Made an appointment at Southwest eye care to have my eyes examined thoroughly. It's was an easy check in, I completed a questionnaire on line which made it simple. The waiting area is roomy and comfortable with TV. . After a short wait , Denise my technician brought me back and we went through a battery of many tests. She was awesome, friendly and professional. The office is very large, clean and organized, Dr. Vance and her assistant were a super team, very experienced and organized we did many examinations and tests there was no rush. All my questions were answered throughly, it was great professional experience. I didn't have time this visit to pick out frames from their large selection, but I will return soon. Southwest Eye Care has excellent doctors -- they are knowledgeable, kind, and provide great eye exams. Unfortunately, my experience with the lens/optical department has been the complete opposite. The optical department's customer service and communication are extremely poor. Information given at the time of ordering glasses often changes later, and I've been told one thing in person only to be told something completely different afterward. It feels very disorganized, and there seems to be little to no communication between the optical staff, reception, and doctors. As a patient, that makes the process frustrating and confusing. The optical and lense department are dishonest. The frames that are completely covered by insurance are not clearly displayed and are hidden from view, while the more expensive frames are front and center. This makes it difficult to know what options are actually covered and creates pressure to choose higher-priced frames that insurance does not fully cover. As a result, patients often end up paying $100-$300 out of pocket for glasses that were assumed to be covered. Greater transparency and clearer communication about covered options would make a big difference for patients. It's disappointing because the doctors themselves are wonderful. I would happily continue seeing them, but I truly wish I could take my prescription elsewhere for glasses. I hope the optical department improves its transparency, communication, and customer service, because it does not currently reflect the quality of the medical care provided by the doctors. read more

I wish I could give the doctor/exam five stars and the place where you pick your glasses one star. I'll explain why. My exam was great. The staff were very friendly, the doctor was great, and the exam felt effective. It was probably the best eye exam I have ever received. No complaints there and I would highly recommend them for an exam. However, the section where you pick your glasses had some issues. First, the section where you try on and pick glasses is in the main lobby. I felt that was odd, as other places I have been to have it in it's own separate room. It was fine, no big deal. I picked my frames, and my fault, I didn't get a picture of them. No big deal, they knew what I wanted, or so I thought. I went to pick up my glasses and knew right away it wasn't the right frame. I questioned it and they compared the paperwork, stating it was correct. So I think the wrong frames were entered. I didn't fight it, although I was disappointed. My other issue is that the frames were twice as much there as I have found online in multiple retailers. So that is quite a markup. I couple options were added without being asked (though they may have been mandatory, I was never told). Plus I was never e-mailed my receipt, so I had to ask for a hard copy when I went in. So I paid a lot of money for a frame I didn't ask for. It's hard to prove one way or the other though, so it's why I gave them an average review. Will I go back? It's hard to say. I am due for a pair of computer glasses, so this may sway me to try another place to see if I get a better deal and get what I asked for. read more

My son and I were overdue for our exams and as most businesses have been closed we had to get scheduled later...This was our first venture into a medical office since before the lockdown let's call it. Also love her assistants funny girls with great sense of humors!!! (Very important to me lol) Everyone had masks on, social distancing in check, staff amazing as always and Dr. Vance (our favorite) Lol sorry had to say it my sons loveher and i agree with them!! She took care of my difficult prescription like a breeze and we were on to pick new glasses and order contacts with optical. Geez i wish i would've remembered the guys name!! He was just great i do miss Mike soooo much and i was worried hmmm who's gonna fill his shoes for us lol?? well this guy did great I'm super picky lol and he pulled out soooo many frames for me and we finally found some super cute jimmy choo that i fell in love with!! Same for my son he made the whole awkward process flawless lol...you can't touch you point to the ones you like then try on, no goes into the no pile, yes goes into the yes pile then all are sanitized after. Went for my first visit today. Was super scared because my vision is degenerating from diabetes and I've been putting it off. Everyone at the office was wonderful and accommodating. It took quite a while for the doctor to make it back, but when he did I realized why it took a while. He spent a meaningful amount of time discussing my eyes and the science behind why my eyes are doing what they're doing. I didn't feel rushed, I felt like I was talking to a doctor who gave a care despite me being a first time patient. I'd wait four hours to have an interaction with a doctor like that. Dr. Cheung has a seriously impressive understanding of his profession - as we expect all doctors to, but most dont ride to the ability to trust their patients to also be able to understand the science and break it down for them. That's a real talent. It wasn't the best news, but I have a realistic idea of what to expect and how to proceed. Thanks Dr Cheung and team! BP read more

