Southlake is hanging on by a thread. An increasing amount of dead-malls are the standard across America. Southlake has lost quite a few anchor stores including Sears, Forever 21, Carson Pirie Scott and Dick's Sporting Goods. Macy's is left all alone and is struggling as well. However, this mall still has average interior stores. JC Penney, Bath and Body Works, American Eagle, Children's Place, Champs, Foot Locker and Cooper's Hawk are still going strong. There are options for massage chairs and kids trains throughout. I've come across photo booths and vending machines as well. I hope Southlake can bounce back and earn more quality stores like Gap, MAC, Apple, Aldo, Cheesecake Factory? Maybe I'm asking too much but I have a dream. lol. read more

I'm going to be really sad if the mall doesn't pull through because it's still great to stop in and visit. Sad they don't have Carson's or Sears anymore, but I stopped by the other night to get some stuff from Macy's and JC Penney. Good for southlake mall for keeping malls alive. Some empty spaces since flagship stores like Sears & Carsons left. It's sad to see malls go away! This Mall is located SE of I-65 and US-30 junction. It is fairly large, it is the only mall I have been to in Indiana, so just comparing it to other malls. I lived in Indianapolis but I do not remember a mall there. As some one else commented most of the negative reviews are centered on one incident, one of which there are 3 reviews for the same one. Our experience was that it was very clean and again as for the whole Merrillville area, the people were very friendly. The mall does have many amenities for kids. At the Southeast area there is a huge play area where you can pay to play. There also is the typical free play area in the middle of the mall, two gaming areas, and a train ride (not free). The food court was small then what you would expect from a mall of its size but overall nothing negative to say. read more

Mall is easy to navigate and has plenty of stores to make it a one stop shop. In the era of places abandoning their brick and mortar it's good to have this mall still going strong which I frequent. The parking situation can be questionable at times but that's at no fault of the mall and more in the patrons. read more

This mall has renovated and modernized itself through the years. It looks lovely, it had plenty of options and all of its stores are high-end quality. Its a very clean, neat orderly place with plenty of places to sit, eat and explore. This was my childhood mall. I'll always remember the Pokémon kiosk down in the center in the late 90s early 00s. I recommend the store Box Lunch for pop culture enthusiasts, and Cinnabon for a good bite! read more

I think the mall is decent. Probably more like a 3/5 stars. My friends and I like to go here for a couple hours just to hang out and go to BAM or FYE. Sometimes we go to Spencer's, Hot Topic, or Greenfield's. It's not the best mall ever, but the convenience of it all and the amount of stores they have available to the general public are nice. It's just like every mall that's slowly dying out due to online shopping. Just a quick side note, I've noticed few people have been giving one star to this mall based on their own personal issue of "a single clientele," and the mall being "ghetto" and full of "hood rats." Now why would anyone bring up a small population of people in their review of a mall? What do they expect to happen with the mall? You think the mall is gonna block and segregate people out just because some Joe Shmoe asked em to in a Yelp interview? Get real. Let's just face it: those people just want a chance to let out their micro-aggressions semi-anonymously because they know they're wrong for thinking the mall should do something about a clientele just because they dress/act a certain way. Last time I went, I only ever had problems with your typical anti-masker Karen/Kevin. They were the only type of people who ever gave issue to anyone, unprovoked. But do these people reflect the identity of the mall? No. If you have an issue on "certain people" just because they exist in the same space as you, it would be good to seek therapy and find a quote on quote "nicer" mall. read more

I usually go to this mall to get my eyebrows threaded at Brow Art 23. The lady there always does a good job. I go to the Kiosk near Bath & Body Works and sprint on the Ground Floor. I defintely recommend her if you are looking for a good eyebrow lady. I also visit Sephora and JcPenny's Sephora in this mall alot as well as the barbershop on the ground floor. This is a pretty basic mall, they tend to have everything you could look for in a mall. It not a fancy mall by any means.. They have a barber shop, JC Penny's, Sephora... they even have a Coopers Hawk in the mall. They have a huge selection of stores and kiosk for people to choose from.This mall is a great part of Merrillville Indiana... It's usually pretty packed when I visit. I would definetly visit this mall if I were in the area... I'm sure they have something you are looking for. They do have free parking and a huge lot. They are located next to a lot of other places like Chipotle and Pot Belly for example.. Defintely if you are in the area and you need something, check out South Lake Mall. read more

