Love love loved this class, probably one of our most fun things to do in Nashville! Maryann Bird was kind, welcoming, patient and quite the Ambassador for the Music City. She clearly knows her biscuits! The location was unexpected and a little hard to find. Ms. Bird explained that her husband actually owned the little industrial park and when her classes got larger, instead of continuing to teach at her home, she fashioned a charming kitchen in the back of the building. There aren't any signs from the street, yet, so it's awkward driving around when you don't know what you are looking for. But one quick call and we were united with the other 12 people waiting for the class to begin. Maryann did a great job of explaining her credentials and how she fell in love with biscuits. She made biscuits right in front of us, talking us thru the process while making everyone comfortable with one another. She answered questions. She educated us about substitutions. And then she served us each one of those biscuits, complete with sausage gravy, to enjoy. After each table (there were about 6?) was given the tools and materials to make their own flour-y butter soaked delicacies. While those were cooking? Pictures, clean up, and a few products for sale (we picked up some biscuit cutters!) It was a great day, and wasn't affected by the heat OR scattered thunderstorms! Fun, engaging, and helpful class! My friend and I found this class through Groupon and decided to give it a try with ZERO idea of what to expect. Maryann made everything so comfortable and interactive for everyone. She's not only an obvious expert in the baking arena, but she is clearly an expert communicator as well. I loved that she integrated appropriate humor and a little bit of self vulnerability throughout the class. I would definitely recommend taking notes, either on a notepad or on your phone. The information is so helpful and I'm grateful I jotted everything down because it's a couple months later now and I'm having trouble remembering all the details on my own! **I'd also like to add a little note as a POC of Nashville. It feels daunting at times to get myself to go to events or classes like this - events that stem from such a strong Southern American history, where I know I will be one of few or usually the only person of racial minority. I often don't know what behaviors or microaggressions to expect from the facilitators or from the people around me. I honestly felt a little timid going in, but Maryann created and maintained such a warm, welcoming environment for everyone and this concern was absolutely a non-issue. SO FUN! You won't regret going!! Be prepared to laugh a lot and enjoy some delicious biscuits! My boyfriend and I were gifted this class as a Christmas present and we were hesitant if we would enjoy it as a 24 year old couple. It was such a blast!! Variety in ages and experience in the class! Maryann is funny and informative. While I'm no baker, even I learned enough to make some delicious biscuits. Maryann made us cheesy biscuits, cinnamon biscuits, and, of course, biscuits and gravy! My friend found this class online and we knew we had to give it a try. It's in a really weird warehouse, but the inside is cute and cozy with everything you need. We were greeted by Maryann, who is so warm and welcoming. She had some amazing cinnamon biscuits in the oven waiting for our arrival. She passed out the biscuits while she told us about her background. She then made a batch of biscuits and gravy and gave us her master recipe and tons of tips and tricks while she baked. She fed us again and then it was our turn. She walked around while we were measuring and mixing and gave us advice. Then we all left with a bag full of piping hot biscuits. It was a really great experience, though I wish there were fewer people. I think our class had 22, which felt pretty cramped. I also wish she had a cheat sheet that she could pass out with the recipe and some helpful hints. In the age of the cell phone it was fine because we all have something we can take notes on, but it would be a nice touch. This was the greatest baking class ever! So informative and hands on. Maryann is so sweet and knowledgeable when it comes to all things in the kitchen. I never knew there was a true art form to making biscuits! You may want to bring a notepad and pen to take notes because you'll want to be able to pull from that information again one day! I can now blow people away with something I thought could only be made by grandmas and southern belles. You will come out like a bandit from all the biscuits you get to eat and bake. You get to bring home the ones you make and brag to people that you made that! So fun! Wish I had taken the class with a group of girlfriends. Guess the husband will do. I had a great time at this class and learned a lot! Maryann clearly has this class down. She started by making two kinds of biscuits (one was biscuits and gravy) which were delicious. We then made our own biscuits, which was fun. She had a lot of her products there to sell, and they seemed very high quality and reasonably-priced. My friend and I agreed that this wouldn't be a great date, as a lot of it was listening and watching her - and her tips probably wouldn't be that interesting to someone not interested in baking. This biscuit class was a blast. It so surpassed my expectations! My BFF and I took the class in late January 2020. Wow Maryann is such a dynamic instructor. We bought her book and were surprised it really is a loving compendium of biscuit recipes from regional restaurants famous for their biscuits. I can"t read it without drooling. Everyone in class had a blast and lots of ohhhs and ahhs on the techniques for fail proof biscuits. I am not a frequent baker, when I left the class I truly believe I can now experiment with flavors while sticking to the basic recipe and make successful signature biscuits of my own. Easter Brunch here I come with my biscuits and gravy. My BFF went home and two days later made biscuits and sausage gravy (Did I mention Maryann taught us a great way to make gravy, too). Our biscuits and gravy were great hit with the family. Thanks Maryann for the new life skill. My BFF and I say we would rather have new experiences with each other than spend time shopping individually for gifts for each other. She was easily able to demonstrate and explain why the art of biscuit making is something that doesn't need to fade into the background or out of our southern tradition. My friend and I booked a class here back in July for this weekend and nobody ever showed up. We stayed 30 minutes after our scheduled appointment, hoping someone would show. Sadly, the doors remained locked, nobody ever answered the phone and we left very disappointed. It was in a warehouse that is very run down. There were 20 people in our class which is way too many for such a small space. Maryann was very knowledgeable about biscuits. However, she did not handout the recipe for her biscuits. If you wanted it, you had to buy her flour for $7.00 as the recipe was on the back. Because she sells, so many products, gadgets, etc. at her class, she was ringing up sales and over-baked the biscuits we made....they were hard as a rock. Showed up Sunday for the biscuit class and no one was there. After receiving 3 confirmation emails and text reminders we were on time. Had to take an Uber there because it is about 10-12 minutes from downtown in a run down warehouse area. Definitely does not look like the pics on the website. Don't know what it looks like inside cause no one was there. After calling the number, someone answered and had multiple excuses for the no show, "new scheduling software, no one was signed up and it's Super Bowl Sunday".
