The market is large and offers just about everything a grocery store could carry, including both indoor and outdoor machines for refills on spring water (a must on the island, particularly if you make your own coffee). Most impressive is the staff in the meat and fish department. They men and women working there always seem willing to answer questions about stock and are even happy to offer advice about preparing the day's fresh seafood. We've also been pleased with the entire staff. They're available and can point you to the right aisle when you're in a rush. The store can get busy, and when only a couple of checkout lines are open there's sometimes a good wait, but remember this is island time.

Record the amounts on the clipboard. Add it up on their calculator. Pay by cash or check. We first encountered them years ago at Lopez Island's Saturday farmers market. Since then whenever we're on the island we frequent their farm stand. When you consider that they plow their fields using non-fossil-fuel-powered farming methods -- teams of actual plow horses, as their name suggests -- you feel genuinely happy purchasing and consuming their food. They're part of what makes Lopez Island a wonderful place to visit.

And on the countertop behind the register tons of croissants! I said, there they are! The two ladies working were not impressed. I asked for the flavors and the lady said, there is a menu right there. Ugh, not fully awake I realized a line had formed behind me. This is the spot to go before getting in a ferry. But, if you're in need of provisions, this is one of the few easily accessible (by boat) spots in the islands to stock up and be on your merry way.
