Not the biggest bottle shop in the area, but they stock a great selection and they have a lot of charm. If you're a beer freak or a beer geek in Oak Harbor, it's hard to imagine there's much better to choose from than this. They are just up the hill from the main waterfront drag on Pioneer--as a tourist you can eat well and get your shopping done, then come up here. As a local, you can come in from uphill. There's plenty of street parking, and inside it's pleasantly cool, clean, and bright. I'd actually love to see them tone down the lights and put the beer in coolers, but they seem to turn over stock reasonably well. Right now the beers are loosely arranged on wooden shelves, easy to grab. The selection ranged from west coast stuff (lots of WA beers) all the way to the EU and beyond. Nice cross-section of world classics and better local and regional beers. They fill growlers and offer plenty of different ciders, soda pops, and other treats. There are even a dozen or so different cigars behind the counter. I found some great stuff that you don't see in Seattle shops anymore: 3-Way, Barren Wood, North Coast Old Stock Cellar Reserve. If you like beer there is no better option. Im a big fan of Belgians and their selection is fantastic. After a few visits I started speaking with the owner and told him I really liked St Bernardus and since then he started stocking it for me. I also told him that Delirium sells 4 packs of cans as opposed to the ceramic and he started stocking that too. He is very friendly and provides incredible customer service. He has ordered me cases of beer, called me when they arrived and even stayed open a few minutes late for me to come by after work to pick it up. Unexpectedly cool beer store in Oak Harbor! The selection here is for people who know their favorite beer isn't in a gas station, or for those looking to discover new beers. They carry the most interesting, eclectic beers, and they're all priced per bottle. Call beforehand if you're looking for something specific though, because he doesn't have large quantities of much. The bottles range from just over $1 to $25, and it's all mix and match. He has everything from Belgian imports to local scotch barrel-aged stouts. The owner is super knowledgeable and can recommend interesting beers based on your tastes and interests. I went in looking to browse but found so many interesting, different, or hard to find beers that I walked out with a case! The owner gives a 5% case discount, and boy is it easy to find that many beers to buy there. He also does growler fills and sells his own branded growlers, which look quite neat. They are clear though, which is alternately really cool (because you don't see many clear growlers) or a little off (because it doesn't preserve the beer well). Granted, if you're trying to preserve beer in a growler, you're doing it wrong! (Drink it!!) Interesting selection, reasonable prices, and growler fills to boot! read more

Lovely couple and their dog selling some of the best craft beer and cider available. Great growler prices with a broad selection. We brought in our border collie with the owner's blessing and he noted the importance to him of making his shop dog friendly. When the tap blew halfway through our cider fill, he gave it to us for free and wouldn't charge us anything. Unexpected and very cool. We'll definitely make a point to stop in again when next we're in town. read more

I've never had a bad experience at Whidbey Beer Works. I think they claim to have 600+ beers, and I wouldn't doubt it. They have a WIDE variety of beers. And they have a Growler Fill station as well. I don't know what else you could ask for. The owner, Greg, is a great guy. I've been telling him about New Holland Brewing's Dragon's Milk for a couple of years now. Even though I only stop in every couple of months (I don't live on Whidbey), Greg remembered Dragon's Milk, and as soon as New Holland worked out a deal with a distributor in WA, Greg had Dragon's Milk on order! Since then, Greg has been able to acquire the recent specialty Dragon's Milk Reserve beer - S'mores. I haven't seen it anywhere else in WA, even at one of the larger bottle shops down in Seattle. I make a point to stop in whenever I'm headed to Oak Harbor to play some Omaha Hi-Low at the Oak Bowl's Card Room. Having recently relocated from Beervana (Portland) to the 'islands' I was absolutely depressed to not have access to the world of craft beer. Someone told me there was a great little beer store in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island. THANK YOU GOD!! My prayers were answered and I was saved from doldrums of supermarket beer. WBW has a great selection of I'd say 300-500 beers. They are nicely organized by genre and the store is well lit and easy to negotiate. Almost all of the beer is kept at room temperature. They have a small cooler selection, but be prepared to take your beer home warm for the majority of products. WBW maintains a small amount of beer schwag and industry rags and have tastings every couple of weeks. It is a small mom/pop operation and the service is friendly. I think the previous comment about Pliny the Elder is actually funny. But, I can tell you that bottle limits don't just happen here. This is a bottle shop standard for premium, small batch selections. So, be nice and ask for your beer nicely and be happy this place even exists. Quench your thirst my friends. Cheers! read more

