Friends recommended Merrie Mill, and we're so happy we listed to them! We have visited Merrie Mill twice in the last five months for wine and lunch. The atmosphere is fun and creative -- both inside and outside. You know you are in for a treat when you walk through the front door with its eclectic decor. They have seating both inside in what feels like someone's really cool living room as well as outside on their patio or on their lawn. You can order wine by the flight to sample their offerings, as well as by the glass and bottle. I recommend doing a flight to determine what you like, then order some bottles to share or take home. Their lunch menu includes salad, soup, and sandwiches -- all with a creative touch -- as well as a children's menu. They also have delicious cake by Cake Bloom and Nightingale ice cream sandwiches. Merrie Mill Vineyard is a must-visit if you're in the Charlottesville area. The grounds are absolutely beautiful--and the decor inside is one of a kind. The entire space is thoughtfully designed and picturesque. Our group was seated on the patio upstairs. It was a great view and the shade was nice on a warm sunny day. Half of our group got wine flights, while the other half just ordered a glass of wine. The wines we chose were fantastic! Our server was knowledgeable and attentive as well. We also shared a handful of food dishes that were all tasty and delicious. The pizza was a big hit! Merrie Mill is the kind of place where you can spend a lazy afternoon sipping wine, soaking up the scenery, and just enjoying the moment. Stunning tasting room and wonderful service. My friend and I visited Merrie Mill this weekend and were so pleased with our time here. We were a bit late for our reservation, as we did the vineyard horseback riding experience right before, and they were super accommodating to us which is really appreciated! We sat in the uncovered terrace section and it was perfect! We had a great view of the live music performance and were extremely comfortable under the shade. For food my friend and I both ordered the "Feast of the Month" sandwich which was turkey and brie, with a cranberry pistachio sauce. It was accompanied by blueberries and a side salad. This wasn't our first choice, we wanted the cheddar panini (sold out), but it was a great second option! We both were plenty hungry after horseback riding and felt refreshed after our meal. We also did the wine tasting and once again the staff was super accommodating to us! There was a mixup with what we thought was included with our previous experience and the manager sorted it out right away. We weren't the biggest fans of the rose and the white blend (a little acidic for my taste) but we loved all of the red options! I have to say our server was amazing! Can't remember her name but she was the young lady with the reddish hair. Not once did we feel rushed and she was very attentive! All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and welcoming! There's a cool barn with a merry-go-round outside and you'll find even more delightful and fanciful decor as you walk in the door! Every detail from the blue bar to the light fixtures, to the bicycle water cart, to the gorgeous wallpapers, pretty mirrors, animal leg sinks in the restroom, balloons and even the tile - every single piece was carefully crafted and arranged to spark your attention!! Enjoyed our winter visit to Merrie Mill. The place is outfitted fantastically (actual fantasy vibes, and also done very well) so being stuck inside on a cold day isn't a bummer like many other wineries. They also have a heated patio where we sat with our young kids for a low stress and comfortable spot. I enjoyed all I tasted as far as wine and the cheese board was plentiful and delicious too. Their wine club seems like a pretty good value compared to others in the area, if location is convenient for you. It's a cute whimsical winery that you've never heard of, but has been there for a while! They have a classy dining experience and their decor makes it a great spot for a special occasion or girls visit. They have a large outdoor section where you can picnic, order food, get drinks and just hang out. They asked if we had reservations when we arrived and promptly told us they were booked but we could sit beyond the patio and order food and drinks from the bar. A big part of me wonders if that because we had our kids with us, as there were available tables and ones that never sat anyone during the duration of our visit. I noticed all kid families were "beyond the patio". Wine was pretty good, but expensive for what it was. Food was good but it took over an hour to get it. We ended up just taking it to go after polishing off a bottle of wine. It's not a bad little spot, but not one of my favorite Charlottesville winery experiences. read more

Seventh stop on our wine tasting weekend: Saturday 3pm. This newish (2021) tasting room was a pleasant surprise. We were greeted by live music as we entered the rustic tasting room. We had a very nice lunch stop here on our way to Wintergreen. The setting was delightful- my 11 year old neice (and my 80 year old mother) loved the quirky decor. Second best thing is that dogs are allowed in the tasting room! Service was very friendly, though food service is a little slow (and the menu was pretty limited). Wines were okay but a bit overpriced. The reserve cab Sauvignon was the best of the wines we tried, but totally overpriced at $58/bottle. The cab franc was not great, so we settled on the petit verdot. My grilled cheese sandwich (very bready) and tomato soup was ok, as was the chicken and fig sandwich, but we were disappointed it was going to be an hour wait for the pizza. read more