Northwest Indiana is always a nearby premier destination for me when I'm in a shopping mood! There are over 160 stores so I always find what I'm looking for. I was looking for some clothes for my trip and found a lot of reasonably priced items. Plus, you can't go wrong with Indiana's tax system! I don't normally eat in food courts but the Panda Express tasted great! Super nice staff and clean dining areas in the court. I appreciate how the mall continues to follow city, state and national health mandates. It's always super clean and feels safe, despite the number of guests always in attendance. read more

Mall is kept clean. Some decent stores left but like the dinosaurs, it time in the light is fading. Nothing really special to bring you in here. Covid will be the end of this place. Stores are dropping seems monthly only to be replaced by, if replaced, either sneaker, jewelry, ball caps or clothing aimed at the urban crowd. Food court has multiple boarded up spots. Nearby Illinois malls went this route to their demise. Better off online or at the outlets in Michigan City. NWI is quickly becoming indistinguishable from our neighbor Illinois. read more

Listen, I love a good mall! I'm not a huge fan of the online behemoths that are taking over brick and mortar stores. I like to touch and feel fabric, thus the reason I love a good mall. This mall is really solid. I think YELP should add .5 to their rating system. This mall is really better than 3 stars, right on the cusp of 4 stars. It's suffering, like other malls, with high rent, low occupancy, and window shoppers. Window shoppers, sticky fingers, redirection Of discretionary income, and high rent have caused quite a dramatic stir for brick and mortar stores. The mall is very well kept and clean. It has one of the best H&M's I've seen in a while. Most of the stores are large scale here. They take up a lot of retail space. The parking is plentiful and it's located in the main thoroughfare, with many entrances. I used to come here a lot when I was young girl. Our family would make 2 trips a year because the mall has the best stores. Some of those stores are gone now, but my love for this mall remains. read more

This mall is for the middle-class citizens, like most Americans (well, the Democrats may think otherwise...I'm not going into the politics today, even though I would like to). I won't digress here. There are typical mall-based store available, such as Bath and Body Works, New York Company, Wet Seal, Rue 21, and some toy stores so your kids will have something to do. Sadly, the store clerks will most likely watch after your kids since you like to neglect them! Once again, I would like to discuss about American parenting, but I will stay true with my review on this "mall." I think Coach may be the most high-end retailer in the mall. Everything else was "all-American," and you can probably detect what this mall is about by observing the clientele here. They're opening a Forever 21. Yeah, like they should. Teenagers have to go somewhere, as this place offers professional babysitting to your teenage rebels. The food court is pretty boring and choices of restaurants that provide decent meals are few. This is Indiana though. As many you know, this state is the "crossroads" of America...a.k.a. It's middle of nowhere; human traffic is just passing through and isn't here to stay. The retailers outside of the actual mall are way more attractive than the retailers inside the mall (DSW, Kohl's, TJ Maxx, Ross, Burlington Coat Factory, and etc). As the other three reviews have pointed out, this is the only mall in NWI. So here is the deal - the mall is anchored by Sears, JC Penny, Carson's, Dick's Sporting Goods, and my favorite Macy's. Inside of the mall, you have all of your normal mall stores including; a Books A Million bookstore, Aldo's, Bachrach, Vitamin World, GNC (yes, I'm a dude) and all of the little mobile cell phone stores throughout the mall. The food court has plenty to choose from including; Schoops, Taco Bell, Panda Express, and Sbarro. You also have a fairly new Cooper Hawk's adjacent to the mall. If you have kids like I do...they have a video game area in the food court, a children's play area near Macy's, Build a Bear Workshop, and a glow in the dark minature golf spot near the mall security offices. Oh shoot, almost forgot that they have a funflatable place for kid's birthday parties as well - I always take my three boys here - they love it. You also have a Chick Fil A, Red Robin, Chipotle, Potbelly's, Olive Garden, Chili's, BW3's, Tilted Kilt, and an AMC movie theater. If you are into getting your haircut and a message at the mall - you can do that too! Hey, whatever works for you champ. I do go to the eyeglass place in the mall, can't remember the name but service is fast and prices are average. The mall is always clean, security is very visible and present, mall staff (concierge) are nice....and most importanlty ... the bathrooms are always clean. Lastly, YES...the mall has teenagers that go and sometimes "hang out". If you are worried about young kids making your trip to the mall a bad experience then go Monday through Friday between the hours of 10am and 430pm or Saturdays and Sundays between 11am and 3pm. I was once a teenager and YES I did stupid things BUT I don't let that make my trip to the mall any less enjoyable. This is a great mall and adds value to our local economy so come out and support. read more

