My plan was to have a weekend with my partner, my children , grand children and sisters and their husbands (Total 31 people in all) with a lunch on the Saturday with 10 more relations who could make the journey and back in a day. As it happened the numbers were ideal as we were able to use all the bedrooms and have the hotel to ourselves for the weekend, with a few of the people staying a few extra days before and after. The atmosphere was very relaxed and every one had a fantastic time. It was a great opportunity for my grandchildren (teenage or a bit older) to get to know each other and have fun together - some live abroad and others at some distance from each other. The lunch on the Saturday went off very well with everyone very much at ease. The food was very good with a varied menu that I had agreed in advance with Tim the owner and the Dining Room suited our number very well. The next day we celebrated the 60th birthday of my son in law who had driven over with his family from Austria and we had another celebratory lunch, this time there were 17 of us and again we had a lovely meal. The hotel rooms were very comfortable and there was enough flexibility to have a few extra beds for some children. Tim and his team were very friendly and helpful and made everyone very welcome. A special mention to Helena and Angie, and Matt the chef. Highlight for me were the lunches and also the breakfasts where everyone was able to mingle very happily in a totally relaxed atmosphere. So I am an expat now living and running and award winning small inn located in Woodstock Vermont so my standards and expectations are high, and this place delivered. So why not a 5 star....carry on reading. I had been notified by some UK clients of my inn that the Pig chain was a happening place, so on my UK November road trip I spent a night here and had lunch and dinner. The staff are all youthful, perhaps the UK ones are a little 'too home counties' but they all seem to know their jobs and carry out their daily tasks with efficiency. Many of the staff are the real deal from France, and great they were too. My room was comfy luxe, small but very comfortable with a good bathroom and deep bath. It was clean, fresh and the mini bar/tv etc all did the job. An old Roberts radio, now kitted out for digital was a nice touch. I overlooked the gardens and Studland Bay. However for 189 quid I did find the ADDITIONAL requested 15 quid for a full English or 10 quid for a continental breakfast a little picky, thus I ate none. It seemed to me to be exceptionally tight fisted...hence my 4 star rating. The lunch was to quote Michael Winner ...HISTORIC! I dined on crispy veal tail, deviled sprats, south coast hake with chorizo, a bottle of South African wine all served by a attractive and delightful young french waitress, and whilst I don't wish to appear sexist...I was in serious lust! However the condition was purely in my mind as I'm a middle aged fart who keeps these things to himself! The hotel suggested we take a cab but we managed to pull our 24 inch luggage from the hotel. We cut through the Holiday Inn parking lot. I wouldn't recommend you walking unless you're very mobile. It took us under 15 minutes. We enjoyed the hotel. Very upbeat. We noticed a photo booth on the mezzanine and table tennis. We had a choice of 500 points or food credit $10 per person. I took the food credit as we were going to eat before leaving for the terminal the next morning. Spent about another $12 USD out of pocket. Standard breakfast food options. We also had hotel bar food for dinner the day we checked in after the two fish and chip places suggested by the hotel didn't work out. Ordered: * hubby had chicken wings * I had Mac n cheese balls * BIL had chicken curry * sis had egg rolls We each were given a free cocktail voucher. It was like a fruit punch. Also got local beer. There's a shopping center across the street. It was a Sunday so stores closed early.

It was nicer than I anticipated and felt "cool" and "trendy." Drink were a bit pricy but there are countless options within a short walk.

Be warned that there is a market every Saturday morning, early start. Do not park your car on the High St. Friday night, it will get towed! Overall it is a good place to stay with decent food, a great breakfast and lots of character. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention, it is also one of the most haunted buildings in the UK. Sweet dreams.
