I met Sean in Wrightsville beach while waiting on another small business owner to meet with me. He…read more, and one of his instructors with him, were extremely nice and informative. Very easy to engage with, receptive and patient. I observed first hand him working with the several various aged children. Making sure they had proper sizing of boards, educating on the surf and methods of maneuvering the board. They took time to answer all sorts of questions from the children. Including from us parents. After the children hit the water with them, I was speaking with the parents waiting and they shared how much their children loved the lessons and the instructors. When the kids came back, they were exhausted in a good way! Happy and of course starving lol I find this to be effective approach for learning the sport for those esp that may get overwhelmed or overstimulated by larger number of people in the group. But also if your child tried a camp and found they loved surfing this is great option to also feed their desire to keep learning and refining their surf skills.

I cannot imagine it going any better. My first run, I did on my knees. Next, I was standing up. I ended up coming in and watching my family. My kids were standing up and looking so comfortable on the board. This was an amazing adventure - the small class size of 2 people to 1 instructor is dead on perfect! Check this out and have fun!

There is nothing better to be in a resort town during off season. This month, I spent a week in…read moreSurf City, North Carolina. This time of year the town is fairly quiet, especially during the week. Parking was free for off season (saving us $30/day downtown). There was no wait at the restaurants (who were also running specials to attract customers). Surf City is near the center of Topsail Island. The beach side borders the Atlantic Ocean and the west side is bordered by inner coastal waterway. A large bridge connects the mainland to Surf City. The Island has an interesting history. From 1946-48, the Island was used by the US government to test missile trajectory. Abandoned observation towers are scattered across the island. The Island was devastated by Hurricane Fran in 1996. Today, draws to the island include fishing, surfing, kayaking, boating, biking, swimming, beach combing, visiting the parks, small aquarium or numerous shops. We started our vacation with a trip to the Visitors Center to get the low down and a map. The Surf City Pier is a must see. For $1, a visitor can walk out on the pier and watch the locals fish and take in the views. We enjoyed spending time on the beach. We had several days that were warm enough to swim, but we enjoyed just walking for miles up and down Topsail Island. We also enjoyed Southside Park with boardwalks over the marsh and fabulous views of the bridge connecting to the mainland. Everyday, we visited the Seafood Market. The fresh seafood was unbelievably good and some was local. As for restaurants, we found donuts, bagels, seafood, tacos, hotdogs, Mediterranean food and breakfast options. People are friendly. I highly recommend. I'll be back.

But we found plenty of restaurants, a few gift shops, the grocery store, and more. Enough to keep us fed and entertained. The pier is open during the day. There are a few parks. In summer you can go to the turtle rescue center, and I think there's a museum. There's a long history in the area, from natives and pirates to WW2 training to post-war missile testing. The roundabout is pretty much the center of the business/entertainment district, with shops and restaurants. Several ice cream and candy places. Houses spread out from there, north and south. Explore and enjoy. Off-season there is still a little traffic, probably crowded in summer so drive carefully.

If i were in San Diego or pulling into Haleiwa it's understandable...but Surf City? North Carolina? I was near insanity, but too close to the shop to turn around. With the infuriating anger building I decided they had one chance to get my business. And it was slim. And what happened? Great, comfortable, friendly customer service. No pressure sales. Two days later and I'm back ordering a board from them. It's a nice little shop with pretty much everything you would need. Be sure to check out the consignment section...saw a cosmetically beat but great condition Hawaii Pro Designs longboard sitting in the back, in addition to a variety of short boards in varying conditions with varying prices. George is awesome. Send him your business. I've stopped into most other "shops" in the area and been brushed off, leaving me feeling like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (minus the prostitution). Lesson to other shops in the area...don't judge a book by its cover - you just missed out on $2k in sales this time around (not to mention future business), as I'll never go back to your establishments.
