Two times today my husband had to chase after the umbrellas that were not attended to and not collapsed on the beach. My kids were by the water both times and the umbrellas flew towards the ocean and almost ran directly into them. There is no situation where this is acceptable. Leaving equipment unattended to and not collapsed on the beach is unsafe and neglectful. I called the number on the umbrella and the girl that answered provided excuses about having all of their employees working to remove umbrellas. This is also an unacceptable excuse. If you are unable to ensure that your equipment is safe to the beach goers around you then you should not be allowed to have them on the beach. My husband got both umbrellas from the ocean and I removed them from the sand to prevent a recurrent event as we sit here at 6:21 pm still with the chairs and umbrellas unattended. read more

Warren was great! Cant remember the other guys name but the guy with short black hair that is super sarcastic was funny. The day I went, the waves were a bit rough but I felt like the staff was knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable. I learned a lot in the short time that I had my lesson for. Second year in a row renting bikes on vacation from Tony's. Equipment is fine. Prices are reasonable and customer service was pleasant.

Tony, his manager Gus, and instructor Scott have been amazing to work with! We have been surfing with them for over a year now. Our 8 year old son attends their summer surf camp and my son and I also take private surf lessons. Everyone is so friendly, has a great time in the water, and is also super safe- always watching out for the kids and helping them get back over the break. The instructors are very knowledgeable and have been surfing for a long time. (even the young ones). They don't just send you out on a wave. They really spend the time teaching you how to read the waves, when to paddle, when to drop in, the stance, when and how to turn, and so much more. They have happily worked with our schedule when we have had other commitments come up (we live out of state), and have always had a great attitude about it. I came to Kure Beach just to get away for a few days. I came to the area driving my sedan. So I did not have much beach equipment with me. I was so happy to see a lot of advertisements in the area saying that beach equipment could be rented from the surf school. During my stay, I stayed at the South Wind Motel but even had a magnet on the refrigerator advertising rental equipment from this business. So I called up this place on a Tuesday morning. Within an hour they delivered a bicycle, helmet, and basket to me onsite at the motel where I was staying. I was able to rent the bike and equipment for 24 hours at $20 a day. Then, the icing on the cake was the fact that I did not have to worry about returning the equipment to them, as they came back the very next day to pick up the equipment from me. I did not even have to be available onsite. I just received a call stating that they were coming to pick up the bike. And they took care of the rest! read more

Can't say enough about how great these folks are! We had 2 sons, 10 & 11, take a 1-hour surf lesson on Aug 1st. It was BEYOND AWESOME for both of them! To start with, they immediately answered the phone and were able to book a same-day appointment. Super easy process (they take credit cards) with a simple waiver form. Our 11 yr-old had never surfed (only body boarding on vacations) and was standing up after only 10 minutes! Instructor Morgan (female) was amazing with him, patient & like an instant best-buddy, she instilled confidence in him right away. Our 10 yr-old had done a week of surf & science camp at UNCW & I just wanted someone out there in the water with him. Travis was fantastic & even helped him learn more technique in that short hour! As an overprotective parent, I worry about my kids being out that far (they have to be out a little over their heads to catch any wave) and also for shark awareness as well as general awareness of safety with a big surf board at their command! Having someone out there with them displaces all of these worries, additionally it's good to know that surf companies like this all pay attention to weather reports and sky-copter reports, plus these instructors know what to look for (even the young ones, trust me, they do know what they are doing) to keep our kids safe. As with ANY sport, there are always risks and the key is to mitigate that risk as best you can. I saw other kids out there who just were not ready to be 'alone' and they couldn't control the board the way they should and also would have had no clue what to do in a dangerous situation. When we go back, I'll be booking a 'buddy' to hang with my boys and let them continue to learn! read more

