I…read morewent after hours for a indie film thingy, I would say it was very unorganized, they said door opening at 6 PM, but they let people wait in line to get photographer took pictures for marketing purposes. The catering company also there to serve people food, but then they made people buy their own stuffs and put all the free food away for themselves, we never heard of the food again. Show started at 7:30 PM, they just made people hanging out in the lobby, only a certain amount, the rest still have to wait outside in the cold, no food were served what so ever, the catering company put out the food, then the organizer boxed them and promised it will be ready for everyone after the show. Then the problem with seatings, they really don't know how to seat people, so they randomly picked people and put them to whatever seats available, then everyone else had to stand in the back the entire time. Finally the technical issue, sound and video went out of sync, camera and microphone didn't work half of the time. I understand this is low budget indie blah blah blah, but you really wasted everyone time, and you didn't get your act together. You should have done sound check and rehearsed. By the time they couldn't figure out how to fix the problem, they just let the rest of the show went on, then apologized. There was no free food, and if you wanted to buy food, the catering truck also gone. Really Bread & Salt, you need to allow more quality events to be in your venue. Please!

That said I gotta give the artists, staff, and organization of most of these events a "could be better"/2 stars as they are frequently rude -- one made a mean comment about me being a man, the art exhibits are often not very well curated, and overall the "experiences" and entrance/logistics are often very unclear, clunky, prone to oversights, and unorganized. I see from other reviews (Gary's) that this is not an infrequent occurrence. Still, I think this space is great, and depending on who organizes the event, it can be fun, but it's totally hit or miss.

We came back again because they were advertising their free admission online. What better pastime activity than to be viewing some great watercolor art by local artists. This spot is in Liberty Station, which is in general a hub surrounded by so many amazing things to view and see. This is a great free spot to go to in the afternoon (I believe they are only open 11am-3pm most days). You can park next to the building or in their lots. Planes fly overhead pretty often since you're near the airport. Inside, there's usually an activity you can do where you can cast a vote to which pieces are your top ones. You can see which pieces have the honor of being first place with the badges. The people at the front desk are always incredibly friendly and welcoming. You can spend a good 15 minutes here to take a look at each piece!

We weren't initially going to go in but the people at the front desk beckoned us in and with a warm smile and the word "free" we decided to come in. It was much bigger than we thought. Ended up spending about 40 minutes here as we looked at and immersed ourselves with the international art pieces that were on display this month. Every month there's a new exhibit and a competition (you get to vote for your favorite piece on a slip of paper and caste your vote in a box in the front of the business). There's two ish rooms with pieces on the dividers and on the walls. It's bright and airy place. Pieces are available for purchase and they range from 500 dollars up to 3k and more.

I don't want to meddle but this artwork is so good that it is worthy of a nod from those who are "long in the tooth" and "well endowed" in the wallet from La Jolla, Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe. They feature local and region artists, producing a full calendar of events, both on site and in other venues. Each art show is a party but the main focus is the art. They take very good care of the work and their main goal is to showcase the art in the best possible light (figuratively and literally.) They make sure they study each piece so that they can approach each potential buyer with the knowledge needed to present the piece. I can speak from personal experience as I arrived at the gallery early to drop off my artwork, Johnny was training an intern. She had flash cards and she was quized on each piece. That is care and dedication that I appreciate as both a patron and an artist! A few weeks later, I was presented a check of my pieces that they were able to sell. Both owners and curators are WONDERFUL people- amicable, down-to-earth, friendly. I'm definitely a fan of Thumbprint Gallery!

Cosmopolitan Art often time showcases plein air art, and a lot of the artists paint portraits that feature La Jolla. La Jolla is pretty and all, but the I don't see why anyone would drop a grand for a piece of art that looks like every other water color ever done. I like leaving a gallery feeling inspired, but I thought the ho-hum art the Cosmopolitan Gallery lacked creativity and I thought almost all of the work was irreverent.
