Brilliant family celebration We chose The Manor for my 80th…read moreBirthday Celebration, as we had stayed there before and always found it welcoming and comfortable and good value. My plan was to have a weekend with my partner, my children , grand children and sisters and their husbands (Total 31 people in all) with a lunch on the Saturday with 10 more relations who could make the journey and back in a day. As it happened the numbers were ideal as we were able to use all the bedrooms and have the hotel to ourselves for the weekend, with a few of the people staying a few extra days before and after. The atmosphere was very relaxed and every one had a fantastic time. It was a great opportunity for my grandchildren (teenage or a bit older) to get to know each other and have fun together - some live abroad and others at some distance from each other. The lunch on the Saturday went off very well with everyone very much at ease. The food was very good with a varied menu that I had agreed in advance with Tim the owner and the Dining Room suited our number very well. The next day we celebrated the 60th birthday of my son in law who had driven over with his family from Austria and we had another celebratory lunch, this time there were 17 of us and again we had a lovely meal. The hotel rooms were very comfortable and there was enough flexibility to have a few extra beds for some children. Tim and his team were very friendly and helpful and made everyone very welcome. A special mention to Helena and Angie, and Matt the chef. Highlight for me were the lunches and also the breakfasts where everyone was able to mingle very happily in a totally relaxed atmosphere. For me it was the highlight of my year and I have to thank Tim and his Team for making it such a happy and memorable time

The staff were efficient and a good balance of informal/formal. The food was great. This hotel offers so much with it being in such a great location for outdoor pursuits, however, they have their own lovely grounds if you fancy a bit of a walk. Look out for the summer when I am sure lunch and dinner will be served on the terrace.

Whilst the restaurant in the hotel, where my partner and I went for dinner, was nicely decorated and rumoured to have a great reputation, I left disappointed. The food was pleasant, not amazing, despite being rather pricey - up to £15 for the main meal, and £7 for a starter. The choice wasn't extensive, and for someone who doesn't like pates or terrines, that ruled out a sizeable chunk of the menu. I think I could have tolerated this had the cheapest bottle of wine not been marked up hideously, but the straw that broke the camel's back, for me, was the Molten Brown fraud. As a Molten Brown fan, I know my stuff, and know a bottle of Naranji when I see / smell one. So, what's a restaurant and hotel which apparently justifies its higher prices under the tag of 'luxury' doing, PRETENDING to have Molten Brown products in the bathrooms when, in fact, they were nothing of the sort. Was it a Lidl equivalent in a bit to save costs? Why the lies? I'm still bitter, to this day. So, to summarise: Decent food (and nice fish, freshly caught), good bottle of wine, although pricey. Lovely views out onto the waters. But didn't get a sense of value for money at all, which I felt was a great shame.

I had my wedding reception in Penny Square Barn. What an amazing venue this was for a wedding…read morereception. The barn is owned by the fabulous farmer Bruno and Gill, such wonderful people! I stayed with Bruno and Gill for B&B and one of my fondest memories is having a bottle of vino and a gas with Gill in the kitchen. Honestly Batcombe is just a fantastic place with some amazing friendly, interesting people. Bruno had just put in toilets when we got married here which was fantastic and the barn had not been used all winter so we had a lot of cleaning up to do. Its no frills but it makes it for economic sense as a wedding venue if you have the vision and want to get married in a glorious location. The main barn itself is gorgeously rustic, just put some dichroic floods as a backdrop and it becomes wonderfully atmospheric. We had a friend climb around like a monkey and do an amazing job on lighting and hung long swathes of black fabric over the not so pretty metal door entrance to the barn. In the smaller barn annex we also hung fabric to disguise the galvanised roof. We were able to have a fire going outside and allowed to have fireworks (before 10pm of course) and a flamethrowing fire engine. The villagers were just fantastic and welcoming and Bruno was an absolute star! Not only was he a bell-ringer, but he ran the bar at the village hall and made sure we had enough fuel to run the genny for the weekend. Barn does get cold at night so its worth renting a couple of space heaters. We got a TENS from Mendip council and ran our own bar which was fab. This is a beautiful quiet village so its not the spot to pound music late into the night as noise does carry but its a perfect venue for an event such as a wedding in the summer.
