Had what I thought was an emergency so I drove to Selma from Fresno because I had going here for years. I met a young woman named Bebe and she along with the other young ladies who work the front explained to me that they were all booked up. They gave me a place I could go to in Fresno and wrote it down for me. Well Bebe seeing my concern about our dog Winston, took back the note and got me in! The reason why I thought it was an emergency is when you dog is hurt and shivering what else should a dog lover think? So the vet examined him and gave a prescription and said, if Winston is not better by Friday or Monday at the latest give them a call after 9:00 am. My 13 year old beagles quality of life declined very quickly. I couldn't get her in to see a vet anywhere for approximately 2 weeks. I drove to South V and gave them her symptoms. They told me they were completely booked but could squeeze her in between appointments. They immediately took her back and did X-rays. The doctor then explained she had congestive heart failure. I took my 6 pound Yorkie in for a check up in January 2024. I was told she had a broken tooth and it should be extracted. I made an appointment for February 7, 2024 for 1 extraction and teeth cleaning. I dropped her off at 8am as requested. When I picked her up at 4pm I was told they pulled EIGHTEEN/18 teeth!!!! I have been a client here for 15+ years but my belief in and trust of this place a thing of the past. I will never ever ever do business there nor will I trust them with my pets. We took our dog to one of the local emergency rooms and they wanted 4-6k for her surgery because she had pyometra. We decided to call around and we were referred to South County and what a blessing it was. The staff was so attentive in person and so nice over the phone. You can tell the doctors really care for the pets they take care of. We paid a little under $900 for everything and our dog needs to recover still, but we know she was well taken care of and would wholeheartedly refer anyone to here! I have made several rounds with other Veterinary offices in my local area and have established this place as my Lily girls permanent vet. It is not overpriced, it is not overly busy, and the techs get straight the point. I like that this vet is honest and is upfront about what to expect. There are no unexpected fees or services and the facility itself is kept up well. The building is a bit run down, however it is kept clean and very organized. The prices for services, vaccines, x-rays are the best I have come across. Overall a place I would recommend to others in my area. read more

