Honestly I love Hannah. She gets 5 stars from me. She is kind and talented when it comes to nails. However, there have been around 3 occasions on which another worker has done my nails and I have always been disappointed. Today I got a manicure and the person began by commenting on how short my nails were, which immediately made me self conscious. She then proceeded to inadequately push down my cuticles. Two of my nails are literally half painted because she didn't even push down the cuticles at all. read more

I've been coming here for almost a year and have been loving it but last time I went in for a gel manicure/regular pedicure, it became clear that it is not consistently high quality performance. Here's why 1) I waited 20 mins to get seated for the pedicure on a week night at 5:30. I called ahead and they told me to arrive...but would appreciate it if they could let me know there will be a wait so I can evaluate whether this fits within my schedule for that evening? 2) The lady performing the manicure did not pay attention to cleaning up the cuticles at all, resulting in a poorly painted manicure. She forgot to add top coat to my nails and started scrubbing with alcohol (all of the cotton rubbed off and got stuck to my nails). 3) My gel manicure that usually lasts up to 3-4 weeks is starting to peel after 4 days and I'm about to go on a trip, hoping this would last through that (not holding my breath). Point being - go, but it'll be a real hit or a terrible miss. Inconsistent service and unreliable quality. read more

I'm not going to lie; I have not tried a lot of nail salons since I've moved to the Bay Area last summer. With that being said, as soon as Kim worked her magic on my nails, there was no need for me to search elsewhere. I don't know why I didn't write this review sooner. It's well overdue. Kim does a fantastic job and she is consistent. But this visit is what really did it for me. The most unpleasant customer came into the shop today. She rudely spoke AT Kim and asked questions in a manner that was extremely degrading, without even making eye contact or acknowledging the responses she was provided with. I know how sweet Kim is to every customer she interacts with, so being conscious of that made it especially difficult to sit back and observe what was going on. Thankfully, the customer left soon (without getting her nails done, but not without tormenting Kim for several minutes) and everyone in the shop was grateful for that. But of greatest significance is the fact that Kim still tried to cater to her and treated her with respect albeit lacking it in return. This is not to mention that Kim fits me in her busy schedule (she works every single day and stays very occupied at work) and will stay more than an hour late if she needs to. Every service from every person is exceptional here, so go. I just needed to give Kim the recognition that is well-deserved. read more

I know this is long, but it could definitely be worth the read :) Had an acrylic full set done and finished at a different salon in Berkeley only 10 minutes before I came to Spa Nails and Hair. The technician at the other salon had had amazing reviews and trusted customers and a lot of people spoke very highly of them so when seeing that, I didn't look any further believing I would be happy with the finished product and did a walk in right then. To make it simple, the finished product was absolutely terrible. There were smudges on multiple nails, one of the thumbs was cut shorter than the other, the pointer finger on one of my hands was noticeably crooked and hastily put on without care, the polish job was uneven and clumpy and in some spots there wasn't any polish at all. When I sat down the technician roughly grabbed my hands and started filing them, rushing the entire time and going over my skin causing some of the cuticles on a few of my fingers to be in a lot of pain and felt like the skin had been scraped off. When I asked the technician to alter the shape and length of the nail, they seemed extremely irritated and unhappy that I was even talking to them. They were very impatient while I was picking a color and I kept apologizing because I felt as though I was wasting their time. Because I was rushing, I ended up picking a color I did not like at all, but because I felt as thought they would get mad at me, I didn't say anything because they had already painted my first hand and were onto the second. I'm not sure if this is common in other nail salons, but I feel as though other times I've gotten my fingers or toes done, they've always done a test on one of my fingers to make sure I liked the color and if not, then they would let me choose another. I don't often get my nails done and have only gotten acrylics once and it was over two years ago and am quite an amateur to all this and not confrontational at all so I wasn't able to speak up and say I was unhappy with them and rather paid, said thank you, and left. The second I left, I immediately looked up another nail salon to see if someone could help fix the absolute train wreck that was my nails. I then found Spa Nails and Hair. I called them right then and asked if they could help and the woman on the phone immediately said yes and I was there within 10 minutes. The second I walked through the door, I was greeted by all the women that work there with sweet smiles and a warm welcome. The woman I spoke to on the phone (I'm so sad I didn't catch her name because she was absolutely amazing and so kind, but I think it might have been Kim due to the other reviews as they described the woman who helped me very well) had me sit down and asked me to describe what was wrong and I showed her my nails and she immediately went to work, but not in a rushed way and only after offering me some tea or water. She took off the horrible color I had on, and when I asked if she could change the shape because I just wasn't at all happy with it, she did it with a smile and I didn't feel as though I was bothering her with requesting it whatsoever. I picked a color from their array of colors you can decide from that was more similar to the color of the nails photo I had shown the technician at the first salon but then she asked me to show her the photo and after taking a quick look she said I can do that, no problem, and did exactly that, not using the color I had just chosen but rather her own mixture that was perfect. Her attention to detail was impeccable and I completely felt like she was happy to help and wanted to take care of me so that I would leave happy. She didn't once seem upset or irritated if I asked her a question or wanted to change something, and I am just so grateful for her warmth and kindness which helped me relax and feel comfortable through all of it. Pros: everything. An amazing salon with amazing women, and I will without a doubt be coming back here if I decide I want to make my hands look pretty again in the future. I didn't take any pictures of the first set of nails from the first salon because it was just so awful to look at, I didn't want any evidence it had happened. But of course I took photos of the finished product from Spa Nails and Hair because I want to show these off to anyone and everyone because they are exactly what I wanted, maybe even better, and downright beautiful. I also added the photo I showed her to show how perfect she matched the color on my nails with the color in the photo. I hope this helps anyone who's unsure because I don't ever make reviews about anywhere but felt obligated to leave one about here because I left with a huge smile and I am just so, so thankful. Very pricey was disappointed when I had to pay for a simple set of acrylics for $80. Never again.