I have been coming to Southwest Eye Care for almost 20 years now as my parents came here and when I had my own insurance, I stuck with this place because I loved the service and the professionalism here. The office is small, but inviting and the medical assistants are always friendly when they check you in. My current optometrist has seen me for more than 10 years now and she has always been very friendly and professional. She always comes in with a smile and makes sure I feel comfortable. She rocks! I also like the fact that when choosing frames, you have lots of options and when you finally choose the ones of your choice, the optician breaks down how much you will have to pay out of pocket vs how much the insurance will cover. It's a simple thing, but it's those details that count! From what I can remember, this is the only optometrists' office I have ever been to and I can see why I have stuck with it. This is a review for Lasik only. I came to Southwest Eye Care party because of the reviews on Yelp. I just had my eyes done three days ago. I had really bad eye sight. Like -7 and -6.5. I made an appointment for a free consultation. I had to wait 5 days because I had been wearing contacts. So I go in for my consultation and Lisa is an absolute delight! So my eyes were too bad to get an easy ok. So I had to return later that day when the doctor was in for an intensive eye exam (still free). So after the most thorough eye exam in my life, the doctor finds my corneas are thick enough to fix my sight. (If they hadn't been there were other options so if you are blind like me, there are other options if you don't have thick corneas). So the doctor sees my eyes are dry so instead of rushing me to surgery to make the quick money, he says, I would be miserable if I had it done right away. I get a prescription for eye drops and scheduled for a followup in three weeks. I go to the follow up and am given the okay for surgery. I was nervous for the surgery. In hindsight, I should have taken the larger dosage of anxiety medicine they give you before surgery but I didn't want to risk being TOO relaxed. The surgery is done at Millennium Surgery over by Memorial Hospital. Everybody was very professional. Girls, you will get a pregnancy test even if you had a tubal ligation if you are in the age range for pregnancy. (Good news though, the tubal ligation still hasn't resulted in a pregnancy 15 years later). There is two lasers. The first one is the worst. Its not painful at all. Just nerves I think is what makes it the worst one. Probably about 20 minutes and I was done with both eyes. Then you get cool goggles to wear and a half a norco and your over 18 year old ride gets your discharge instructions. I arrived at Millenium at 2pm and by 3:30, they were calling my ride. You go home and go to sleep for a few hours and then you start your eye drops/antibiotics. Following day, you have a followup with Dr. Steiner. Had an eye test, and I have 20/20 vision. Only regret I had was waiting this long. Cost wise, figure about $5,000. read more

I took my daughter here for her very first in depth eye exam. The doctor is very good with kids and the appointment was fast and efficient. The only two things that I see can improve are their eye glass selection for kids and perhaps having more economical eye glasses for those of us without insurance. read more