I was staying in Carolina Beach between the first and last part of a two-week business trip, and looking to break out of business mode and into beach mode beyond just walking and hanging out on the beach. I'm not a surfer, but I've enjoyed stand up paddleboarding in California and Florida, and my great Airbnb host, Frances Shotwell, recommended Tony, whose brochure was in the apartment. What a great recommendation that was! Tony is a genuinely friendly, chill guy who is apparently a world-class surfer but doesn't hesitate to help beginners feel comfortable on the water. He showed up early at the appointed spot for my rental on the Intracoastal Waterway, and got me on the water with some helpful tips, since it had been a while, and off I paddled toward Gibby's Dock & Dine cafe, which he'd told me about on the phone. It was at the end of that part of the Intracoastal, and with a strong south wind it blowing in my face, I worked up an appetite. I had a four-hour rental so had plenty of time some coffee and breakfast. I pulled my board right up on the dock, the way Tony had suggested, and enjoyed a yummy and relaxing breakfast while watching the board from the outdoor seating. The way back was a breeze, with the wind at my back. I got back a little early, and called Tony from my (hidden) phone. His girlfriend came and got the board, since he was teaching someone from Puerto Rico how to surf. I wouldn't have minded waiting on the little Intracoastal beach but it was nice to get on with the rest of my day. My stepson who is 17 and has autism was very fearful of the waves on his first day of surfing lessons. He made it just 30 minutes out of a two hour lesson. Tony the owner, called me that night offering to credit our account and offered to try it with my stepson again in smaller time-frames on more calm days. He totally got it, that small successes are important. Autism is a hard thing to have because of the anxiety over the unknown. Tony was so accommodating and cool about the whole thing. Rented 2- 2 person kayaks and a surf board for our week's vacation in Carolina Beach. I was able to reach the business easily by phone before we left home to make reservations. Equipment was delivered promptly as promised. Paid $500 for the week for all the equipment. A little less than half way through the week, we realized we probably wouldn't use one of the kayaks so much so I called to see if I could get a prorated rate and return one kayak. I had to wait for the next day for a response and had to call them back- clerk told me she wasn't able to reach me on my mobile number with 3 attempts ( service was just fine as far as I was concerned) and I was told no one had ever asked to do that and there was a $20 delivery/pick up charge though they refused to take the equipment back early because it was already allocated. Was REALLY DISAPPOINTED in the business not working with me in what I felt was not an unusual request. Even offered to have them deduct the $20 delivery/pick up charge from the rental /prorated rate if they agreed. Though that request was denied too. Won't use this business again and would warn others to think about what you will really use during the week and what you may not need. Customer service I felt was somewhat lacking. read more

Called down about a week ahead to order our chairs & umbrella service for the beach. Tony couldn't have been nicer! Took care of the reservation, explained where to look upon arrival when we got to the beach & he was spot on! Our chairs & umbrella were on the beach w our name tagged to them. Was perfect!! One day there was an issue with our set up being next to another umbrella/chair set where there were the upwards of 25 people gathering at any time. Flagged down one of the guys with Tony's service and they immediately moved us to a new fantastic spot where we felt comfortable. Will definitely use them again!!! My daughter took a surf lesson with Nik and loved it! She was able to get up on the board and ride several waves during her class. Nik also showed her how to look for crabs and sea horses in the sea weed which of course we spent part of our time afterwards doing. The next day we rented a board and umbrella from them and received excellent customer service. We were also able to use the $5 coupon we received at the original surf lesson. My daughter and her 3 cousins, ages 9-14, took 1-hour private lessons two days in a row. The kids were all able to get several good rides in, and even the next day, with high winds, they had some success and a lot of fun. We were very impressed with the professionalism, safety precautions, and friendliness of the staff, including Tony himself. We saw even younger kids having fun as well as adults. Really thankful for the experience--highlight of our beach trip. Also, if you're worried about surfing's reputation as a "white boy" sport, our family is multiracial and the staff was diverse and couldn't have been friendlier to everyone. read more