Whidbey Beer Works is a true gem. It's a local, family-run shop, so it can't really have the selection you might find at a BevMo, but it's still priceless for Whidbey. They have a large selection of beers and ciders, which you can buy by the bottle rather than the case, which is nice when you're trying new things. The people who run it are great, too. I was originally tipped off about this place after finding a flyer of theirs on my windshield. Normally I'd just throw the advert away, but I took it home and looked up their website. Since I am a cider fan, I quickly noticed thier section of ciders on the site and was excited that they had many cider offerings... About half of them I'd not tried before. So i decided to pay them a visit! About a block off the strip of downtown pioneer way, if you didn't know of this place, you'd probably miss it. Case in point: I had actually driven down that block the day before and had no clue anything like this was there. Anyway, I entered and was greeted by the owner. Very friendly! Definitely the first thing you notice about the shop is that it's very clean and chocked full of 22oz bottles of beer. Some 12 oz, but mostly 22oz. A very, very large selection of beer! However I headed right toward the cider section. I found a many ciders, including a few I'd not tried before. While chatting with the owner, he informed me that I can buy single bottles, so I collected a 6-pack of ciders ( and one beer ) to try! I let him know that I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the shop via his ad on my windshield... And in turn he gave me a 10% discount! So, if you're looking for a much better selection of beer than at the local grocery store... Go here! read more

I've been to a lot of beer stores in the last few years, but this is hands down my favorite. The owners work very hard to get as much good beer in stock as possible, which is not easy at all given the Whidbey Island market and their general location. The owners are easy and fun to talk to, and are very passionate about the craft beer industry. Prices here are better than any other store I've been to, and they often give a small discount on large purchases. One thing that concerns me is the general lack of understanding about craft beer supply and demand on Whidbey Island. When I would be in looking around, I would often overhear people complain about the prices, and that to me is just ignorant. Most places with things like Pliny the Elder are making $2 to $3 profit per bottle, Whidbey Beer works usually makes between .50 to $1 profit per bottle. This is even more astounding based on how much more work they have to put in just to keep their inventory up! Beer lovers on Whidbey Island have a tremendous gift in this business. read more

Stop buying cat piss from safeway and go get your learn on with quality brews from around the world. if i had to guess there are atleast 500 different kinds of beer, meads, and wines here. Nice guy and his wife run it, have beer tasting the 1st and 3rd sat of every month (for a measly 3 bucks). I want places like this to make it, and if you like beer that does not look and taste like piss out of a freshly hydrated marathon runner, so should you. We saw an ad for Whidbey Beer Works in the binder at our hotel and knew we had to go check it out. We're big craft beer fans and were excited to pick up a few to enjoy while on vacation. We had a little trouble finding the place (that area of town is weird!) but were glad we found it. They have an amazing collection of beer! Huge selection and you buy single bottles instead of a whole sixer. They have taps and samplings. Best part is their huge selection of ciders. I counted over 30. Why 5? no way to treat Visitors Well, I had a trip to Whidbey Island WA and have recently found that I enjoy Pliny the Elder brewed by Russian River Brewing Company (during a trip a couple weeks prior to Santa Rosa / Sonoma) and so I searched and spent much time looking for it and found it at Whidbey Beer Works. I spoke with the Owner"s wife and was going to pick up some while in town for 2 days. So, I go in to pick up the beer and am told by the Owner (male) that he can only sell me 2 and forget about what was arranged previously with his wife for the beer. I also got to listen to him rant about Russian River Brewing Company and the brewer Vinnie and how RRBC beer was all hype and was not good beer etc. (everyone is entitled to their opinion), then while checking out I'm told that it sells for $9 a beer and I should feel lucky because people offer him more money than that for a bottle 500ml. Finally, the owner charges me $8 each for the Pliny and says he has to save it for his "real" customers! They sell it to "real customers" for less $7 / 7.50(I think). While the store has quite a selection, I will not be buying beer there again, as the experience was ridiculous. Anyone that travels knows that you treat people like you would want to be treated when you travel (not price gouge them). I also bought other beers while I was in the store but that will not happen ever again!! read more

This small business has a very nice inventory. The filling of growlers is a nice touch and is priced reasonably. Would rate the biz much higher except for the continued attitude of the female that works there. Very unfriendly to the point of being rude. As a small 'family' run establishment you would think that customer service would be important to them. I walked into an empty store and said hello to a gruff 'eghgggg' from an older lady. I was looking for a specific Brew and was surprised to find their selection was not much better than Safeway or Hagen's 'specialty beer sections.' I walked around for about 15 minutes hoping to get a 'specialty you need help?' or anythibg customer service related. Nothing. She just glared at me the whole time until I became so uncomfortable I had to walk out... To which she growled and stalked back off to what I imagine is a troll lair in the back...