Got there at 7:55 & turned in all paperwork that I prefilled out ahead of time. The wait time was long and the front office staff seemed disorganized. At one point I could hear someone calling for me in the waiting room while I was sitting, waiting, in the exam room! I will point out that the staff is very pleasant and nice and it was a Monday morning. But I have to say that despite all of this the exam I received was fantastic! Our whole family is taken care of by Dr Vance. She's very good with the kids and it's clear that she loves what she does. My brother was grinding at work without safety goggles (not the brightest bulb) and got a piece of metal stuck in his eye. After a few days of "letting it work its way out" he decided that he needed help. Dr Vance dropped what she was doing and met him at the office, on her day off, to remove the rusted piece of metal. This review is for Lasik.... I was very interested in getting Lasik this year and once my income taxes came in it was a for sure deal! It would be a nice down payment. I researched any discounts that my vision plan had and sure enough this was the only establishment in bakersfield that provided any. I would get a 15% discount through vsp. My total cost would be 4900.00 Ouch I know, but it was a well worth investment for myself. Note: if you wear contacts, they advise you not to wear 5 days before your consultation So, I made my first appointment to see if I qualify for lasik. I met with an employee named Lisa she was very kind soul and took me to the room to run some tests on my eyes. turned out she said something was off and i may not be a candidate. she noted that she will pass on my results to the doctor to have a further look. The doctor had a chance to look at my profile and i received a call saying everything was good to go and i needed to have one more further consultation and have some more eye exams performed. During that visit i would go over the lasik procedure and have medication (eye drops) prescribed for me. Also, all of the money would be due that day. A portion to southwest eye care and the other to the medical facility. Lisa was in charge of taking care of me as far as the Lasik department. She was very informative and answered all of any of my questions I had. Day of procedure: I checked in, met with lisa and and nurses gave me some oral relaxers and numbing eye drops. waited for about 30 minutes then went to surgery room. Note: i was awake during the procedure. There was four people in the room including Lisa and Dr. They made me feel comfortable the whole time. There were two laser machines and you did each eye on each machine. Total time being under laser was very short, under 2 minutes each eye. The rest of the time in the surgery room was prepping and all the fun stuff. After the procedure my eyes were watering for a couple of hours and felt like i had a small hair in my eye ball. Note: You have to have someone take you home and sign you out after the procedure due to the "drugs" they give you. Plan to be at the surgery center for approx. three hours. I was given eye goggles and told to go home and rest for four hours. I just stayed home and relaxed. After a couple of hours I could see good, my eyes were just watering! You are told to wear your goggles every time you sleep for 10 days and don't rub your eyes!!! I had no pain and no down time. Next day I woke and could see clear as day! It was amazing! That day you have a follow up appointment with the doctor to check things out and make sure everything is okay, It was! I then had another follow up exam with my primary optometrist 2 weeks after and made another appointment a month after the previous appt. I am waiting on that appt. Its been over a month since Lasik Surgery and I have no problems with my sight! I couldn't be any happier! I should have done this years ago! Thanks again!!! I've been going to Southwest Eye Care for several years and they are always great. It's a short wait time and I get in to see the doctor right away. I always see Dr. Miller and he is really helpful and listens to what I have to say. The last time I went and I was having problems with my eyes being dry and I'm also interested in Lasik so he is helping me to get ready to have surgery soon. I needed to get some new glasses this time and they had some great options. I found a great pair Ray-Ban glasses that look really good on me. I'm really thrilled to have them and I see really well with them. I bought contact lenses from them last year and it took a couple of sets to get ones that were comfortable with my dry eye. Dr. Miller was really patient and helped me to find the right ones that I was comfortable wearing all day long. I've been wearing them for one year now and they are great. I had PRK surgery to correct my horrible vision last December. I was never a candidate for any laser correction surgery before because my cornea is too thin. However, Dr. Miller knew I was always interested and when the technology got good enough to make me a candidate I jumped at it. It was pretty expensive but I didn't care. I've had such bad vision my entire life and I hated contacts and glasses. The surgery plus all post treatment was $4800 (after 15% covered by my insurance). Dr. Stainer does all the eye surgery and I felt in very good hands. They answered all my questions and were honest about the expected results. They said I may never have 20/20 vision with my eyes and I wasn't a candidate for a second procedure. So this was my one and only shot. Well now I see 20/15 (better than 20/20) and my eyes are still healing and I should see the final results within 6-12 months so it could get better. My only complaint about both of their offices is the very long wait times. I've waited over an hour once for a 10 minute post-op visit. Expect your appointment to run 30-45 minutes late on average unless you book early in the morning. However the time you spend in the waiting room is worth the dedicated care you receive. I would recommend Dr. Stainer for laser eye surgery any day. read more
