This was our first visit and definitely won't be our last. We stumbled upon Southwest Mountain and left wondering why we hadn't heard of it before. The food was a highlight... the ricotta and strawberry bruschetta was a lovely combination, and the pimento cheese dip had a nice little kick to it that we loved. Paired with good wine, a beautiful setting, and top notch service and you really can't ask for much more. Safe to say it's officially been added to our Charlottesville rotation. We've been members now for over a year. I highly recommend joining. I have only found four Vinyards in the area that have good reds and Southwest Mountain has excellent reds. Greg, Sarah, and especially Tara take excellent care of us. I have back issues and only one table is comfortable enough for me to sit for awhile and they are kind enough to reserve it for us if we reach out far enough in advance. There is always plenty of seating and it's one of the few wineries with a beautiful building and nice interior also. read more

Southwest Mountains Vineyard has wonderful ambience, good food, and flavorful wines. This is a great winery to visit with friends or as a couple. Their spacious tasting room has high tops and couch seating -- it's an intimate vibe. The food is good. We had the brisket sandwich, which we definitely recommend. Skip the margarita flatbread. It's just regular pizza, though it was good. I wish I tried the BBQ chicken flatbread instead. The wines are solid--the reds, whites, and rose. We enjoyed every wine in our flight, and our cider (Son of a Bear) as well. Scenery is lush with mountains and vineyards in view. SMV should definitely be on your wine trip itinerary. read more

This was our second visit to the tasting room but our first time visiting the adults-only second floor. Greg greeted us when we arrived and answered our questions before guiding us upstairs. Located in a renovated pole barn, Southwest Mountain Vineyard is probably the most posh tasting room in the Monticello AVA, with Mt. Ida as the second and King Family as third. We enjoyed a bottle of the 2021 Rosé ($25) and the crab dip appetizer ($25), made gluten-free upon request. We would absolutely order both again. Malik provided excellent table service. I look forward to visiting the new tasting room again soon. Here are a few tips: children are welcome accompanied by an adult in the first floor only. Well-behaved pets are allowed on a leash outside. If you prefer an adults-only experience, the second floor is a great option and boasts a gorgeous view of the vineyards. read more

THE BIG: Located in Keswick, a few miles east of Charlottesville. This is a massive estate with beautiful terraformed land and vineyards growing. Tons of indoor, outdoor seating available as well as a gigantic parking lot. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We came here on a Friday afternoon since this is one of the wineries that closes at 6pm instead of every other winery which closes at 5pm. It was still very busy and we were thankful. We got the petit verdot tasting which contained two reserve petit verdots. All very young (around 2020 and 2021 vintages). These aren't pure petit verdots meaning, 100% but it qualified for the petit verdot label since it had more than 75% of that varietal in the wine. The blending grape was merlot. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Beautiful estate and the petit verdot tasting set us back around $30. This spot is going to be a mainstay in the Monticello AVA. Mark my words. read more

Really nice renovated barn. Nice outdoor area, but to hot the day we were there. There was live music playing. Friendly staff, our waitress was really nice and Greg stopped by for a few minutes. Ordered the Huntsman flight which I really enjoyed. The Chardonnay was a bit different some almond and a little pear taste. My favorite was the petit Verdot. I came here on a Monday afternoon, hoping for a wine tasting and food. As I had my pup with me, we had to be downstairs, where, sadly there wasn't any food. But! The red wine tasting was very tasty (merlot!!) and pretty healthy pours in beautiful glasses. The view was lovely and they let me stay inside with my dog as it was hot outside. VERY slow on a Monday (not sure what it was like upstairs). I highly recommend! They had a case sale for $100 for a case - a steal! read more

