The fried chicken is lightly battered and has a strong soy sauce flavor, topped with a layer of mayo. While the slightly undersized pieces have just came out from the fryer, the exterior barely have any crisp and is quite oily, while the interior is a little overcooked. The beef, different from its thick and succulent appearance on the menu, is overcooked and stringy. However, the flavoring on point and the topped spring onions are cut perfectly. Nothing special about the salad, and the same for the self-served takoyaki-on-a-skewer and cold tofu with sliced spring onions. The self-serve matcha milk was a pleasant surprise, with the right level of sugar and bitterness, only lacking some creaminess.

This looked like a generic Japanese place, like the ones you find in English speaking countries. Yelp and other apps seem to recommend it, and I walked in suspiciously. Turns out, it was great! They advertised wagyu beef grilled on pink Himalayan salt, and that was what we got. It turned out to be a thick slab of salt on a gas stove, where you could grill the wagyu and veggies on the salt itself. Since the salt provides the flavour, you don't have to add extra seasoning to the food grilled on it - it made everything taste delicious. The beef was also of good quality and had fabulous marbling. We also got agedashi tofu and some grilled salmon. The tofu were so-so, but the salmon was so delicious and presented very nicely with vegetables. Service was so-so, but the prices were great since the US dollar was strong (woohoo), and I think that was the cheapest quality wagyu I've had in a restaurant. I still haven't seen places in the US that does the salt grill thing. I wish I could go back and have this again!

The price runs on the more expensive side but it did reflect the quality and taste so I didn't feel like I was ripped off. But then again I wasn't the one paying. I don't think I'll rush back with that kind of price but if you don't have to worry about the moolah the it's a great Japanese place to go.

The owner was there and he actually makes the sushi - dressed in his business shirt and little hat he looked really cute. He also impressed us by clearing tables - not many owners would do that when they have staff to do it. The food is sublime: if you try nothing else, try the soft shelled crab roll (10 pieces). The way it is presented is an absolute work of art. They serve both hot and cold meals, udon soup, noodles as well as a lot of salads - great with the hot weather. West Ryde is not exactly a hot spot for restaurants but maybe Tatsuya will change that.

They were happy to oblige our request to only have grilled salmon and grilled scallop when we ordered their grilled sushi set. The rice meals are delicious and good value for money, the servings are plentiful. My favourites are the chicken teriyaki, the chicken is swimming in their sweet teriyaki sauce and cooked tenderly, and the cheese katsu which is a delight for someone who loves cheese as much as I do. You can BYO but they will charge a corkage fee for each wine glass. They opened a second branch in Artarmon, which can only mean business is good. Our party enjoyed a range of dishes (meat, fish & vegetable), and but I loved the vegan offerings: Nasu Dengaku and Wafu salad (tasty!!!) Will definitely be back soon :) Family friendly? The BBQ Wagyu main was a good size however it does not come with any sides like rice or miso. It was lovely and tender and just yum. But we weren't served the rice or miso (would have been too full anyway) but a little disappointed we didn't get what was promised. Udon tasted authentic, the prawn inside the tempura shell was fresh and cooked well, loved the runny egg yolk and large mushrooms. Soup base was light and tasted good. I ended up slurping all the soup, even though I don't normally eat the soup in noodle dishes. The dessert was one small scoop of black sesame ice cream. The ice cream was served inside a ramekin, and the ramekin and ice cream was frozen and ice cream had ice shavings around it. I'm pretty sure they made it more than a week ago and froze it. Didn't taste fresh, and was very dry and hard. I pierced my spoon into the ice cream and a small piece came out. Tasted very frozen, hard, and could taste the freezer taste. I didn't have any more.
