Ask the Community - South Spokane YMCA

Is there a steam room here?

There is a small dry sauna in the men's locker room that can fit 2-3 people. It is notorious for never getting hot enough however.

But I have *never* encountered anyone with Stephen Lay's blend of knowledge (anatomy, exercises), ability to motivate and inspire, human psychology acumen, etc. Working with him has vastly improved my life, and re-opened doors I thought were closed for good. To take one of several examples, Stephen's analysis of problems in my lower back and R big toe, which had led a couple MDs to advise me not do long runs anymore, and the exercises Stephen proposed to correct them, helped me get back to running in just a couple weeks. Stephen keeps up with the latest in exercise techniques and sports medicine, so you know his information is up-to-the-minute; for those who are into the minutiae, he can recommend great books, articles and web resources to dig deeper. He also knows how to tailor his workouts to every age group, so as to join forces with (rather than wrestle against) Father Time. Plus he is a master massage therapist, so you can warm down after a workout in his capable hands -- or substitute an hour of pure bliss on the massage table, on those days when your body isn't quite up to a workout. In short: Highest possible marks to his Wise Works Fitness and its leader Stephen Lay, as a consummate sports professional, but also as a uniquely fine person, who continues to expand my mind and enrich my life on many levels.

He has been perfect for me because he has built up my body strength. He has been very sensitive to not overworking me, partly because I still think I am in my 30s or 40s and can hit it hard, which he recognized I shouldn't and can't. He is also a very good communicator and teacher (about various muscles and such). I was positively surprised with the quality of his gym and the variety of exercises he runs me through. I actually look forward to working out. Plus, he has provided me the discipline and motivation to keep at it.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!…read more This review won't even do it justice to express how much I love coming to Catalyst Fitness. Part of me doesn't even want to write this review because I don't want let the secret out, but I'd be doing Spokanites a disservice if I didn't. I've done spin classes, step classes, barre classes, crossfit, etc., and nothing has fit me better than Catalyst's small group training class. The max amount of people is 8, so it fits my comfort zone, perfectly. I get that 1:1 attention from the trainer without having to go to personal training. However, I mix that in, too. Last year, I let myself go, and I needed a place to get me back on track. THIS is that place! The icing on the cake is that Matt, and the other trainers are so welcoming and friendly. Plus, they give me free chilled water and towels, and I can use their cardio equipment anytime. WIN! If you're tired of big workout classes, but still want that 1:1 attention from a trainer - this is the class for you. I am SO glad that I took that first step to get a consultation. They've changed my life for the better, and I hope (from this review) others take advantage of that. You're really missing out if you don't.

Since starting with Donnie, I've been redefining my relationship with health and fitness & he has played a huge role in that. I've always played sports at a high-level since elementary, and became entirely burned out after playing varsity basketball all four years of high school & travel ball. After graduating, I hated playing and refused to go to the gym since I no longer "required" to go. Since 2011, I've had my short spurts of working out, but nothing stuck because I still despised working out. It wasn't fun. About 3 months ago, I was the heaviest I've ever been at 165 pounds (was consistently 130 pounds prior). That's when I contacted Donnie with my goal of dropping to 145 & overall just wanting to feel better. Fast forward to now: my association with fitness has become immensely more positive (joined a gym to play basketball, am learning to breakdance, look forward to group fitness classes, and am generally more active on a day-to-day basis), my strength has increased & gained muscle, I have a better idea of nutrition goals, and have lost about 5 pounds. I'm looking forward to seeing my results by the end of 2021 & am motivated to make these changes a new lifestyle, while continuing to have fun learning new fitness styles and physical activities!

We all have different goals, yet he's super patient, positive, and effective with each of us. (For example, I didn't want to take comparison photos or do regular weigh ins because of my own psych needs, and he's been totally supportive of that.) All the trainees are also super supportive of each other. It's only gotten better since his rebrand as Torq and relocation to 1420 E Sprague. Donnie and this community are one of my favorite parts of my new life here. What to expect: small group training of 2-6 people, a cool app that helps you track your nutrition and fitness goals, and a trainer who's always on your side. And maybe if you're lucky some boxing circuits!
