I have been a patient of Southwest Retina Consultants (SRC) for two years (Aug). I have been very fortunate to have Dr. D. BAHL as my physician. A very caring and professional individual that wants to ensure you get the best advice and care. All the staff from start to finish have been great and it shows on arrival beginning from the front office to the end. If you need Retina assistance ask your primary care doctor to send you to SRC. You will in the long run not regret getting their care. The only drawback is the length of time it takes somedays to go in and out in a very fast time. However, you must always remember that you are not the only person requiring medical attention. All of us have cares that may be quick and others a little longer. Something is not right at this location. The doctors may be good but the office staff is horrible. For 3 week after multiple attempts, referrals and follow-ups and direct calls from insurance to the office and a scheduled appointment (which once they saw the black face) claimed it was not scheduled once I arrived. I have 2 voice messages telling me I am cleared. Yet when I arrived they could not see me (they claimed they did not receive the paperwork). I had copies with me. They could not tell me what was missing, but wait an hour for the billing manger to return. Then told me I would have to pay $600 for treatment. According to my insurance coverage I should only have to pay$50.00. They claimed I need another authorizarion. Yet according to the voice message I have an appointment. According to theIr policy they don't book an appointment unless they have all the paperwork. Lousy service, lousy office management. Are the doctors aware of how their business is being run? Reporting them to the Insurance Association, The American Medical Association and putting in a complaint to BBB. This is ridiculous! In the meantime I may go blind. read more

I was a patient here for 10 years. I started with DR. Trubowitsch and found him incredible. He retired a few years ago. I was then passed to three doctors. One was fired, one did not discuss any issues with patients and the third, falsified records after a mishap with a bad eye injection and inappropriate medicine injected into my eye. I had seen him for 2 years but as soon as I was in crisis over his injection, he cut me out. I tried making an appointment with a different Dr. there and the scheduler said that I had "discharged " myself. and would never be able to make an appointment there again. I knew records were falsified when the tech was explaining to me the occurrences around the bad shot incident. None of the record was true about my interactions with this office. They had constructed a complete narrative record to make it appear as if I was difficult or ignored their outreach and I was not. As they read me the details in their records, I kept responding "that never happened." The Dr was present and then walked out of the room, coming back later he said that he left because he was letting the staff argue it out with me. No argument, just a complete falsification of the bad incident occurrences by someone on staff. After this I was told I had discharged myself from the care of this business. I hadn't. I just said I would not again see Dr. Bahl. So now I have no retina care. SInce they are really the Only retina specialists ( several doctors) I must go to ABQ or Tucson for the nearest. Texas has no way to hold these folks responsible, or any complaint will be ignored or worse, falsified to make you look bad. For example when I went for the follow up after the bad shot, (They would not see me for several days after) i waited until 11:30 AM from an 8am appointment. I went to the desk and asked when I might be seen?. How many were still ahead of me? They record asks like this in their computer as a complaint. Then the Dr. said, why did you complain about your wait time? I said I just asked after waiting 3.5 hours. This of course was part of the set up, trying to upset me enough to react badly. I didn't. All in all I am amazed that this is a medical office (and very costly medicine at that). It appears the role of the Office manager is to orchestrate as above rather than respond to patients in a fair/rational manner. You may never have this happen to you there but beware when they make a mistake. read more

I thought something was a little off with my vision but thought it was just from a swollen face due to dental surgery- but the swelling had gone down. I had an appointment with my primary care physician the next morning just for routine stuff and I mentioned the vision issue. They told me to immediately proceed to my eye doctor. My eye doctor did some tests and immediately referred me to Southwest Retina. Southwest Retina called me right away to schedule me to see a surgeon and prepare for surgery. I went the next morning and met the surgeon; he did some tests and told me that he was going to operate that afternoon. The surgery went smoothly and quickly and I was not in any pain. I still am not in any pain and I'm grateful for my surgeons wonderful bedside manner and caring. I am positive and hopeful for my recovery because I know I am getting the very best of care. read more

