I was visiting my brother and sister-in -law in Phoenix, OR and stopped in. I found a 50lb bag of organic fertilizer at a good price, purchased a unique heather plant I had not seen before. My favorite purchases were replacement parts for my many year old Felco hand pruners. I replaced the parts I needed when I got home and old pair of pruning sheers are "cutting like butter". I'm compiling my spring planting list so they have it available when I return for a Spring visit. read more

My wife and I stopped in early July to pick up a plant for our daughter following the unexpected death of her 22 year old son, our grandson. He died under very tragic circumstances and we were naturally distraught. It is a family run nursery, and the daughter Alexa began to help my wife find something. Of course Alexa asked what the occasion was, and eventually we shared essentially the whole story to pretty much a total stranger. Alexa was overwhelmingly kind and understanding. She spent at least an hour with us, mostly just sharing our heartache and comforting us. More than once we broke down, right there in the very public nursery, yet Alexa didn't once shy away or make us feel uncomfortable. Quite the opposite, she made us feel welcome and free to express our grief. Alexa helped us decide on a outdoor bonsai tree at a price far below what they could have sold it for. After we left, my wife and I cried off and on for the rest of our trip, reflecting on our grandson's death, but also blessed at the extraordinary kindness of a stranger. Thank you Alexa, (and your brother too - Harlan?). And thank you So Oregon Nursery for your compassion, even at the expense of your own business. We won't forget you! read more

A few years ago I worked with the owner of Southern Oregon Nursery to select a collection of various Japanese maple trees to create a very beautiful small forest in an area of my front yard. They turned out to be absolutely perfect and I decided I wanted to create two more similar areas in my back yard in front of our large forest of 50' tall Quaking Aspens, which I also purchased here years ago in 15 gallon containers. When I walked into their large front show room, there was no one there, so I waited. Finally, a young woman came from the back, and I asked if she could help me. I explained what I needed and asked her if they had a fairly large stock of Japanese maples to choose from at that time. She said, "Oh sure. All over the area and waved at their entire fenced area. You can just look around." Somewhat shocked at the lack of customer service, I asked her if she could show me their locations and we could discuss the trees before I bought. She somewhat reluctantly agreed to do so, and finally asked me for specific information about what I wanted to buy. I explained that I needed to purchase several understory trees to grow in the shade of some of my very tall Leland Cypress trees, as well as to select a collection of Japanese maples to replace some other plants to create that small forest effect. . We were talking specifics as we began to walk toward the front of the store and go to the large back area where the trees were, according to her, located in various places. Another couple walked in, and the woman immediately and loudly interrupted our conversation and started telling the young lady what she wanted. The young lady who was giving me service abruptly stopped doing so and devoted her focused attention to the woman who had rudely interrupted our conversation. I waited a few moments, but the customer service representative did not return her attention to me, and began to walk out with the new customer. I was completely ignored! I quietly said, "I'll come back at another time." The husband of the other customer apologized to me, but the wife who interrupted did not apologize nor did the customer service representative. They were so deep in their conversation that they appeared surprised that I was still there. I left and drove to Valley View Nursery where I purchased $2600 of absolutely gorgeous Japanese maples -- on sale at 20% off!!! My gardeners picked them up the following week and planted them. I think what happened was actually a blessing because the quality of what I bought was exceptional. They've been planted now for several weeks and are thriving. Next spring I have another area along the front of the house, where I want to create another small forest of Japanese maples. I will go back to Valley View Nursery and work with Jason, an expert with Japanese maples, who provided superb customer service in a warm, caring -- and very efficient -- manner. In the past, from the owner of Southern Oregon Nursery, I received good customer service which I rated 5 stars. This recent "service" was 1 star, if that. To honor my past experiences, I gave a 3 star rating but I will not be back again. This experience cost Southern Oregon Nursery a very good customer of many years standing. read more

I stopped by Southern Oregon Nursery because I cant find the vegetables I want for my garden. I have never been here before. I have driven by thousands of times but never stopped. So, what a mistake it has been that I have never been here before! This nursery was Amazing! Its huge behind the building and the employees actually HELP YOU! I have been looking for a Daphne bush for 3 years. My girlfriend and I had wondered throughout the property and didn't find any. So, we picked some plants and I needed manure for the garden so we went inside. Both of the ladies who worked there had so much knowledge. I asked about my manure, one gal went right out and got me my bags, we asked about the Daphne- and the other lady took my friend out and picked me out a beautiful Daphne. We discussed proper fertilizer and talked about what mixes to use for my veggies. I was so impressed. I really love to garden and this place just makes me happy. THEN we go and check out their coi pond and oh my gosh!!! They have giant and I do mean giant coi fish. They are a couple feet long and just beautiful. I took pics and a video, we will see if it will load up for you to see. If you are a gardener and you have never stopped here like me, then you need to stop and check this place out. read more

Hands down the best nursery in Southern Oregon: go just to view their gorgeous koi pond, mature bonsai, plants and general supplies. Every gardener would benefit by the ergonomically designed trowels they sell that will save your wrist. Next door is the Wishing Well - a fun store for garden related and house decor as well as serious pond supplies. This is a nursery that was started many years ago and the same family owns it. If you are traveling through Medford it is worth a stop. read more

I'm plant ignorant, so it's great when I can go to someplace unfamiliar and feel comfortable and have a pleasant experience. It's almost like walking around a park, there's so much to see and look at, from the koi pond with the most giant koi I've seen in my life. The bonsai collection is so cool. There's just so many varieties, the selection is huge. The staff was really kind and helpful, and I felt good even as unsure as I was. Will definitely go again. And again. read more

I have been going to SON for about 20 years. I ALWAYS find something interesting and new to plant in my garden. The entire family running the nursery are knowledgeable, always friendly and helpful (I can't emphasize that enough), they stand behind their products. Unless they are super busy, I have always gotten great and friendly advice, and they never put me off or ignore me. I really appreciate that they seem to have lots of time for persons like me (not a contractor) always looking for something different or unusual while at the same time having the most tried and true plants that I can always be assured will produce for me. This is a great nursery. Besides their healthy, interesting plants, the people working there really know their subject. In my experience this is the only local nursery where I can count on a well informed staff when it comes to what the plant needs, soil amendment, etc. You can buy plants in a a lot of places that call themselves nurseries, but if you're a real gardener, this is the real deal. read more