After spending years going to some of the same old favorites, we decided to try out a few new ones on a winery tour in the northeast area of Charlottesville and we are so glad we did! From absolutely gorgeous indoor/outdoor spaces to an extensive wine and food menu, this place was our favorite of the day. The food was absolutely delicious and pretty reasonably priced (especially compared to some other nearby wineries). We got 2 different flights, crab dip, and a cheese and charcuterie board and enjoyed everything we tried. After dining at the bar, we headed outside to the fire pit area to listen to some live music. We had a great experience at Southwest Mountains Vineyard. Despite being 20 mins late for our reservation, we were welcomed and greeted with smiles. We were promptly seated within their outdoor terrance area which has large umbrellas and seating that comfortably fit our large party of 8. We ordered red and white wine flights and a wine cider - all the wines were delish! I'm not a rose' fan but I enjoyed their rose' which was light and refreshing. It was a beautiful Fall day. Visited this new vineyard (11/12/23) at the suggestion of a server at Merrie Mill Vineyard. It was hard to find initially as GPS doesn't take you to the proper entrance but the posted signs helped to get us in the right direction. The grounds and building are beautiful though it doesn't offer the majestic Mountain Views if you're looking for something more photographic. We sat outside initially with our flights (one red, one white) and listened to the band, a trio who played mostly Beatles songs. After we headed upstairs for a snack. The upstairs area offers a variety of seating, several couches, bar, high top, and is extremely spacious. The staff was very friendly and the crab dip was delicious! We will absolutely be back the next time we are in the area! read more

Horrible experience yesterday with a group of people. The manager and waitress were horrible. Couldn't move our group when they put us right in front of live music. The waitress was messing up our orders, forgot drinks, the manager was rude wasn't even apologetic or problem solving to the situation. Gross service after coming here weeks prior. The fact they kept suggesting drinks then giving the wrong ones or forgetting orders...they didn't even comp the ones they forgot once they finally brought them. The grounds are undoubtedly beautiful, but the vibe was ruined as soon as we walked through the door. We were met with groups of patrons arguing about their reservations. We didn't have a reservation but were told we could sit at the bar. We were placed on the end of the bar behind a big flower arrangement despite the fact that we were the only people at the bar. We waited for 15 minutes at the bar, watching servers and the MOD (Ryan) walk behind the bar without acknowledging our existence. Visited on Saturday and while the building is beautiful, the wines showed room for improvement. They are still very young (vines planted in 2018 or something) and so maybe they are still figuring out the vine-to-wine process. Viognier was served warm (who would have thought) and some of the whites were undrinkable (the first white in their flight, the blend, was a pour-out). Reds were better but still fairly mid-tier for Virginia. Was expecting a lot more given the money put into the building itself. Had some food too which was mid-tier as well...dry flatbreads that were lukewarm. Spoke with the MOD Ryan for a bit and asked about the white wines being served warm. He said that's basically how they do it. Our favorite was the cider on tap, had a pint to finish out the experience. Very much a cookie-cutter winery in a high-end building...with prices to match the building but not the quality of the wine. We prefer Merrie Mill and Keswick if you are in the area. read more

My husband and I visited this vineyard to sample the wine. It's been open less than a month. The wine was lovely, but the atmosphere was fantastic. The staff were warm and friendly; even the chef came out and talked with us about how they source the ingredients for their food locally. We had plans to eat elsewhere, so we did not order from their kitchen, but we will be back soon to do so. The food that came by us looked delicious. The tasting room and restaurant are absolutely beautiful, as are the views from the deck. A+++ in my book, and I'm thankful we got to experience it before all of Charlottesville discovers it. read more

We can't recommend this "hidden gem" enough (although I'm certain it won't be hidden for much longer). The venue is stunning- from the luxury cabin vibe with stone fireplaces and outdoor fire pits to the green pastures and mountain views. Great wines (we preferred the whites this go around) and amazing food - thanks to the highly talented and gracious Chef Greg. The entire staff -from Ryan at the host table and Tara behind the wine counter -made us feel welcomed and eagerly shared so much about the history of the venue and the expectations of what's to come.