I've actually never gotten a full on pedicure before, but but my feet were getting way too calloused I had to do something about it. I walked-in around 12:30pm Friday afternoon and they asked me to come back in another hour since they were busy. When I did, they accommodated me right away. I got the Mango pedicure, and it was AMAZING. First of all, they have massage chairs, so I got to enjoy that while my feet were getting pampered. I soaked my feet for a while, then this guy helped me trim and clean up my toes. He was also helping another customer, so after another technician (her name was Tu An, I believe) was free, she helped me for the remainder of the pedicure. Tu An was really detailed, taking care of every toe. The order of the services provided were as followed: a salt scrub was applied to my calves and feet, callouses were scrubbed off from the soles of my feet, warm lotion was rubbed onto my calves and feet and covered with hot towels, and a massage was given on my calves and feet while hot stones were strapped to my soles. Major points: Tu An scrubbed really hard, so most of my callouses came off. I was really happy that I could finally see the pinks of my soles again. I just have to maintain my feet now with lotion. They said that the massage would be 15 min, and it was really 15 min of diligent massaging. I almost fell asleep from how good it felt. After all that, she helped me choose a color for the nail polish (I was deciding between three), and she applied it on very carefully and cleanly. I was very satisfied with it when my friends that night asked how I did my nails so nicely. The whole thing came out to be $42 without tip, since I get $2 off if I pay with cash. It is admittedly a little pricey for a college student, but considering how the whole thing took more than a 1.5 hours, and how nice they were the whole time, I would definitely go back in the future. Tu An was a major plus too. 10/10 recommend. read more

I had an appointment for 2 manicures and 1 pedicure at 2 pm. Walked in at 2:15, the lady verbally confirmed that we were there for 2 mani's and 1 pedi. I had to wait a half hour to be helped with my pedicure, while my friend waited an hour for her manicure. After my pedicure I was left sitting in the chair for another 30 minutes, and a man who had walked in was helped before me (who had also been waiting about 30 minutes), even though I was still waiting. I spoke up and the same woman as earlier said she forgot that I also wanted a manicure. By that time it had been about 2 hours and I didn't have time to wait longer (as they were all busy with other customers) so I left. I understand if they are busy and if there's a wait, but then they shouldn't have scheduled my appointment and made me wait. It was a huge waste of my time, and now I still need to get a manicure. I've had several great pedicures here and during my last one, I commented that the leg and foot massage was particularly good. Since I used to be a massage therapist I notice these things. Julie, the practitioner, told me it was because she was trained in face massage and right now they have a 10% discount. I booked right away and was not disappointed. It was one of the most thorough facials I've ever had (and I've had a lot). So many potions and lotions with steam and then cold massagers and light and I don't know what else. I'm usually more curious but I was so relaxed julie thought I was sleeping, but I didn't want to miss the endless massage with every product. I can be very sensitive to products but they all felt great and smelled good too. Very delicate scents. My skin looked visibly different right after and still does. I will definitely be back. I am not a salon guy, but this is my one exception: I go here to get a pedicure every month or so, because I have some foot problems I am trying to keep under control and, if I'm being honest, I do not do a great job of cutting my own toe nails either, if left to my own devices. Terrible experience. They falsely advertise a student discount, then say it "ended already." I went in asking for an ombré French. Apparently, they forgot that's what I wanted, so they put clear acrylic on me, then when I said "Looks like you can't do it anymore" Kim insisted that she could and did this monstrosity. Called in 3 days after my initial manicure (2 days after I posted the review) asking to have my nails fixed. I was greeted by Kim (yes, the one who is quite famous in the reviews) who redid my nails. The process was pretty fast and my nails came out much nicer but I'm not really sure if I will go back since the first time was so bad. I gave a better rating because they redid my nails without question which was nice but the fact that I had to come back a second time to get it done right is kinda disappointing.