We were on a road trip to Charlottesville when my kids started getting a little bit antsy. Merrie Mill has always been on a list of places to visit so we made a quick (and very scenic detour) for an afternoon of wine tasting and snacks! Honestly, it was the best idea I've had all week. As soon as we stepped inside the whimsical tasting room we knew we were in for a treat! Everywhere you looked, there was something to please the eye. Even the women's bathroom is decked out in antique mirrors and ornate pink wallpaper. We were able to get a table for four inside the tasting room pretty easily. The boy and I got wine tasting flights for ourselves and a couple of snacks for our table to share. The flights came out pretty quickly but as others mentioned the food took a while. Luckily they have an expansive lawn to explore. My kids LOVED running around, playing cornhole, swinging on the floral covered roped swings ("It's just like Encanto!!"), and the vintage carousel ride that actually works (it is a hand crank so you will definitely get your workout in for the day). The outdoor space has tons of striped umbrellas and mismatched furniture that gave everything such a charming feel. I felt like I had gone on vacation in a Wes Anderson film. On to the food and drink: Wine was really wonderful. Our favorites included the rose, white blend, and petit verdot. My husband thought the red blend was akin to licking a leather purse, but I love fine luxury goods so I enjoyed it :) My daughters also really liked the two kids menu items: a warm soft pretzel and a grilled cheese sandwich. Our warm crab and shrimp dip was awesome and came with naan and the sweetest sugar snap peas we've ever had. Truly a wonderful afternoon to spend with friends and family. I would love to come back and take advantage of their wine safari tours or stay in their little pink cottage. read more

A very cute, aesthetically pleasing winery with adorable seating options both indoors and outdoors. The wine was just ok. Service was extremely slow despite it not being very busy--it took almost 20 minutes for our server to bring us the check when we had finished our wine and were ready to go. A little disappointed that during our visit it was quite chilly outside and they sat us next to a door that was left open frequently for servers to go to the outdoor tables. In addition, the fireplace would have been a great use on such a cold and gray day, but none of the workers decided to build a fire in it until late afternoon when we were getting ready to leave. LOVE this winery!!! If you are looking for a winery with a beautiful interior (not just outside) this is it! I was in love with all of the details from the lights to the wallpaper to the furniture. Absolutely gorgeous! I came with 2 friends and we had a 1pm Saturday reservation. The place was pretty busy the entire time we were there with small to large groups and a variety of seating options. Definitely get a reservation! There is a field out front with plenty of parking. Drinks: They have a great flight option that is 5 preselected wines for $25 and you get a lot with that! My friends got the flights, and I just got a glass of the rose ($12). I loved it! Food: We ordered 2 pizzas on gluten free crust and the hummus platter. My friend has a gluten allergy and they were very accommodating- they brought out gluten free bread and regular bread for the hummus on separate plates per our request. The gluten free crust was good too! I loved the white pizza better than the Margherita - they both had tons of flavor with mozzarella and feta cheese. Highly recommend! Visited Merri Mill with family members on a gray afternoon. The venue is whimsical with many nice touches. Several items on the menu were ordered and for the most part I would say the food was above average as well as the price. The hummus plate consists of a large portion of chunky hummus with a tasty blend of vegetable salad in the center (the best part) and a few mini naan which were not enough for the portion of hummus on the plate. The charcuterie board had a nice assortment of cheese and meat, and the chorizo pizza had a heavy amount of cheese for the cheese lovers out there but could have used more chorizo and less cheese. Several in our party had the flights which are pre-selected for you. We're not fans of sweet wine or whites so we opted for a bottle of Cabernet Franc which was very good. If you know what you prefer in Virginia wine I would recommend ordering a bottle rather than ordering the flight. Our first disappointment was how hot it was in the building. The upstairs felt like a sauna. Our second would be our server disappearing for well over 30 minutes after clearing the plates and glasses. We were roasting and ready to leave. It was very busy downstairs so perhaps they were not anticipating how busy they would be between Christmas and New Years and therefore understaffed. read more