I am so saddened to say, I will never step foot in this buisness again. I've been coming here and trusted Dr Hatayama with all my fur babies lives for 16 years. Today, while I was sitting in the exam room waiting for my dog to get an xray, this employee that I have never seen there before, comes in and right off the bat, tells me what my charge is going to be. I tell her I was told what the price would be over the phone 2 days prior. Her excuse was, x-rays are going up in price. She tells me if I dont like it, I can leave and find some other place to do the xray. I just drove 70 miles, 140 miles round trip and 2 1/2 hours waiting to be seen and im talked like this by this snot- nosed little girl, who also gave me a look like, go ahead, make my day. I took my pets here many times because they were affordable and he pretty much got the job done but my dog was not doing well and I took her there and he said she had milk fervor That her puppies were draining the calcium from her body. So he gave me some medicine and sent me home as she got worse I took her in 3 day latter but durning those days I call everyday as her condition worsened and he let telling me to let the medicine work and to keep herrthe morning she was Just flopping. (4day from my first visit till this time) I knew this was about it for her. So this morning I did not have an appointment number for for being sick and the first day they just sent me home set gonna be OK don't let the puppies nurse so I got her home I did let the puppies nurse and gave her the medicine it was so she had calcium in her butt anyhow the fourth day she was so bad she just laughed in my arms and she just open your eyes and look at me and she was telling me please don't let me die I want to take care of my puppies. I was there with her from 7:30 in the morning and it was already 1030 and she was just getting worse and worse and I go how long they told me you were walking just have to wait till we call you but they were not nice they were rude and just matter-of-fact I just couldn't take it anymore and I said God dammit dying she's dying I need somebody now I can't wait anymore! And they finally sent somebody out to look at her and the girl said oh her eyes are clear and she looks fine and I said no she doesn't she's dying she goes oh she's not dying so about 10 minutes they put me in a room and that same person came back in and she looked at it and she said OK will be back and now I'm just in a room standing another hour goes by funny doctor came in and he said to me oh she's not a very good shape and then I said yeah and he goes well I'm going to keep her overnight with that be OK and I said there's gonna be somebody here during the night and he said no but we check in on him and she'll be OK so I finally left there at around 12 in the afternoon and came home and I called during the day just before they close the message she's doing fine and then the whole night I cried over her worried about her I just wish I never left her there they called me at 9 o'clock in the morning asking me to come in When they came in at 9 o'clock in the morning Callie was dead she was there alone that night and I couldn't be there with her and she died wasn't there hold in her it wasn't there to come for her because it took her for me! They have no remorse they showed no caring no nothing no nothing for my baby she was dead and all I got was a 9 o'clock in the morning we came in and she was already passed away he didn't say sorry is it not one remorseful word so it time I came back to the hospital they said oh no not you you're not allowed in here and the reason is why because I was in the emergency room and I was yelling she's dying dammit get someone to help me and they were mad at me for that but yet they let my dog die and they kick me out after they killed my dog I can't say enough about how shitty those people are in that dog hospital I will say though Dr. Hayttiyama he's actually a good doctor but his dad is the worst ever. If your dog is really sick whatever you do don't take your dog there because it will die I am so angry at those people I wish I could financially do something I don't know what I could do but they killed my dog my dog had poison in her system and I told Dr. Hayattiyama I'm here I thought it was that when he called me in that day talk to me about Callie can you show me the blood test sample day he said I don't know what happened to her! This will be a difficult review to write and keep unbiased, but it's true and should be taken to mind. This vet is fine for simple procedures and shots. In fact, they're probably the best around because of low costs. DO NOT have even THE SIMPLEST surgery or anything requiring an anesthetic of any kind though if you care about your pet's life. Spend the extra money and go somewhere else. Today, my dog went in to correct what Dr. Hatayama explained was basically a dog version of cauliflower ear (the thing boxers typically get from ruptured blood vessels in the ear) and we figured while he was put down for surgery, to finally get him neutered as well. We were told this would be fine- they made no objections or any indications of any kind that this would be a difficult procedure for them in the slightest. We brought our pet in early Saturday morning and were told to pick him up on Monday, since they would be closed on Sunday. While we were eating breakfast about a mile away, we received a phone call from the veterinary office saying the surgery was done sooner than expected, and that we could pick our pet up right away. We went right over after eating, and as soon as we got there we were told by the receptionist that there was a problem. We were not allowed to see our pet and we had to sit in the waiting room and wait for about 20 minutes or so without being told anything. What raised an eyebrow with me was that the receptionist made an off-hand comment on my dog being so large- 180 lbs. My dog was just weighed that day to be 108 lbs., so she was clearly mistaken or a little dyslexic. I noticed she went through some paperwork and looked for a long time after I corrected her about the weight- that raised a red flag for me. When they were finally ready to see us, we were told that he had died after the surgery due to an enlarged heart. They didn't mention any kind of complications with medications or anesthetics that they gave the animal, no complications with procedure, and took NO RESPONSIBILITY WHATSOEVER. All they said was "well, after we took some x-rays (posthumously) we saw that he had an enlarged heart and he could have died at any time." The dog was brought in healthy without any immediately life-threatening conditions, to undergo routine surgery, they killed him, and no responsibility was taken nor apologies given. The doctor (who was there minutes ago to receive us and presumably perform the surgery) was no longer there to deliver the bad news or offer any kind of rational explanation. He either fled the scene, or left my dog's life in the hands of his team of butchers. I admittedly lost my shit and flew off the handle, refusing to pay for the surgery or any of the medication which I returned to them nor listen to any of their nonsensical bullshit about him coincidentally dying of an enlarged heart at that very moment that they repeated ad nauseam. Why did they rush the procedure? He was originally slated to come home Monday, but they decided to plow through it in under half an hour and called us back to pick him minutes after leaving. Why didn't they let us see him as soon as we came back for him? So they could come up with a cover story? Why was the doctor not available to comment on this epic failure? All we got over and over was "enlarged heart... he could have gone at any time..." on repeat by vet techs not qualified enough to formulate a rational answer. My theory on what happened? They gave my dog too much anesthetic and killed him. They mistakenly said he weighed 180 lbs. (instead of 108) in casual conversation- I'm willing to bet they thought that's how much he weighed and drugged him accordingly. So to recap- go for the cheap shit if you must. DO NOT put your pets' lives in their hands if you care about them. Their incompetence and irresponsibility claimed my 5 year old, formerly extremely active and healthy German Shepherd's life well before it was due. I'll update this review with any new, relevant information I get back from them. read more

