I give this a solid 3.8, buoyed largely by the gorgeous setting. You're golfing on the edge of a mountain. The carts, staff friendliness, amenities, and everything else is a 3. I think they struggle to keep the greens nice because the water just rolls down the mountain; 6 to 7 of them were really hard to play because of the patchiness and whatnot. Still can't complain... South Mountain used to feel solid every round. You got smooth greens, clean fairways, and a course that felt worth the price. You do not get that now. The greens sit bumpy and slow. Some have bare spots. Putts skip. The course looks tired. You expect better from a place with this history. The layout is still strong, but the conditions drag the whole experience down. You leave disappointed. South Mountain needs to fix the greens and bring back the standard it once had. read more

So poorly run I dont know where to start. I will list random things in no order that occur regularly. 1. No carts available because the cart guy isnt up to the task-meaning theres a traffic jam of scattered carts in the area where you're supposed to leave your cart. 2. Range is closed or no ball left. They close there range for the junior clinic just because. They also routinely run out of balls. 3. They have no system for having golfers tee off at the correct time aka their tee times. Golfers just drive down there and tee off anytime they want within 10 or 15 minutes of their time. In fact the staff in the pro shop encourages this chaos. 4. Burnt out or no grass areas. Oh yeah grass would be nice but no we are choosing to do nothing about replenishing it there there over there and there too. 5. Yeah we couldn't fix those sprinklers probably should have outsourced a team to fix them because we just ruined the range and other areas for 2 months. 6. Doing nothing about improving anything because we are in Draper we should be a well run outfit with course conditions that are on par with other great city courses. Stonebridge conditions puts this course to shame so many courses do. 7. Whats the excuse? 8. Why are other city courses better run and in so much better condition than South Mountain? Why do so many experienced golfers call this place a Dog Track? Because it is and there's nothing being done about it anytime soon even though its in Draper Utah where all things are nice (except South Mountain Golf Course) read more

the maintenance guy (brant) was following my group and turning the sprinklers on as we would walk up to the green and then would watch us get soaking wet. then as we're walking off the green he would turn the sprinklers off. he would haul A** across the tee boxes in his sxs as we were all in the tee boxes. i've heard this dude is a pile of sh** but he just proved to us he is. not sure how he has a job still. read more

South Mountain is a Utah gem. The course embraces its mountain location in a phenomenal way. It's tough but not punishing, quirky without being too crazy, and is playable again and again. If you love flat fairways, this course is not for you. The architecture is some of the best in the state. Rolling, holly fairways chase into guarded multi-tier greens. Landing zones from the tee are well developed: if you take the right club, they're forgiving enough to leave you a decent approach. Most fairways are generous enough for driver, but then they narrow around the green, exactly what a mountain course should do. The greens really test you. Find yourself on the wrong tier and par is a great score. Strategic putting is often a thing to prevent disaster. Hole location can change the character of a hole completely. Add all that great gold to some fantastic views and you have a great course. A beginner, playing smart, can manage this course without losing balls. But advanced players also need to be smart. Beautiful place if you want a wedding. The staff was friendly and were fully involved at first when planning the wedding. The rep who assisted in the planning became more and more distant as the date came closer. The final payments were to be submitted 10 days before the ceremony but we were not able to get a hold of the coordinator until 4 days before the wedding! This made scheduling the set-up harrowing on our end. The pricing was resonable about $800 for a 4 hour event plus $2400 in food costs. they have a full service kitchen and a great array of entrees and apps. For service I give this Place 3 Stars. but the view and service of the day of made this a 4 star rating in my book. All in all everything went without a hitch. read more

I won't be returning. Extremely poor and lazy customer service, not to mention maintenance is clearly lacking. I showed up at 8:30PM (a half hour before closing) to hit a bucket of balls and watch the sunset while it was cooling down. They had already put the carts in the bay and shut down. I asked the guy at the front desk about it and he said "You should get here before 8:30". I replied "I can hit a bucket of balls in 5 minutes". He simply began walking me out the door. Baffled by his laziness I went out to the green to practice chipping and putting. The green was missing grass and was really dry (brown) where there was grass. Then within two minutes another employee came out and gathered all the flags and took them inside. What the? Great customer service... I won't be going back. read more

Worst course in the state of Utah? Possibly. The layout is fine, very gimmicky. I played this morning (understanding it is mid march and courses are not in tip top shape). We were the first group out. Every bunker we saw, and were in, seemed to have not been raked this year. I ended up in 2 of them, each time I was in somebody else's crater, which actually wasn't the worst part. The bad part was the sand seemed to have been dumped in and never touched. The second you step in a bunker your feet shouldn't disappear, it was ridiculous. The greens clearly hadn't been cut or rolled this year, the fairways were mowed only in places that were easy access to mow. God forbid they take out the 150 stakes to mow the 10 foot strip of 4 inch long grass. The tee boxes were damn near rough. I understand you can't be perfect this time of year, but don't charge full price when your course is in shit shape and not taken care of. read more

In my opinion, South Mountain is the best public course in Salt Lake County. It is a difficult trek, not for beginning golfers. The views are terrific, and the course is well maintained. I like the layout of this course and had fun for the first nine holes and my group was the first out. Unfortunately a tournament started on the tenth hole while we were all of the sudden behind four groups and no one told us of a tournament going on. When we went to the clubhouse and complained about the 4+ groups in front of us the club employee said so? Really? We did get a partial credit and that's fine and great full but for their staff to NOT be apologetic and not give a you know what I was kind of turned off. read more

A word about the par number, the rating number and the slope number. All of them help golfers rate the difficulty of a course. The par is the most familiar. It's simply the number of perfect shots it takes to get to the green from the tee plus two putts. Par is the same for a 190 yard par three to a tiny island green or a 100 yard hole with a mammoth green. The rating is changed slightly. The easiest way to understand it is that it's the number of strokes a professional golfer would take to play the hole. The slope is the most interesting. Generally speaking, it's the number of strokes the United States Golf Association thinks their average golfer would take to play all 18 holes. Slope gives us normal golfers an idea of what we're up against on any given course. Average slope is 115. The slope for South Mountain is 130. It's hard. Many of the holes require a long carry to get from tee to fairway. There's a lot of elevation changes. It's got beautiful views and it's fun to play if you're good enough. read more

Held my son's wedding luncheon in February after wedding at the Draper Temple less than a minute down the road. The clubhouse has windows that overlook the whole valley with 3 temples in view. The food and service was awesome, had many comments from my guest what a great choice I made and the best food they hav had at a wedding. They will customize your wedding colors and even provided gluten free items for my husband. I will be highly recommending. Looks like a great venue for a reception as well. read more

I have played this course many times and have played courses around the country for the past 30 years. I enjoy the layout and the challenge this course provides. But.... honestly, this course is in the absolute worst shape of any course I have ever played. The fairways and greens are pitiful. Huge gaps in grass. I do not know if they had a disease take over, but it is awful. I only played the front 9 and that was enough. I would not spend a dime to play this course until they get it in better shape.