It took a few weeks of trying to schedule an appt for my elderly mom, who was referred by her Ophthalmologist to SRC for a procedure needing done asap, due to him seeing some sort of injury and an eye bleed, to finally get scheduled. Little did we know that due to her supplemental medicare insurance, she would need a pre authorization from them for this procedure to be approved. The day prior to her procedure, SRC called my elderly mother to ask her for a referral from her PCP. I called them and they were shocked that SRC was asking her physician's office for a referral the day before the appt. They were gladly able to provide her with one asap, and early this morning we walk in thinking she'd get her needed eye procedure done, but no, of course not! The lady at the desk took a while on the phone and computer and when she came back stated so matter of factly, that the PCP office was supposed to login through her Cigna portal to get a Pre- authorization and that because they we not provided with that, we needed to reschedule since pre auths take roughly 2-3 weeks for approval!! The PCP office staff were shocked because SRC never once reached out to them stating they ever needed a referral or a pre authorization from them. They weren't even aware she was having a retinal procedure done until the day before! Now who dropped the ball?!?! They, with no shame, asked an elderly lady to retrieve what was needed 1day prior to her surgical procedure! Why was an appt ever scheduled by them without the documents needed for this to take place?! The minute they saw what insurance my mom had, and the fact that her HMO required these things, they should have been making the needed requests and calls to get things done! I am escalating this even further because I think I now need to take my mom to an ER to be seen because her vision and the blurriness in that eye is getting worse by the day, not to mention the constant watering. That is the reason for the urgency, but apparently not urgent enough for Southwest Retina Consultants at the Curie DR. location to do things in a timely and proper manner! read more

They are the only location in the area for diabetic retinopathy. The doctors are decent but the office staff takes advantage of it. They force patients into unnecessary appointments for the money by telling them they would have to start the medical procedures over if they miss one appointment, especiallyif you have good insurance. They charge more than the insurance allows. The wait time is usually four hours or more. Unfortunately the patients don't have any alternatives, so they are forced to deal with the manipulative and shoddy office management. read more

Where do i begin... not a good experience .HORRIBLE bedside manners the Dr. was so negative when he was talking about the surgery. Then the on call Dr. was very rushed and unprofessional was in the room about 5min. As well as his assistant was rude and felt like she was bothered to answer a simple question. Medication error, both pharmacy and myself tried calling multiple times only to get no answers and finally when they did answer the on call answering service we received rude operator instructing us not to be calling and was also rude to the pharmacist. You have to understand that this is one of three offices in the El Paso area that offer this treatment. They're servicing the entire area. I appreciate all the efforts by the staff at managing a high level volume of patients. The office is in an older building in the medical center, so the patient flow may seem a little awkward. The staff are courteous. Haven't had a bad experience. I trust the doctor & nurse. There are many opportunities for improvement and perhaps whoever owns Southwest Retina Consultants can open a new clinic that would benefit all those involved. Staff and Patients. A visit here requires patience and empathy. They took care of my loved one and I'm thankful for that. read more

this place does not respect your time. find another clinic. the professionalism and accountability is lacking. If I had the choice to go somewhere else, I would. simply put. the other retina place I was being seen at in Hawai'i was miles better than this place. plenty of us are in the waiting room for well over an hour, and we all heard the front desk allow a patient with a later scheduled appointment get put in front of us, and get seen earlier. one patient who had been waiting for over an hour talked to the front desk about that incident and they tried to claim it's all the "back office" fault, when the front desk staff is clearly who let that incident happen. the front desk staff then goes on to claim that the back office is "holding" new patients??? What does this even mean?? we've all been here OVER an hour at this point with no update, no dilated eyes, no progress. not a professional clinic, and I can say that with confidence having been to many other retina facilities in other states. read more

If I could give this place a zero that would be too much. The staff is RUDE! The majority of the patients are elderly and watching the staff interact with them absolutely broke my heart. No compassion, no human decency, no respect. I was with my father who is wheel chair bound and they would not lift one finger to help me move him around such a small building that is PACKED to the max. I understand they serve a large are of people BUT you are PAID to do the damn job. DO IT RIGHT AND SHOW SOME COMPASSION! this place is disgusting. I was visiting New Mexico last month when I experienced a PVD with hemorrhage, an urgent medical condition. I am grateful for the excellent care that I received from Southwest Retina Consultants. The clinic serves many patients because it covers a huge portion of the state, but it does so with a well thought-out plan that moves patients along quickly and efficiently. The staff were calm, kind and professional. Knowing that I was in great hands with Dr. Cuthbertson and his team did much to ease my mind until I returned home to Wisconsin. read more

