What an awful experience. I just moved into town and needed to find a local Vet. When I arrived at South Main Vet, I was barely greeted by front staff person. When doctor entered room, I found her to be cold and uninterested in what was going on with my dog. Very little engagement, was very off putting. BARELY any communication from doctor once I had gotten my test results back. I had questions that needed answers but was left with zero information, return calls, or messages. How sad that a perfectly great location is being taken up by a vet that really doesn't seem to care, in my opinion. For the record, I tried going to two other vets in area before making appointment at South Main, but they were both about two weeks out. I'm incredibly disheartened to be writing this review. I brought my 13 pound Shih Tzu Poodle in on a Friday to see Dr. Alli, as my dog had shown extreme discomfort in her eye. We couldn't see our normal vet so we decided to go to South Main Vet since we felt our dog needed to be seen as soon possible. Dr. Alli came into our room and spent possibly five minutes examining my dog. She asked me questions, if my dog had been exposed to a foxtail or what might've happened. I explained to her that I wasn't sure that she would have been exposed to a Foxtail as we don't have them in our yard, and that I wasn't sure what had happened to her eye. Dr. Ali said well "let's do a procedure where I drop dye into her eye to see if it's an ulcer/scratch on her eyeball. If the dye sticks to something this will mean it's an ulcer and not a foxtail". Shortly, after taking my dog to the back and doing the small procedure, she came out with her and explained that it was an ulcer and sent us home with a topical medication for her eye. In the span of two days, my dogs eye got severely worse. We could tell that it was infected as green fluid was coming out and by Sunday she could barely open her eye. Sunday evening as we were cleaning her eye gently we found two FoxTails. We were very lucky that both FoxTails rolled to the front of her eye. One was starting to embed itself into her eyelid. We were lucky that we were able to remove both of them. Our dog was misdiagnosed, and this was a huge miss on South Main Vet's part. This could have easily cost us our dog's eye. That evening I left a message for the vet, letting them know what had happened and my concerns. The next morning they called back to check in, and I was very disappointed in their unprofessionalism as they took no responsibility and responded to me with a email proceeding to try and place blame on me as the patient. It is not my job to diagnose what was wrong. I brought my dog to South Main vet seeking their advice and guidance on how to treat my dog and was hugely let down. I have attached their email and the photo of the two Foxtail's found in my dogs eye. I'll let you determine how you would accept a response like this after finding what we found. read more

I took my dog here to get a second opinion, as the last vet heard a heart murmur. The "doctor" came in and did not even introduce herself. She listened to my dog's heart: no murmur. Well, it turns out she did, in fact, have a heart murmur and something called aortic stenosis. Plus, the "doctor's" misdiagnosis of my neighbor's dog almost killed him. After a year of missteps, I found this vet to be detached, careless and unaccountable in her medicine, which increased my dogs suffering instead of easing it. The past: My dog's leg was swelling where he had a mast cell tumor in the past. She suggested we aspirate it, which we did. Only to discover by another vet later that if you are pretty sure its a mast cell tumor, aspirating it will only aggravate and spread the cancer. My dog's leg got more swollen after that. The most recent: My elderly dog, (with mast cell disease) snout was swollen and he developed a chronic cough, sneezing and bloody discharge from his eye. My partner took him in and said that she DID NOT PHYSICALLY EXAMINE my dog and gave a diagnosis of some obscure syndrome on the spot. He was sent home with a pamphlet. That was for 69.00. A week later the symptoms worsened and he was coughing. When we were in for his monthly shot, I asked if the techs could listen to his heart because he was worsening. I was told that they were not permitted but the doctor was, for an extra 30 and that she would "squeeze him in" some other time during the day. Whatever. I declined. My dog continued to decline over the next week, his face swelled more and indicated infection. My partner a took a look mouth and it was bloody. I called the vets office, irate that she did not physically examine my dog and that she misdiagnosed him. He is an immunocompromised, elderly dog with cancer and an infection was dangerous. After a wait on the phone, I was told that she could see him in one week for a "re-check." ?????? I found another vet who could see us sooner, as a first time client. In 5 minutes they confirmed that he had an infection from cancer that had invaded his palate. If she had done an actual physical exam on him we would have known this. She robbed my dog of treatment (at least for comfort and care) and time for us to prepare for his ending. All without any accountability, not even a word. Shenendoah Vet was empathetic, thorough and competent. Go there instead. read more

I'm compelled to share an update after another visit today. My two cats both have allergies on and off once, maybe twice, a year that require a steroid shot. It's always easy as can be to schedule the appointments as they become necessary. Today, we woke up to open wound on one of our cats over a spot where she previously had a small injection site keloid. Of course Google sent us to the literal worst case scenario. Despite being booked full, Dr. Alli asked for a photo and squeezed us in upon receipt. Turns out it's a laceration and she'll get patched up tomorrow. I prepared mentally for a big financial blow. Anytime you start talking antibiotics, anesthesia, etc. I feel like you just add a zero to whatever you think it'll cost. Nope! I am floored how affordable it will be. My family is ever so grateful to have South Main Vet so close to home. read more