Our group of 4 arrived and the hostess was very accommodating even though we didn't have reservations she found a table that wasn't reserved for another 75 minutes. We ordered both a bottle and a flight which were all good. The only issue we had was the server was very lacking. We sat in the covered patio and he didn't come for the first 15 minutes. He never introduced himself. Once ordered the bottle of wine took 30 minutes, flight took 45, and a cup of coffee took 50. Water arrived after he had already closed us out. He never checked on us and seemed zoned out the entire time while serving us. Outside of service (hopefully a one off) would highly recommend visiting if you're in the area. read more

The wine tasting is in a beautiful home screaming with southern charm and they have a fantastic covered and uncovered outdoor patriot overlooking their beautiful property and the mountains. They are dog friendly and our furkids liked being with us. The wine steward (bartender? Server?) was fantastic too. Well traveled and been doing this for years was full of useful information including suggestions for wineries and chateaux for an upcoming trip to French wine country. This seems like a new winery in the area, and for a new winery, this was a fun time! The inside area is a bit whimsical and eclectic, which adds charm. The charcuterie board was quite good and larger than expected - the pickles, olives, and mustard were all very, very good. The chicken salad was ok, a bit dry though. They were out of sandwiches, but those looked good - even though they aren't in house made. The wine itself was hit or miss, some much better than others - but since it is a new winery, I'm not too surprised at this. The wine is very approachable for being young, from the reds to the whites. It was pretty busy, and they might have been a bit understaffed due to the holiday, so the service was a bit slow and not perfect but not terrible either. This is an awesome new place. Only 20 minutes outside of Charlottesville and the views are picturesque and serene. You can see not only the vineyards but the mountains from the tasting room. Inside is beautiful, filled with unique and ornate art. Outside, you can play giant connect four and jenga or a round of cornhole. The setting is absolutely perfect, and after only one visit this already tops my list of wineries in the area. The wine itself is fantastic as well. The flight is well worth it, 5 two ounce pours at only $20. It is presented in adorable small pouring cups, making it easy to share with friends. We loved the house white and red blends. When you order a bottle it's brought to your table in a standing ice bucket, so it keeps cold and doesn't take up space on your table. We didn't get the chance to try any of the snacks, but everything we saw at other tables looked great. We also had amazing service, our server Haley recommended great wines and was really attentive to our table even on a 90 degree Wednesday morning. Make sure this is on your list whether you're on a wine tour, looking for a great day in Charlottesville, or if you just want to drink wine and play games with friends - which is really what we all want at the end of the day! read more