+2 stars for being centrally located. Aside from its ideal locale, this mall is horrible. The extreme number of teens, noise, and seemingly street activity going inside the mall makes for a very unpleasant experience. Going to the mall shouldn't feel like a chore when your out to spend your own money. Often times while walking through the mall I feel like I'm going to be robbed (maybe that sounds stupid, but when there are packs, upon packs of 10-19 yr olds racing through the mall, blocking walkways, brushing pass, -- not sure how else to feel). The mall security is a HUGE joke. 99.99% of the time they appear to be doing NOTHING. Not monitoring the kids behavior, telling them to slow down etc. Often times I see them having their own little laugh fest. Disturbing. Most of the food there, I wouldn't feed to my dog. Not to stereotype, but this mall needs be picked up and dropped off in Gary. When I go to the mall its a mission: How fast can I get in and out. read more

I don't say Westfield myself, and I don't know anyone else who calls it that, but, alas, that is it's name. Anyway. Southlake Mall is arguably the best shopping establishment in Northwest Indiana. Sure, it's kind of far out for most of us, but the huge assortment of items at this mall makes it worth it. I actually recommend Southlake as a great date spot; not only do you get to mall-walk with your potential sweetheart, but you also have a wide choice of places to eat beforehand or afterward. There's even a Chuck E. Cheese and a Showplace across the street. Inside the mall, you'll find countless stores catering to varied tastes; for my kind of people, there are places like Spencer's, Hot Topic, and Suncoast. All shoppers will be happy here, however, the urban shoppers have good places to get new gear and records, and there's even a candle store for your mom/mom's mom. The food court is mall-grade and mall-priced, which means you should eat before coming or plan to go out afterwards. I never really understood eating in a mall food court anyway; I never got the urge to eat while shopping. It's strange to me. So, back to the mall. Southlake has two floors, connected by both escalators and a glass elevator (which my mom won't take because she's scared of heights). Interestingly enough, right by the glass elevator is a two-story tall merry-go-round, perfect for the little kiddies and big kiddies with inner children alike. I heartily recommend this mall over River Oaks, if the choice is feasible. It may be farther out, but you are rewarded for your efforts. read more

This was the closest mall to my house up until a week ago (when I moved). They have a lot of shops and all the chains you're most likely looking for. They have a Dick's Sporting Goods attached, along with other anchors like Carson's, JCP, Kohl's, Sears, Macy's, and BAM!. There's also a Cooper's Hawk attached. As far as malls go, this one is clean and parking isn't as much of an issue as it is in Orland Park. read more

It said that the day I was there gunshots were fired and a Police officer told my wife it's dangerous there and she should not go there alone. This new incarnation of the mall is just fine, but I miss the Merry-Go-Round! Why did they have to remove it? Oh yeah, MORE kiosk space... They still have the kids cart rentals, just automated- no people. Everything is being automated here~ not much in the way of personal service of the actual Mall. On the plus side the stores are varied and abundant! Keep a weather eye out tho... skip a month & your store may have moved or closed! The kids play section is still there on the lower floor to help distract the kids but BEWARE... they may not want to leave, so wait til you're ready to go! read more

