When we travel it's mandatory to talk to local people, what a great spot to do so, and such an interesting person behind the bar. This is a smaller tasting room off the main road that offers wines, meads and ciders. I opted for a 5 wine tasting and enjoyed them on the sunny deck. I had a mix of white and red wines that were too dry for my liking. The Vidal Blanc was the only one that was ok. The woman working at the venue was really nice, but it's not a place I would revisit as these wines are not to my liking. read more

This is a unique winery because they have mead wine. I really like mead. I was tickled to finally introduced it to my husband. They have lovely gardens, a gazebo, plenty of outdoor seating. It's not a place to go unless the weather is cooperative. I liked their Chardonnay is aged in oak. It is lightly buttery and it has a nice light finish unlike other Chardonnays that can be heavy. This would make a great table wine. I also really liked their wild flower mead. Its sweet, light, and floral. It's a perfect sipping wine. This wine I want to drink cold sitting by the pool on a hot summer day. They serve appetizers. We had a savory cheese ball that that a praline topping served with gourmet butter crackers. It was absolutely divine. We will absolutely return here. read more

Adorable small winery. My husband and I on a whim stopped at this winery and did a tasting of 6 wines and really enjoyed ourselves. Not only was the wine nice but the service was amazing. Our server even recommended a great nearby place for pizza afterwards called Iron Pipe which we enjoyed. This place has a casual, cozy vibe and nice wine. They had many different wine varietals to choose from and even wine slushies so there's definitely a glass of something everyone can find to enjoy! read more

We stopped here after Barboursville. It's a contrast, as this is smaller and feels more rustic. We were greeted by the owner's 5 yo granddaughter- she announced she just lost 2 teeth, and then showed us the wine list like a pro. We were the only ones in the tasting room, so we had nice conversation with our server and the owner. For a mere $8, we got 6 samples and the glass to keep. They also had cider donuts! The wines were okay, but the local charm of the experience has me giving it 4 stars. read more

Enjoyed my visit, but this place takes a bit of 'splaing. Honah Lee is an amazing vineyard that only recently started making wine under their own label, which is bottled at Michael Shaps Wineworks. But Honah also is the tasting room for Well Hung, and alternate tasting room for both Michael Shaps wines and Gabrielle Rausse. So during any visit, you'll find wines from 1-2-3-4 different labels. Follow me so far? Ironically, many (or was it all?) of these 'guest' wines are made with grapes from Honah Lee's own vineyard, so in a way they are indirectly 'their' wines as well. If you've been to these other places, there's a good chance you've had HL's grapes. This makes HL a great place to visit if you appreciate any of these wine makers (and you should; these are top notch places), or simply want to show your appreciation for the 'true source' of some amazing wines! The tasting room is teeny tiny; it almost feels like a bakery and wine store (in fact I got some amazing jellies here!). But with a menu of (when I visited) 20 tasting options, you pick 6. HL's wines trend towards soft reds. A partial list of what I tried: Petit Manseng: Not sweet, more syrupy. Not bad but not my style. 2015 Meritage: Still young; spicy nose to it but still on the lighter side of medium. 2015 Pinot Noir: Liked it, but again on the softer side of medium. 2015 Malbec: A rarity for Virginia! The terroir isn't conducive to the bold Malbecs that are my favorite, but I did enjoy this one. They went out of their way to tone down the boldness, to include keeping it in neutral oak for only 7 months. Rosso Malbec (Gabrielle Rausse): I'm including it here because apparently this isn't sold at GR's actual tasting room. At $18 this bottle is a steal! Barberra, Sangivese, Refosco (a bold Italian grape I never hear from). Bought a bottle. PS: BerryWood Farm is the bakery side of the business, although they are the same building. read more

My husband and I had such a wonderful time here! We had Trish attend us in the new year of 2021! She was so knowledgeable and great company as she guided us through the wine tasting! Do not be fooled by the look of the outside! The inside is so cute, cozy, and the personal attention is the best! Very different from corporate wineries in Virginia. The 2017 wines are a must! Me and my wife's first wine tasting experience. We came at a time nobody else was there (sadly because they deserve the buisness,) and the woman up front helped us our considerably. She wasn't fake and over enthusiastic but was kind and explained everything to us in a quick and easy to follow manner. We mostly tasted meads and they all tested well made. They actually partner with another company to serve meads as well. (Saga Meadery) the wines and meads were all pretty great and were given in great portions so that me and my wife could both try them for just 15 dollars. If anyone is nearby and wants to try some great wine and wonderful meads. This is your one stop shop! read more

Located just minutes from our AirBnB accommodations, we were in for quite a treat when we arrived to have the whole place to ourselves! Honah Lee is one of the reasons why we love visiting wineries. You never know what a winery will look like until you get there. HL is a very small, almost "tiny house", "shed like" building. Cute inside with a couple lovely barrel tables that gave my hubby an idea for our 2 wine barrels. The server was a very pleasant woman. A huge plus for me was that HL takes the Virginia Wine Pass! We had a BOGO tasting. The tasting is choose 6 wines for $6...any additional wine is $1. So I chose 2 whites, 3 reds and 1 vanilla honey mead. I had mead years ago and so thought I would try again. The wines are good. One of our fave wineries is Michael Shaps and so to learn that the grapes for Shaps are actually grown by HL, makes sense! The mead was NOT for ME. If you like sickening sweet and syrupy, then by all means have the mead. Just a personal preference. Very pretty property with beautiful gazebo! read more

Small interesting vineyard. Not fancy at all. Their wines are good but they seem to be more into meads. Which for me are to sweet.

