Second, after owning my boat for just about 10 years, Barrett Canfield and his team still stand by me with the same enthusiasm, graciousness and attention that they offered at the time of my purchase. And it was serendipitous that several years later he was brokering a used boat that I had spec'ed out at one time, but couldn't afford. As a now former sailboat owner, the best advice I could give a prospective boat buyer is get a great broker who understands sailing and the boat you are trying to buy. For someone selling a boat, find someone that knows your boat and the boat brand. For me that was Paul Briant, he helped me sell my 2001 Beneteau Oceanis 361. He's an expert on all things Beneteau (and more, but we mainly discussed Beneteaus). After the sale of my boat fell out of contract with a different boat broker, I was pretty disheartened. The buyer was led to believe there was an issue with the shaft log due to an unknowledgeable boat inspector (get a great inspector as well). The other boat dealer/salesperson shrugged her shoulders and was no help. Best thing I did then was go talk to the resident San Diego Beneteau boat brokers at South Coast. Enter Paul Briant and South Coast yachts. He immediately recognized the component that the inspector called out as a sacrificial component designed to protect the propellor shaft. There was nothing wrong with my boat; the inspector called out a design feature! Needless to say we switched to Paul and he became our broker. The first thing he did was take the boat out to get to know her and how she sailed and steamed. Most listing brokers don't do that. Paul got to know my boat and as an experienced Beneteau dealer/Captain/Sailor he could talk thru all of the finer points of how she handled. After 3+ years of yacht shopping, and encountering dozens of brokers in the San Diego area, Dea Allen of South Coast Yachts was the perfect fit for us. The personal dedication Dea gave to us made us feel that we were her only and most important clients. Of course, we knew that she was working with several other clients at the time...but never did she illuded to us "wasting her time" with our long, drawn-out decision-making process. Together, we found a Bayliner 3788 listed by another brokerage in Long Beach. (This is not the appropriate platform to describe the fraudulent and nefarious actions of the listing brokerage...so I will spare you the horrors.) We elected to purchase the Bayliner as it had the layout and styling we were searching for. Due to the age of the boat (2002), we knew that we would be undertaking a renovation effort...which we welcomed. However, after the purchase, we encountered some mechanical challenges with this vessel, as well as other hidden defects not known/disclosed to us or our broker. (Although I encourage all buyers to use a buyer's broker to help identify such challenges, the problems we encountered were difficult to identify due to the fraud of the listing broker.) It seemed that our few challenges turned into many. However, Dea and her broker, Barrett Canfield, became an endless bank of trusted resources and referrals.
