Let me preface this with having contemplated quitting before I even began. I signed up for a women's beginner skate class, with my impending 40th birthday on my heels. I pulled into the parking lot, with an alarming number of vanity plates, thinking I must be at a realtor convention. Nope. I was met with a bustling rink of derby practice as I checked in and made my way to a bench to pad-up. The derby practice took place next to us beginner fish. It is a sight to see, but I remained focused and somehow made it through. Sarah is the beginner's instructor, and I'll be honest -she kicked our collective butts on day one. She has pushed me to try techniques and tricks that I would never have thought possible with what little skill I walked in with -barely being able to stand and way too out of shape to consider strapping myself in skates. I will say that I left on day two having attained so much confidence that I am now comfortable going to a rink solo. It IS a commitment, being 4 (1 hour) classes for 4 weeks, but if you are on the fence then "Do it Lady"! I give it a resounding 5 stars. Wtg, Sarah! I remember looking into it and it just being an inconvenience because of distance and amount of dedication required. Glad I looked into it again, just a skip and a hop away. I don't know if there is another sport out there that is this entertaining and confusing at the same time. It's definitely a growing sport and has found it was into pop culture, with jokes made on "King of the Hill" about how no one understands the rules and an awesome movie with "Whip It," by Drew Barrymore. There is also a Derby in Houston that is older and more established, but this league has something they don't have in Houston or at about 90% of the other Derbies around the country, a banked track. Which this is the way Derby was meant to be played. There are only 8 in the US, so unless you feel like making the trek to Austin, you need to check this place out. They have now added Jr. Derby, for ages 7-17, and a Men's derby, both I'm sure not quite as inappropriately dressed. They have bleachers as well so you don't miss anything, unless you have the bad luck of sitting on the bottom of the yellow section behind the bank. The seats are usually left till last because they're the worse seats in the house, you pretty much don't see anything. My main complaint about the bleachers is that whoever made them did not take normal human proportions into account, I believe they made them with the idea that only basketball players would be in attendance. Most people put their feet on the seats in front of them because it's really uncomfortable to do otherwise. Some regular fans refuse to acknowledge that they are doing this and take up two rows at a time and refuse to move, making for a lot less seating. You can bring a chair and sit in the middle if you get there early while there is still room. The bouts are really entertaining. I have not been able to decide if it would be better if you knew the rules or not. Some people that work there don't even know things for sure. We asked several workers how many periods or whatever there were, we got "um 2?," "I think 3" and "don't know 3 or 4." So if you're a newbie and don't get it, don't worry I'm not sure anyone does completely. Sometimes the ref arguments last pretty long, because there is all sorts of penalties and such. The House of Derby has Cici's selling pizza, beer and liquor and massages, for some reason. I guess if the game gets you all worked up. Bands play at half time or in between games, depending on the schedule. The bathrooms and the air-conditioning leaves you wanting. Think of what you would expect from Houston older music venues, i.e. Numbers or Fitzgerald's, or your neighborhood dive bar. That's why they just can't get 5 stars, because with the bleachers, air-conditioning and bathrooms, sometimes it's just plain uncomfortable. The ticket prices are $8 on pre-purchase and $10 at the door. My favorite past time while attending the derby is everyone discussing possible derby names. Most of the girls have amusing names, but it's just as fun to come up with some of your own. My would be "Callie Killa," with gold skates and a laurel wreath on my helmet, for my favorite vicious Caesar, Caligula! Nerding it up! read more

I can wax poetic about SSRD and the kickass ladies that make it up. I signed up for a boot camp back in August and have been going ever since. I started with zero experience on roller skates and I can proudly say that's no longer the case. There really isn't as fun a workout as a roller derby workout and SSRD's will have you melting away in no time.