I am conflicted in writing this review. It's true what others have said: long phone lines (I clocked mine at 20 minutes), long wait times to be seen, and a dirty, smelly atmosphere. In their defense, they do need more staff, which is why the admin girl can barely get to any phone calls- she's dealing with all of the customers and patients by herself! They also offer a $40 office visit. I came in because my cat was acting quite lethargic and lost lots of weight. When we saw Dr. H, we told him about her previous bout with bronchitis and her lifelong asthma. We spent about 25 minutes inside the room with him, and I'd say 7 full minutes were spent actually talking about my cat. He is a nice guy, don't get me wrong, but he went on a tangent beginning around the topic of wild animals (which I thought might have been relevant) and finishing at the election. I tried to steer the conversation back to my babygirl without being rude. He said she seems okay, that cats sometimes lose weight and get sleepy from asthma medication, and to change her medication schedule. I left with a $40 office fee, renewed hope, and a fuller wallet, thinking I beat the system and finally found an affordable vet. 2 weeks later, Pip was a lot worse, and we ended up choosing another vet in Fresno. Blood tests, x-rays, and $575 later, we found out she had a tumor growing on her spine, amongst other things. In hindsight, I take the blame because I didn't request these tests to Dr. H. He is probably used to lower income patients, and tries to keep the options affordable. But at what cost? TL;DR Dr. H is a nice guy, provides affordable options, and doesn't try to gimmick you into purchasing any unnecessary medical treatments. On the other side, do your research on what the problem might be before coming in, and REQUEST to have specific tests/procedures (blood work, x-rays) done. read more

Our 12 wk old yorkie caught parvo and someone recommended us to take him here. we dropped him off on a Monday. they admitted him right away and he was discharged on Friday (5days). We couldn't have thank them enough. Efrain was the tech who cared for him all week. The tech was so calm and pleasant to talk to during this difficult time. The staff also encouraged and allowed us to call and visit him daily. Yes, it is a small vet and smells right when you walk in. But the care was exceptional and the services didn't rob our bank. I had been going to SCV for about 8 years. I had a cat that needed dental work, so I took her in. They took several teeth, but not all of them, and I think that is the first mistake. She came home and ate some, but not her usual amounts. I went back and got pain meds, they only gave me 3 days worth, and they didn't help much. She continued to lose weight. I force fed her, but the antibiotics and pain meds made her vomit. Stopped pain meds, and took her back for 6 days to force feed her snd care for her while I was out of town. I returned, only to be told she was eating and drinking on her own, and was no longer vomiting. Yeah! WHAT A LIE! I got her home, she had actually LOST 7 ounces, and would not eat, and would vomit if force fed!! I called the very next morning, wanted her tube fed, and they wouldn't let me bring her back in! Sabrina just kept repeating "We've done all we can do for her, you'll need to take her somewhere else"! REALLY?! NO ACCOUNTABILITY! I spent $400 for 6 days to have my cat fed, only to have her lose weight and come home in worse shape!! The next vet I took her to said she was too far gone to bring back. It was no quality of life. I had to let my sweet Wendi go! My 12yo "Puppycat", who's bloodwork was perfect before her dental, only to be starved by SCV! I will never go there again! read more

Missy went in July 6th-died July 10th 2018 I wrote this when it first happened and we have been so saddened and exhausted by the outcome it has taken me this long to post. I just want everyone to hear this story: I dropped our dog Missy off Friday to be spayed and to repair a hip out of place. Dr said simple procedure they do all the time. They called me Monday and said shes eating drinking and walking and ready to go home. When I went to pick her up she had to be carried to my car because she was NOT able to walk (I figured it was because of the major surgery she had) an hour after I brought her home she was bleeding non stop from incision from her hip and out her back end. I called and nurse told me it was normal and it would take up to 2 days for her to recover and to give her meds. Well... the moment I brought her her home she was not eating or drinking (could not give her meds) or wanting to move.. I was so confused but trusted what they had told me. For the next almost 24 hours she just laid there motionless still bleeding and I kept changing bandages so many times I lost count...tried to get her to get up and walk and she would just collapse . Called the next morning and they said to bring her back in. I did and the next morning (today) got a call that she passed away last night. After trying to calm down I called and demanded to talk to the Dr. he proceeded to accuse me of keeping her outside because when she arrived her temp was 105. I told him she was indoors the whole time and very lethargic. I told him that she probably had an infection from the surgery and that is why her temp was so high. He again had no response. He said she was bleeding rectally and could not give me a reason why & kept putting blame on his staff stating that "the staff" said she was good to go home. My thought is, who's the dr here? Why wouldn't he of checked my poor dog before releasing her? Obviously something was going on! Bottom line Missy is dead under circumstances that have could been avoided if this place was more thorough with their patients! South County Vet in Selma is solely responsible for this and I just want to put out warning for others that this could happen to you and your pet. This place used to be our go to vet but NOW I am so disgusted and disappointed at how this entire situation was handled! read more