The only thing this mall is missing is Abercrombie because every major store is covered. How can I tell it's a good mall? I'm glad you asked! Because the parking lot is full of Illinois license plates. As big as Chicago and the surrounding suburbs are, if that many people are crossing state lines the shopping most be pretty decent. Once upon a time this was a decent mall. Unfortunately no longer the case. Have lived in the area for over 30 years. It's sad to see the current status of this mall. It use to have decent stores, but they have been dwindling by the years. Instead replaced by random ghetto stores. It seems the mall now only caters to one cliental. That does not reflect the surrounding towns population. The crowd it draws are constantly causing commotion and fights. They need to do something fast or it's just going to be another river oaks "mall." read more

Super duper busy on the weekends, and slower during the week. Lots of shops for you to find items that you're looking for, and nice employees ( for the most part). If you ask any mall employee for an item your looking for at most locations they will be able to suggest where to find it, if not direct you to a store in the mall with something similar. Lots of tiny boutique islands floating around d outside of the actual stores in the mall w/ gifts items as well- and clean bathrooms!! If you're a mall employee you get discounts in the food court, and at Gloria jean as well. read more

I like my mall, it's the closest one I have. The food court is pretty good too and my little niece loves playing in the play area. It has all the cool and trendy shops just like any other mall in America!! But it's not called Southlake anymore....it's Westfield. read more

My kids have a blast here! The price is reasonable for the amount of hours to play, your allowed an hour break to leave for lunch to come back and play till they close. Areas of play are kept very clean, they have a nice play area got smaller children as well. We had a birthday party here a few years ago and that was nice too. Will always bring my kids back here! I try to like this location they have a great selection. I went there close to Easter and I got a cute royal blue trench coat. I hung up my coat up only to find the sensors still on the coat. I do not live close I am 10 miles away from that particular store. Another time I was returning two items and the Associate misinformed me and told me that I had to get a credit causing me to leave with a piece of paper valued at almost $100. She was wrong the time had not passed on one of the items. There is an Associate that has been amazing when I have visited the store that has caused me to revise this review from one star to three stars by the name of Emerald. This mall is spacious. It's usually clean. They don't have as much selections of stores as they used to. I heard that more will go out of business soon, so that's even less. :( The food court is okay depending upon what you pick. It's usually kept clean. I see security walking and driving around often, so I feel safe. I would never go at night because of the bad things I've heard. The vendors that have kiosks sometimes call out to solicit customers, which is awkward/uncomfortable. I wish they would just zip it and let customers approach them. The kiddy area looks like fun and looks nicely maintained. They also have train rides and some little furry things to rent to ride around in. It's really not a bad place to go during the day at least for a short visit. read more

We were just there on Saturday September 30th. I'm from Lafayette and drove a hour and a half to go to your mall with my daughter and her boyfriend. They were stopped by a security guard at the JC Penny entrance to the mall door. He demanded their IDs. My daughter who is 17 didn't have her's on her, but her boyfriend, who is almost 17, did and show it to him. Then was told he couldn't go in to the mall because he wasn't 17. First off I was stand right there with them and wasn't going to letting them wonder the mall, we came to go shopping and I had the money. Second we were never told that there was a policy that we just couldn't go in. The security guard even called for backup. Seriously! When they got there they asked if he ID me... the answer is no! (I'm 46 years old and have white hair) The other guard asked me my age and if I was staying with the kids, I said yes and then he said that it was fine for us to go shopping. If you are going to have a policy like this you need to post it on EVERY DOOR!!! We entered through JC Pennys there were no signs on any of those doors or the door leading into the mall. I understand that your mall is trying to control a problem, but maybe you need to rethink how you are going about it. We are not from your city so we had no clue about your policy. And better training for the security guards so there aren't screw ups like this. If this is how you are going to treat paying customer, I guess we just won't be shopping at your mall any more... I will drive the Hour to Indy instead! read more

I haven't been to Southlake Mall in years. I was pleasantly surprised with how the mall looked and how clean it is. I was there on a Saturday afternoon and I saw signs in the mall on the rules they had about teenagers in the mall without parental supervision. I enjoyed being able to walk through the mall and it not be full of unruly teenagers. The mall is clean and bright. I liked seeing stores that weren't in the area previously in the mall now. read more