The menu has a little something for everyone as we have some vegetarians and others with no restrictions but it's a small menu. The wines were just meh for me. I'm not a huge oak fan yet our server said ALL were from oak barrels....yet the Rose really didn't have any. It was just a missed opportunity by our server who was racing around trying to manage too many tables for himself alone. It's been some time since visiting - Late August - but wanted to make sure everyone knew how great this fun little vineyard is! First off the decor is amazing. It's so unique and lively. Much different and exciting from traditional wood paneled tasting rooms. As far as the wine go - all fabulous! I had a white flight, my guy had a red and we shared both to sample more of a variety. He hates wines but really enjoyed what was offered here. We started with the charcuterie, then I had the turkey panini, he had the grilled cheese and tomato soup. The food was ok, nothing exciting to be honest. A little overpriced for what was offered. Next time we go we will likely eat prior. But otherwise the place is gorgeous, the grounds are well maintained and our server made us feel like we were old friends of his. (Can't remember his name, older gentleman that wore a portable fan). For new visitors, make sure to dress cool if you go in the warmer months. They had the patio doors open and it was very warm inside of the dining area - could be opposite for the cooler months too. And a tip for the business - if you're going to leave your doors open, take preventive measures to keep flies away from all of your patrons who are dining (inside or out). Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard was one of four stops on our two-day wine tour of Charlottesville. The hostess was wonderful and very patience with our large party of 9. We asked to be moved (3rd times a charm!) as it was too cold for outside seating and we were too large a group to be comfortably seated within the indoor tasting room. We found the perfect balance upstairs in their terrance area that overlooks the vineyard! Our plan was to visit another vineyard but we fell in love with Merrie Mill and ended up staying the entire day to enjoy the wine, food, and live music. The vineyard grounds are a little quirky with an Alice in Wonderland vibe. The wine was amazing! We had an array of wine flights and ended up ordering a bottle of their white blend and Sauvignon Blanc to share. The food was delicious! We ordered sandwiches, a charcuterie board, and the tomato and coconut soup which was to die for!!! Our waitress, Katie, was amazing and took the time to share some of Merrie Mill's history with us. Every inch of this winery was a treat! It's got to be the most vibrant & whimsical winery I've ever been. The furnishings were eclectic & fun & it was truly something our group enjoyed. Our party of 7 was sat at the sofas by the fireplace which was good section to socialize with each other. I would've also loved to have been sat on the 2nd deck of the terrace but maybe for the next visit. Like all other wineries, you can walk in but best to reserve ahead. Oh we also came at like 11/12 so there wasn't much ppl compared to when we were leaving. :::FOOD::: The richly seasoned hummus was interesting but not my favorite. Large or small, their cheese & charcuterie had a lot more cheese & meat than other winery I've ordered from so that was a plus. We really enjoyed the variety & will definitely order them again next visit! :::WINE::: Unlike many other wineries, Merrie Mill doesn't have a big selection of wines. They only have 5 for the flight & the Chardonnay (sep. from the flight). We enjoyed the both reds & the Estate White & took home a bottle of red TH Petit Verdot. Maddie! Maddie! Maddie!! I came here this weekend with my mother-in-law to escape life for a bit, and ended up at Merrie Mill. I have no words to explain how peaceful and wonderful this vineyard was. This was the last stop on our short vacation, and we couldn't be happier. Maddie was phenomenal and tended to our every need. She was extremely busy with the weekend crowd, but still managed to make sure our needs were met. She was an amazing being and added to the already incredible ambiance of the vineyard. My friends and I checked out Merrie Mill on a Sunday afternoon. We had booked a table outside, but there were no heaters and the fire pits cost $50 to sit at. Luckily, they were able to accommodate us inside. After being seated, our service definitely went down hill. It took 20 minutes for anyone to take our order. We ordered three wine flights and the pimento cheese platter. The pimento cheese platter came out quickly but the presentation was really lacking, and we were given plastic silverware. It just didn't match the aesthetic of the vineyard. After that it took another 40 minutes and asking twice to get our wine flights. The wine itself is really good. The flight is really expensive for the area ($20 as opposed to ~$10/$15 at most local vineyards) but it's worth trying. The by the glass prices are half the bottle price, so if you're going to have more than one glass it's definitely worth getting the bottle (you can take it home if you don't finish). We ordered a bottle of the white for our group. Again, it was near impossible to get our server's attention. It would have been easier if we could have just ordered at the bar - having to wait so long definitely hurt the experience. But, I still have 4 stars because it could have been an off day, and the wine is really good. I'd give it another chance, but if the service was equally lacking I'd probably stick to buying bottles to drink at home instead of drinking at the vineyard. read more

My new FAVORITE winery in the Charlottesville. Just 15 minutes from the city, it's really accessible to get to. The inside and outside are equally breathtaking, beautiful and whimsical. This is place is "so stinking cute" in the words of my dear cousin. Love the whimsical interior design. It's like going into an Anthropologie store, but more whimsical than boho. I felt very happy looking around. If you happen to be there when Zuzu's Hot 5 is playing, it is such a fun and magical time. The food is GOOD. Get the turkey brie and cranberry panini. It was more tasty and flavorful than the chicken cheddar and fig panini. The charcuterie platter is great with a nice and plentiful selection. I really am not a wine connoisseur, so I cannot tell you if the wine was good, but it was definitely not bad. The ladies' room is also clean with a very nice, comfortable, and padded changing station with pockets where you can put stuff down while you change your baby as needed. The Nightingale ice cream sandwiches are a real nice treat. They are larger than your typical ice cream sandwich, so I'd recommend sharing with another person, or two or three (seriously). I enjoyed the espresso strawberry shortcake flavors. Service is great. If you're going with a group, they would be happy to cut up the ice cream sandwiches for you and facilitate the sharing of food.
