Hire someone else. I've never left a yelp review before, but felt like I should because of this experience. I hired Steve because he gave me the most reasonable quote but you get what you pay for. I asked Steve if he would do two coats of paint and he said this type of paint didn't need that. I figured I would trust him and see what it would look like at the end. If you're OK with a sloppy job and not looking at the details, then hire him. Otherwise, if you want the job to be done perfectly the first time I would go with someone else. At the end, he said let me know what you think. I walked around my apartment and he followed me over my shoulder, watching everything I was looking at. The few things I noticed quickly I pointed out to him and he rolled his eyes and he said, "really? That's not a big deal." There was a large mark on my closet door that I pointed out to him and he said "I didn't do that that must've been you" but he wouldn't fix it because he said I messed that up. I really didn't know what to do at that point. He was following my every movement so I felt pressure to just say it was fine because I didn't like how he handled my feedback. After he left, I inspected the place more thoroughly and found more issues. For example, I saw some of the lighter color coming through when he painted a darker color for me. Or he painted hairs in the fresh paint. I decided to try to fix the mark on the closet door on my own because he wouldn't. Later when he texted checking in, I sent him a picture of the door and said I've been trying to fix this but not sure how. He then called me and berated me saying, "I can't believe you messed up my work especially when it was wet paint. You shouldn't have done that." He was rude and aggressive to me on the phone so I said "please stop lecturing me" and he said he would think about what to do with the door. When he texted a few days later saying he could come over to see what he could do about the door I said, "is it possible you could add a second coat of paint on some walls and fix some other places because I've found some issues?" He then insisted on a phone call where he was extremely mad and said "in my 30 years of painting, I've never had so many complaints from someone. I have no idea what you're talking about. You said it was fine when I was over there on my last day." When I pointed out that I didn't feel comfortable giving him feedback because of how he followed me and how he responded to my critique, he said, "well that was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard." He started yelling at me and saying how dare I mess up his "work" even though it's my apartment and he was the one who didn't paint it properly. I ended the phone call because I felt uncomfortable. He offered to come over and check it out the next day however, I really didn't feel comfortable given how negatively he responded to my feedback. I told him not to come over and now I have to hire someone else to fix his work. I don't want someone providing a service in my home to make me feel uncomfortable, so I'd rather that he would've offered money back and apologized. I've never dealt with someone who was so disrespectful and rude. You can see the picture speak for themselves. read more

There are 6 factors I require of a sub-contractor. First, is communication. Second, is timeliness - showing up on time. Third is, Showing Proficiency, Doing Excellent Work. Forth is: Being Expeditious. Fifth is being clean. Sixth is: Exceptionalism. I give Steve 5 out of 5 Stars in total (which is 5 Stars for each factor). Working with Steve was straightforward and trouble free. We texted AND Spoke on the phone settling on a fair price, an arrival time and estimated job completion time. Steve showed up on time, his work was Perfect; he was the most efficient and clean sub-contractor I have ever worked with. (I was a Construction Manager in my working life, and I have worked with over a hundred different subs over 30 years). Most important: Steve was exceptional. The wallpaper I chose was a very dark grey. Steve advised and painted the wall in a dark grey so that no seams would show. I stated the work was perfect because All the Patterns aligned perfectly and no seams showed. Finally, Steve has personality, the creativity, skill and flair of an artist. Excellent experience with Steve G.! I found Steve while searching on Yelp for a painter for my apartment. To make a long story short, I moved into a place that had not had any upkeep for a very, VERY, long time (I think at least 20 years - maybe even longer). From the very beginning, Steve was very responsive. He responded to my e-mail within I think 18 hours of me sending it and was quite helpful on the phone. He gave me some overall guidance regarding what all had to be done with the work, along with different options of what needed to be done. A couple other points: 1. HE ACTUALLY COMES ON TIME. I know that sounds trivial. But you would be surprised as to how many contractors do not. Over the past couple months, there has been more than once situation in which I had to move around work meetings to accommodate a contractor... who then showed up 2 hours late. Very annoying. Needless to say, I never had that issue with Steve. 2. His pricing is competitive. 3. He works quickly and efficiently. He was done with the painting much faster than I had anticipated. 4. The final work product is quite nice. After he finished painting it, the apartment looked great and almost brand new. 5. He worked around my schedule. There were a couple things I had to do involving plaster, wallpaper removal, and a plumbing job that was completely unexpected (the plumbers had to remove a piece of the bathroom wall to install shutoff valves - this was not something I was anticipating and drastically expanded the scope of the renovation/repair work I was planning). Steve is a phenomenal problem solver and expert in design. I say this because I not only needed to paint my apartment, but definitely needed a thought partner in the process and Steve supported me to make decisions and offered suggestions throughout the whole process!
