I have a meeting in the Loop today so I'm headed to the city on the express train which has very few stops. Not all of the trains are express only the ones during rush hour. You can purchase a monthly pass or round trip ticket. Since I do most of my work from home, I buy tickets as needed. My tickets today total a little under $7.50 round trip. For a comfortable and relaxing ride, hit the rail to the Loop!

Now I save about $200 per month in gas just by taking the bus to the train station to get back and forth from work! I don't have to worry about keeping my eyes on the road or parking fees in Chicago anymore! I love it and the buses that come to The Mansards are NEW and really clean. The bus drivers, both early morning and evening, are nice and professional! I am so glad the bus line started providing transportation to my apartment complex--now I have more time to review e-mails on my phone and be better prepared when I get to work instead of frazzled by the commute!

Tickets can be purchased using cash or credit card- buy your before you board the train and spare yourself the $5 fee. You may purchase a one way, 10 ride , or weekend pass (for unlimited rides Saturday and Sunday) which is perfect for a busy weekend in Chicago! Students and Seniors can get half price tickets which you can purchase from the conductor or get several when you are at the downtown station. During rush hour, there are zone trains which makes the trip about 40 minutes downtown. Cheaper than driving and parking and VERY convenient!

When there's a White Sox game this station is jam packed. As for the flip side, if there's not a game it's pretty quiet around here. There's also other ways to get to the stadium, but this is the most convenient and fastest usually. Among the things going on around here, there's nothing that tops a White Sox game. It serves the Red Line. The station is located in the middle of the Dan Ryan Expressway, so it's noisy. A benefit from being outdoors is the fresh air. There's not a bad smell. It's a pretty long station, stretching between 33rd and 35th so you have to give yourself plenty of time to get in and out. This is a much better way of getting to a game instead of using gas and paying outrageous parking prices, so you have more money for outrageous concession prices. Getting to the White Sox games is convenient from here. It's among a few public transportation options, along with the L station on the Green Line, and Metra. These plentiful choices means it's usually not a long wait for trains.

The park is relatively brand new looking on a 35 ft hill over looking six tracks in the observation area. There is wide ramps for disabled people to get up there with a covered roof and plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the action. There is a caboose and a crossing gate to build the rail theme of the park. Ample parking across the street for $1.25, park and when you leave deposit the money, even if it's one hour or five hours. You will see Amtrak trains, Metra trains and freight trains. One thing that I didn't like was the genius who put the info boards on the track side on the top of the railing which will limit the camera and video shots because they will block them, hey put them on the back side and get them off the viewing side. I actually moved to the Metra station which has better un obstructed views and more trackage in eye shot. Overall it's a nice idea for the train nerds but they obviously didn't consult train nerds who take pictures or videos which is what most of us do so the Metra station is the better option.

This station on the Metra Electric line is a bit dated but it is still one of the better stations…read moreat this end of the line. It is usually clean and it's convenient to the Olympia Fields Post Office, Olympia Fields Country Club, as well as several subdivisions. If you're a member of the country club, there's access to the club directly from the station; you can park on the club grounds instead of the Metra lot. This stop is perfect if you're staying downtown and you want to attend one of the many golf functions at the club without the hassle of driving. The parking lot is a decent size and it has more than one entrance/exit which helps the flow of traffic. As of this writing, parking is $1.25 paid at old fashioned pay boxes where you have to fold a dollar three times over to squeeze out into the narrow slot. There are no monthly passes available for parking. There are no ticket machines at this location either so you'll need to buy your ticket on the train. Once this station is remodeled to include some of the amenities available at other stations it will be the jewel of the south suburbs.

The Carroll Avenue Station on the South Shore Line is the quintessential small-town train stop. I…read morewould call it a station, and it technically is, but you hardly realize it when you're here. Everything about the station makes you think it's 1936. There's the tiny building filled with uncomfortable chairs. There's the ticket agent who's neither friendly nor rude. There are the tearful reunions at the tracks. OK, I made that last one up, but tearful reunions in the muddy parking lot doesn't sound right. One time when I was visiting South Bend, the train schedule worked out (or didn't work out) so that I wouldn't be able to get all the way to South Bend in time to spend time with my dear friend Jen W. So she very generously offered to meet me in Michigan City. This was when Indiana still didn't have Daylight Saving Time (and it was confusing because the state has two time zones, and one of them does change), and because my friend lived in Granger, she got here an hour early. Our reunion was grand, and teary on her end. We were so engrossed in our conversation that we didn't realize she had made a wrong turn on the way back to South Bend. I really like this station, especially because it reminds me of Jen W. and our Michiana misadventures. OK, they weren't misadventures, but alliteration is fun when you're in the Midwest. Oh, and for you geography buffs, Michigan City, Indiana, is not in the region known as Michiana. How ridiculous is that? About as ridiculous as East Chicago being in Indiana, I would say.