two weeks ago as of today I had to lay my dog to to rest. I took her here bc it was affordable AND I was going to receive her ashes only in the Urn without extra cost. My dog was diagnosed with lung cancer and she was declining super quickly so we had to be quick with where to take her and was recommended this place. Only reason I gave it two stars instead 1 is because of the cost and the private ashes. But the ladies there are rude, I called to follow up about my dogs ashes (as I was told to do so) and the lady was so rude and was like "did we call you, we have to call you when it's ready" like ok sorry?? You told me to call?? Then literally not even an hour later I get a call that my dogs ashes are ready!!! When the lady had just told they weren't and said "as soon as her ashes get here we will call u right away, we call the same day when ready" obviously not. And Then I was I have to wait a whole next day to pick them up bc you guys close in the next 10 mins!? Ugh. I am so thankful for Dr. Hatayama. He has been our fur families' primary doctor for the past 10 years. I live in an impoverished neighborhood with tons of strays, because of Dr's reasonable prices I am able to rescue these babies and find them homes. If not for Dr. our animal emergencies would have turned to fatalities. Recently we brought in another of our rescues, a neglected kitten that got into some rat poison. We were looking at a bill of $300, waaaaay out of our budget. We felt forced to put the kitty down. But the compassion of Dr and his staff shined thru as always. The staff is odd, loud and lacks professionalism. You will leave the clinic knowing every single employees life dilemma of the day (they converse publicly). The wait time over the phone is ridiculous. The receptionist answers saying, well YELLING. "SOUTH COUNTY VET HOLD PLEASE!!!" and 15-20 minutes later, they answer and you're rushed through the conversation. It smells foul when you first walk in but your sense of smell gets used to it over the 3 hours you have to wait to be seen by the doctor. The prices are phenomenal, but are actually pretty practical considering the wait time, staff and dirty facility (due to high traffic?) On a good note, Dr. Hatayama is really nice and has such an interesting personality which is quite comical. The entire staff seems to have a passion for animals, even the receptionist. With all that said, I'd actually recommend this place if you need good care for your pet and cant afford the other guys. If you cant stand bad manners, the stench and dirty language. In 2014, I went to a well-known veterinary hospital in town as my dog had stones and he was sick. They told me...pay $3000 for the surgery or put the dog to sleep. We didn't have the money at the time and we were stressed. We had to make a decision within an hour and I remember traveling far to South County Veterinary Hospital years ago and they have been great but since it was farther away from where I live, I figured I would go local. But I wanted a second opinion and I was willing to travel an hour.. So, I called and they said, "don't put your dog to sleep, bring it here". My x-rays were sent to SCVH and they accommodated my time of traveling to their hospital as they were closing. I traveled to Selma, brought my dog in to get the surgery done and left him overnight to make sure he was fine and eating and for $120 including medicine, my dog survived. Dr. H didn't understand why the veterinary hospital couldn't do the simple procedure and why they charged so much. But I made my decision that no matter the distance, all my pets will be going to SCVH. I've been to several vets and while prices fluctuate, their prices are quite high to what I get from SCVH. When it comes to compassion for owners of animals and when it comes to helping people, South County Veterinary Hospital has been there for all my dogs from the past and present. I am grateful to Dr. H and the staff and I don't care if the distance is a bit far from me, I will travel that far for customer service, price and simply this veterinary hospital is the best! read more

I won't go to any other Vet. Dr.H doesn't have much of a bed side mannor but he is straight forward & is one of the best vets in the area. He is very affordable. When our Rowdy was shot while we were hunting a couple of Christmas's ago in a old marajauna grow we brought him here & Dr.H saved him & he didn't break ($) us either. Not only that we bring all our hounds here when needed. Yes there are a few things they could fix like a sick animal entrance but puppies should be held & they tell you that to keep from getting parvo. I have been coming to see Dr. Hatayama since I was a teenager living in the country, and that was about 20 years ago now. He's very kind to me but I can see what others say that sometimes his bed side manner seems to be lacking. However I have never questioned his competence or his love of animals. There have been several times I have come in with one of my pets (currently 3 cats and 1 dog), and he has waived all fees and given us medication free of charge. We have a cat with stomatitis so we see him pretty frequently. I definitely recommend seeing Dr. Hatayama. read more

Dr. H and his staff are AMAZING. The pricing is so much cheaper on everything except xrays and stool samples than pretty much anywhere else in Fresno or Clovis. The drive to Selma is worth it. Dr H is very knowledgable and has good old fashioned advice along with modern medical techniques. He did a better spay on my dog than any other vet has done on any of my other dogs throughout the years. He did a bilateral ACL repair on one of our dogs we adopted from the SPCA and 10 years later she has arthritis at 14 years old but the ACL repair is still good.