There is no doubt that the doctors are competent but the front staff needs a lesson in customer care. Part of the problem is that they are the ONLY clinic to manage macular degenerative disease. That doesn't give them a license to treat patients with so little sensitivity. They don't have a priority plan for patients that were already treated and are suffering any kind of pain. They don't seem to be aware that they are dealing with elderly patients who require more patience that most. It is literally like an assembly line in the office and patients are so overbooked that it usually takes almost 2 hours to even see the doctor. That means that any kind of additional care usually ends up at the ER- which takes even more time away from the normal appointments. Worry less about the bottom line and get your clinic more doctors. it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. read more

I needed a new retina specialist after the tragic loss of my ophthalmologist several years ago. I was referred to the Southwest Retina Consultants when my retina detached for the third time. Dr. Bahl handled my case in a very professional manner. He was successful in repairing the detachment and basically saved my vision. He has good bed-side manners and great technical skills. The staff at the Curie location are also very professional. They are polite and treat patients respectfully. read more

The front desk, Victoria, could be more professional. I called to schedule an appointment for my client, and they first said they needed a referral from the optometrist. The fax number she provided was not working. I called again to see if there was another method I could send the referral, and Victoria was snappy and rushed to provide me with information. Once I could fax the referral, I called back again to schedule an appointment for my client, and Victoria said, "oh, you need to send demographics, address, and insurance." I wished she had told me this in the beginning to fax the complete package. I finally faxed the whole package and called again, minding waiting in the line for 8 min, then they hung up on me. I called again for the seventh time, and they had me on hold for over 20min. This is ridiculous to schedule an appointment. I'm a case worker, and I've never encountered this type of customer service in the medical division. read more

This is obviously the only game in town. I have been a patient for over a year and if there were any other place to go, I would. They lack the waiting room until there is no seating...you feel like a herd of cows. The staff is short tempered and rushed. You must wear a mask and the first thing they do is tape it to your face across your nose and on your cheeks. When you are finished being seen, which takes about 5 minutes after an hour wait in a room filled with coughing people nearly sitting in your lap...you have trouble seeing. Your eyes have been dilated .... And often the elevators are out. So navigating the stairways while half blind is tricky in itself. There is no care for the patient in this place, you are just $$$ to them...the lack of concern for the patient is obvious. Once you remove the tape from your face, be prepared to lose some skin along with it. I always cream my face before going so it's not as bad. I hate going there, absolutely hate it. I dont understand how inconsiderate and disrespectful the clinic is. Most of the patients are elder people and they are vulnerable, unsure of whats going on. They are not allowed to go in with a family member. Even when that family member has power of attorney. Even when patient request having someone with them. If the excuse is Covid. There are protocals to clean their office. Having a person that understands whats going on and understand it is part of patient care. Moral support is extremely important for our elder. I truly dont understand how not allowing someone with a patient makes it a better care. In my personal care, its the patients choice to have a person with them for moral and cognitive support. I have power of attorney and still they tell me to step outside. Maybe drs. Are forgeting they work for the patient not the other way around. And quite honest this dont have nothing to do with covid. Since, their offices are not very cleaned and they dont even have hand sanitizers at the lobby. If you care for your loved one ask to be with them and be their moral support. read more

This place lacks ethical and professional tact. I was treated very poorly by the office staff. Office staff was very incompetent. I was constantly asked what my birth date was as I was being bounced between one nurse to another. The nurse who did my intake put eye drops in my eyes and I was sitting in a chair against the wall and she didn't even move my chair out a little bit to put the eye drops in and it made it excessively difficult for me to lean my head back. When the doctor discussed his findings to me the nurse remained in the room which I didn't authorized therefore, my confidentiality was breached. read more

DINESH BAHL is one of the most proficient, professional, courteous specialists I have ever encountered. I have observed him in action for the past three months and there is nothing about your eye he cannot identify, discuss, and cure. Since his reputation is well known, he is incredibly busy, as is this entire office. If one of the doctors is unavailable, another fills in with seamless professionalism. There may be other good eye surgeons out there, but I feel Dr. Bahl is the best! I mean, I don't wish anyone to have eye problems, but as we age, it might be inevitable, so why not go to the best? Dr. Metrikin is knowledgeable and friendly. His staff from the office manager to his minions I would fire in 10 seconds . They have very bad scheduling practices.
