Wonderful friendly Japanese staff and the sushi chefs make delicious sushi and salmon carpaccio! The miso soup and edamame is so perfect too! We had the salmon avocado roll and the spider roll and it was delicious! Great view of the famous Bondi Beach across the street! We love it here and can't wait to come back for dinner!!! Yummy! Obviously the proximity to Bondi Beach could mean touristy, expensive food, but Soy is so much better than that. Even though the restaurant sign is also kinda cheesy, don't let hat steer you away! The decor in Soy says something completely different than the sign. Its elegant and cool. It's also really tiny--only about 14 or so tables of twos or fours, but there is big flavor here. We had eggplant degaku and two rolls and it was a comfortable amount of food for two. The spicy tuna roll is awesome. I'm used to a roll with tuna that's more like a paste mixed with the spicy sauce. Here, it was pieces of raw tuna inside the roll, topped with avocado on the rice, and the spice was the sauce on the very top. It was different and my favorite roll we had. Can't beat the setting either--it's right on the beach and offers a cool breeze through the restaurant in the evenings. Definitely worth a try. Enjoy! read more

The space was clean looking, the service was friendly and genuine, and the food was tasty. I found that there was limited variety in their rolls, but the one I ordered, the popcorn shrimp roll was delicious. I wasn't especially hungry (I may have devoured a package of Tim Tams before arriving) but I though that this 8 piece roll and a bowl of miso soup was definitely satisfying. If I had my usual appetite I probably would have ordered another roll or something else on the menu. Definitely a cute date worthy space to eat in and the food is good so you wouldn't be disappointed doing takeaway either! read more

This place is intimate and lively. Their salmon sashimi and tempura prawn roll were delicious! I saw reviews on the Aburi roll and didn't expect it to be so rich but it was delicious and I would order all three again! Paired perfect with a glass of their organic Sauvignon Blanc and if I had enough room for dessert I would've tried their green tea ice cream. Great place for a dinner date but the tables are super close to each other so that could get awkward but also a great place for a group of friends if you make reservations because it's not a huge restaurant. Went here because I heard it has good gluten free options. Asked waitress if there were GF options or GF menu when we were seated. She explained some, but it wasn't totally clear (restaurant was loud) so I asked again when she came back. I tried to order two sushi rolls and specifically asked if I could have them gluten free or if there would be a problem. She looked like she thought about it for awhile and then said it was OK. When the food arrived, she brought normal soy sauce which was a red flag. We asked some wait staff if they could double check if my food was made with normal soy sauce. It was. Waitress came back and said that yes, the food has gluten in it. I was confused, because I had very specifically asked if they could do it without gluten and I made clear that I cannot have it. She seemed like she didn't remember me asking about gluten or didn't care why I had been asking about gluten while ordering. She then explained that they could really only do like two items on the menu gluten free so we ended up leaving hungry. I didn't really trust them after she said it would be OK and then just served me a bunch of gluten-laden food. The service here is great, but I cannot say the same for the food. I ordered the crab cream croquette, 6 pieces of random sashimi, and the volcano roll. I entered with hopes of having a wonderful dinner, but left with bitter disappointment. The first sign was of trouble was the crab cream croquette. The crab cream croquette was not fully cooked. The center of the croquette was still cold. When I told the waiter of the issue it was quickly replaced. The sashimi was nothing too special. I have had better in my experience although it was not that expensive. I ordered the volcano roll because it was on their specialty menu. I expected much better from their specialty. The volcano roll was quite possibly the worst roll I have ever had. I knew I had gone to the wrong place when I first saw the roll. The roll looked disgusting it looked like a mess; however, I was hoping for the ladder. It was the disgusting mess of a roll when I took a bite. The seaweed of the roll was wet and it ruined the roll. What greatly annoyed was the fact that they used imitation crab and still charged me $23 for it. This was my first experience at the restaurant and it will be the only one at it. read more
