I'm a local to Emerald Isle and I originally avoided this place because friends told me to stay away and now I see why for starters I walked in and was greeted by a nice lady that I'd give a 6/10 on knowledge of items and inventory, anyways I asked for wax and she showed me where it was so I bought it for 6$ cash which was pretty high but I needed it. I was also looking for board grips but they didn't have any so she recommended another shop I had never visited so I drive down the island to HOT WAX and am greeted by an extremely nice lady who lets me bring my board in and recommends many things I needed, when I got everything I needed I noticed the same wax I had just paid 6$ for was only 2$!! So like any other customer I bought the cheaper wax and went back to south swell to return the unopened wax, I walk in and what seemed like the owner or manager was at the counter, when I asked he sat and thought for a minute and then said no (I'm assuming because they were counting out the drawer, but it wasn't closing time) I then told him I had just paid cash like 10 minutes ago and I had found the equivalent wax way cheaper he then tells me that they won't take my return and the reason it's expensive is because they are the only shop that carries it (he is practically saying they are price gauging) also the first time I had gone in I had noticed the boards were priced very high, anyways I would not recommend this spot to any surfers, local or tourist, it's inhospitable and not how a surf shop is supposed to be on the other hand HOT WAX is the ideal surf shop with great prices people and items that actually are in stock. read more

I went in to South Swell, not knowing a thing about skim boards. They were very happy to help me and make sure I got the right board for my size and even included a free pack of wax. The guys in there are super nice and chill, and I plan on going back. read more

Parker is an excellent instructor and watched for the best day/time for them to learn. He taught them about the ocean and how and where waves break as well. If this store tells you to sign a blank credit card receipt and that they'll "run it later with the correct amount," RUN! And take the blank receipt with you! A friend had this happen - except he didn't purchase anything, because it sounded shady. The store charged his credit card and did so without his signature. The only surf shop I've been to so far that reminded me of home. It's a nice little place that has pretty much all you need in a small town. You'll find some used boards, SUP's, skate boards and yes new boards as well. I felt like I was back at local surf shop until I walked out and realized I was still in North Carolina. Pathetic. Worst experience ever in a surf shop... I walk in and the guy is on the phone... And nobody else in the shop. Understandable. (even though we walked right past him and he didn't greet us or even acknowledge us). We walked around for a minute and I wanted to buy a spring suit which was located behind a rope with the surf boards... So I politely interrupted him to ask if I can browse the wetsuits. He told me I could, halfway expecting him to excuse himself from the phone call to come and assist. When that didn't happen I asked 'do I let the rope down?' He rudely replied' u can go UNDER the rope..' now I'm pretty pissed off. But I did find a wetsuit I liked with no price tag... So I patiently waited for him to finish his phone call... In the mean time checking out the surf boards and among other things. By this time we had been in the store (and he on the phone) for ten minutes! I had finally had enough and walked out only for him to look up for a split second and say'you guys have a nice day'! Wow. I am a very happy guy and it takes a lot to make me mad but this really did... That is not the way to run a business.. I have never written a review but felt people should be warned before they get treated the way my wife and I were!