They were so kind when they put my dog to sleep. He was in pain and couldn't walk anymore. They couldn't have been more patient, respectful and professional. They gave us time to spend with him in a private room. They got us in within 2 hours of calling, even though they were very busy. Dr. Ally is considerate and an excellent communicator. I've been taking my dog to South Main since they opened. The vet care is good. No complaint there. The 1 star is for the scheduler. My dog had 1 month before her heart worm medication needed to be renewed. I scheduled her for a heart worm test as I always do. We get the test done June 24, it's negative, I then proceed to order HeartGuard from PetMeds. A few days later, I get a message from PetMeds that the vet didn't authorize it and to contact vet. Called South Main. Front desk girl said it's because my dog didn't have her annual exam. I said why didn't you schedule that with the heart worm test then? Obviously that's why we came?!? How would I know your protocol???? And btw, her last exam was August. It's only July... I then schedule an exam which is booked out to the end of the month but need this months dose so she doesn't lapse and is required another test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The vet approves it. I reorder the 1 dose through PetMeds. Just now got another message that the vet didn't approve it. I could've saved myself the headache and gone to tractor supply when they have PetVet clinic and got it all done at one time. Next time I will!! Meanwhile I'm left hanging. Would be nice if this vet's scheduler would apply their protocol whenever any type of appointment or test is scheduled so we can avoid this unnecessary expense ordering and paying shipping on straggler doses, on top of the time it takes to see the vet. Today I personal went down to the location in Sutter Creek to ask if they had made an error of what I was charge for Fortiflora. I was charged $42.83 for only 14 packets. For sure an error was made when you can get 30 Packets for $30.99 from Petco, Chewy and Amazon without Any discount or membership. Yes, my cat was sick and yes they got her in that same morning. That being said, I feel that it was Extremely over priced by the vet. I had no idea that 30 packets for $30.99 was the Normal price VS 14 packets for $42.83. My vet bill that day was $535.56. Recently moved to this vet due to hearing good things and am shocked anyone would think this rate this vet and her super rude staff high. Doctor didn't fix one of our dog's foot issues - still bleeding and infected (spent 3 mins with him) and wouldn't help us get our other dog approved for his therapy training, even though she's officially his vet. I would highly recommend SMVH. Actually, I have sent other pet owners here and they too have had a great experience. Dr Alli Duff and staff are top notch. I have been to the location several times. The building is clean and well laid out, providing enough safe space in the waiting room for cats/dogs. The staff is professional, experienced, compassionate, and friendly. I have 2 cats and we've met with Dr Alli on several occasions. She and her staff are extremely thorough and efficient, providing loving care to my four-legged family members (Oscar and Finley). Dr Alli's care plans are well thought out having NEVER pushed any unnecessary tests or treatments. As someone who works in healthcare, my care teams do patient follow-up calls/texts post procedure(s) as its just good medicine. This is also a standard of care they provide at SMVH. After a horrendous experience with an 'emergency vet' the night before that cost us over $1000 for no answers just antibiotics, this vet did a phenomenal job caring for my dog. I drove by this old building on Main Street in Sutter Creek and noticed there was a new vet office. So when my cat needed veterinary care and I couldn't get through to my usual office in Jackson, I gave this one a shot. The receptionist is very efficient at picking up and returning calls, and she also has a warm and welcoming demeanor. She got me in the same day I called due to a cancellation. I brought my cat in and he was nervous but quickly settled in. The staff was kind, friendly, and attentive to his needs. Their rates are reasonable and within the ballpark I was estimating the visit would cost. Furthermore, the office followed up by text message a couple days later asking how he was doing after our visit! This place goes above and beyond my expectations. I will be returning to South Main Vet from now on and I recommend their services. read more

They need to be more compassionate and offer emergency office visits. I had a problem with my cat needing to be euthanized and my appointment wasn't until 3:00. I didn't want my cat to suffer, she got progressively worse. I called and advised them, asked to bring her in earlier and they said they couldn't. I have been to this office several times and they never seemed crazy busy. How hard is it to give a shot and put them to sleep? Well, it isn't and I am sure other clients would have understood an emergency. Dr Ali isn't always warm and fuzzy and isn't hands on enough, it's wrong especially because their office visits are over $60.My cat ended up dying at home, devastating! Update to a prior post. 3 weeks now and I can't get the test results from my dog and the receptionist just popped off at me for asking her to please let the Dr know I am not happy and want a call with my dogs results. This place is just awful and I wanted to like a small business downtown but I give up on them. Bad enough the service stinks then to be scolded by a receptionist? And I have 4 dogs I am a customer that gives my vets lots of money. We only tried this business because Jackson creek vet is so backed up by I'll wait for Dr Stacy in Jackson rather than this joke of a business. Final update. Vet sends us an e mail with blood results stating great news his blood work looks great. After pulling teeth to speak to the vet our concern was the tumor, my wife gets the vet on the phone who basically said oh yeah the tumor, that's on his liver and it's going to kill him. Somehow they didn't think that was something we should know? And she had the gall to tell my wife she's not happy with me for calling her receptionist a bitch. Well when she scoffs at you and poo poos your concern what does she expect? I can't imagine what vet sends you an e mail stating " great news" your dogs blood work looks great then when confronted says oh yeah he's gonna die. Total incompetence from our first visit when she just looked at our dogs for a first check up and did nothing more than take their temperatures.