We tasted six wines, but generally found them somewhat harsh and in need of aging or perhaps aerating. The tasting room associate noted that the reds benefited from being decanted for a while. The tasting room isn't huge, but there's a nice adjacent room for sitting and a very large amount of outdoor seating, some of it shaded. We were surprised by a car that had to be owned by an employee (it was the only one there besides ours) that had a semi-vulgar sticker on the rear that we noticed as we departed. Seeing that put a bit of a damper on an otherwise pleasant experience. read more

Although we had been to this winery before, it had been awhile since our last visit. Yesterday we stopped in for a couple of slushes. I left me eyeglasses in the car so when it came time to pay the bill I just trusted the server, left a tip and that was it. Then when I got home and looked at my receipt I was shocked to see that we were charged $$31.52 for 2 shushes. That's $15.76 each. So, a) a strange amount and b) ridiculously too expensive. We just came from another winery and paid $36 for 4 slushes. Very disappointed. read more

Such a great experience here! They have outdoor tasting where Jorge samples 11 different wines. Wine is yummy and the Eric (owner) who walks around chatting with patrons is a great guy! It's a smaller tasting room but didn't matter on a beautiful day. Jorge was great and served our party of 6 and others well! Plenty of room to buy a bottle and hang out too! We went on Dec 22 in covid. It's the first family trip we've taken since the virus began and we found them extremely accommodating, kind and had a great experience. We took our two boys, one autistic and full of energy, and were the only people there. Covid procedures were followed well. We each got the 11 wine and mead sampler and bribed the boys with snacks, while we enjoyed ourselves. The server Kim, was amazing with our little ones and they ran around outside while we finished tasting. The Malbec and spicy mead were my favorites. We bought two bottles, the boys got homemade treats and soda and we all left happy. I read a review where a parent said they weren't kid friendly. The place is pretty tiny. If it weren't covid and so close to Christmas, I'm not sure how long we could've stayed with my son's disabilities, so far as him being a nuisance to others bc he's 55 lbs of wild and the building is small. However, we felt 100% welcome and the boys were allowed to play outside, the older one watching the youngest, with no issues. Again, I can't compliment the staff enough for giving this mom a break and making my family feel welcome. We stopped in for a wine tasting, as it's our goal to hit every single VA vineyard. We thought it was going to be rather basic and limited, given its small tasting room, but we were wrong!! The ladies giving the tastings on the day we went were VERY friendly and knowledgeable with their wines, their vineyard and the other wines they offer. This vineyard has been in business over 20 years and has 30 acres under vine, which is quite large, especially by today's standards of everyone opening a winery with only a couple of acres. This winery went through many years of growing grapes and selling them to other vineyards, so now they make their own wines and they do a really nice job of it! They also make jellies and have a HUGE venue for parties, weddings, etc. The owner is great, very friendly and outgoing, we had a great time chatting with him and learning about what he's built. We highly recommend stopping in, as a group of many or few, they'll accommodate you and show you a good time with some great wine! read more

Honah Lee is a small winery right alongside US-15 (James Madison Hwy) just south of Orange, VA. And I mean *right* alongside the highway (see pic). But don't let that fool you. They have a wide variety of well-made wines, and are incredibly welcoming. Katie, who poured our tastings, was happy to bring them out to us on the porch (COVID) and came by several times to explain the wines and talk with us about the grapes. She's very knowledgeable and a pleasure to chat with. And she poured us a gratis bonus flight at the end of their better wines. What more could you ask for? read more

My fiancé and I ventured out for a weekend in the country and Honah Lee caught our eye with their winery... Plus the chance to make jam. We arrived and Brandi was wonderful and explained everything along the way of our homemade jam making. As our jam cooled, her husband Eric gave us a tour of the winery, loaded with personal and historical stories that made it so much more special. We returned to a beautiful lunch, which we followed with a wine tasting. The tasting room is adorable and the two ladies who hosted were knowledgable, funny and so welcoming that we had no desire to leave. There's a story behind every wine, including the brand the vintners took over from a family who no longer wished to produce it, called "Well-Hung Winery." There is a huge difference between tasting rooms in VA. Many have a corporate feel to them, some not so much, but nearly all of them focus on the product. Honah Lee captures something few others have. In addition to some really good wines, they have a very comfortable friendliness you need to experience to understand. Spend 30 minutes here and you'll feel like you've made new friends. There is something unique and special about the personal warmth this place naturally captures.
