a great school for beginners to advance. Their dance teams achieve great rewards for their performances. We highly recommend this wonderful school. You will love Jenna, the owner, and the entire staff. My daughter was on a competing team here and was bullied so badly by 3 teammates that she would pretend to be sick so we would come pick her up. This is a girl that lived and breathed dancing since age 3. From August to March she endured this bullying. I contacted the team coach in January when my daughter finally admitted what was happening. I contacted the team Coach and the director of the competitive teams. They acted very concerned and I was relieved, but in reality they only had a discussion with the entire team, but zero follow up from the teacher or director with me. The bullying then went to completely ignoring my daughter like she didn't exist. Imagine being 9 and spending 12 hours a week dancing with a team with 3 members refusing to acknowledge your existence, mocking you, laughing at you & refusing to speak to you. I contacted the team coach again and director. Another team talk went down, but again the bullying didn't stop with the main ring leading child. Finally my daughter couldn't take it anymore and she was ready to walk away from dance altogether just to get away from her. After I informed SCC we were leaving the team due to constant bullying, then and ONLY then did they put the ringleader on probation. By then it was too late. There's lots of great studios in OC and SCC has the potential to be great all around, but they need to seriously address the enabling of bullying as they are getting quite the reputation for this around OC and the competitive dance world. My daughter is happily at another competitive dance studio and thriving, on 4 teams and doing 3 solos. SCC, please take bullying more seriously at your studio as my daughter ended up depressed and nearly quit dance permanently and your lack of action is to blame. read more
