This is a hidden gem! My roommate, her 15 month old son and I came here for brunch on Sunday in March. It is such an amazing experience. I wish I would have been coming to these monthly! The staff was amazing! Be sure to make your reservations online or by calling the number on the NavylifeSW website. I'm not sure if they take walk ins. They had a table set up/assigned to us prior to our arrival. There was an omelet station, crepe station, fruit and pastries table that also had shrimp cocktails. The other table had mashed potatoes, turkey, ham, gravy and beans. I ate too much and didn't make it to the dessert table, but it looked like a lot of cheesecake and different types of cakes and cookies. It was $21.95 per adult. I'm not quite sure how much the children are, but I believe they're free under 3. The view alone was worth it. My husband and I just had our wedding here. It's a very beautiful venue, and fairly priced, but does come with a lot of rules so be sure to follow that in the contract. A big disappointment for us was the morning of we still saw bird poop all over the deck. No one was responding to us, therefore we couldn't get anyone from the venue to clean it (I asked prior when touring the venue and was told it would be cleaned day of). As it got closer to set up time I had no choice but to ask my husbands groomsmen, my brothers, and our cousins to go buy mops and scrub the deck. Not to mention the venue coordinator for the day of didn't introduce herself until we were eating dinner during our reception, and never actually gave us her name. Sitting at the waters edge between Ballast Point and Point Loma, this is a one-star buffet with a five-star view. Recent change in operator has not been an improvement. Gone are the Eggs Benedict and a second hot entrée option. Omelet station is pretty basic The poached salmon is picked over by 11:30 am and not replaced. There were no bagels or savory breads -- only sweets and "croissants" that looked and tasted like Pilsbury crescent rolls. Desserts were generally good. OVERALL: This venue was stunningly beautiful, and absolutely added to the perfection of our wedding. They renovated the venue in May 2015, so everything was new, clean and modern. There is literally no other venue in San Diego that is ON THE OCEAN, so we had unbelievable views and a beautiful sunset. This venue was admired by San Diegans and out-of-town guests alike. BUDGET: There is no way we could have found a more beautiful, oceanfront venue for the price we paid here! Because we purchased a food package (vs. doing a la carte), we paid a total of $700 for the ceremony/reception venue. Additionally, there were food packages as low as ~$45 a head. On top of the already low prices, because it is on a naval base, there is no tax! And, if you are active-duty military, you get a 10% discount on food! FOOD: You have to use Admiral Kidd Catering, and unfortunately the food is not the selling point of the venue . In order to taste the food, you can attend one of 4 catering fairs a year. We went expecting a modern catering company with unique food options (like we have seen at many recent weddings), but the options were VERY traditional and frankly, not to our standards (we are foodies). BUT, we loved the view of the venue and were very impressed by the cost, so we didn't let the food bother us too much. We ordered the simplest options we could find (steak/salmon, potatoes and green beans), and we were surprised on our wedding day...the food was well prepared and tastey and guests seemed to enjoy it! SERVICE: Because this is a military venue, do not expect superb service from your catering manager. I had so many questions while I was prepping months before the wedding, and unfortunately, to get anything answered, you really have to attend the catering fair, where the catering managers are available to address your questions. It was nearly impossible to get a hold of our catering manager until we were about a month out from the wedding. She ended up being very sweet when we sat with her to finalize reception details, and she even threw in a few things for free. The day of the wedding, the service was amazing and the staff was very accommodating. SECURITY: Because your guests will be accessing a military base, you have to provide a list of first and last names of all your guests to base security prior to the wedding. Additionally, all of your vendors have to get background checks prior to accessing base. Admiral Kidd Catering DOES NOT help with this, nor do they really have their facts straight about this process (it's the navy! don't expect these departments to talk to each other!). If you have questions, go to the base security office and ask them your questions directly. They are VERY helpful! OTHER: - Get extra bartenders if you have an open bar! We had two bartenders and our lines were so long! Get three if you can afford it! - Our wedding was in summer so the wedding is perfect, but pay for heaters if your wedding is at any other time of year...the venue gets chilly when the sunsets - Weddings are short...5-10pm...they only give 2 hours to set up and make you breakdown IMMEDIATELY after the wedding....I would HIGHLY suggest paying a day-of-coordinator to facilitate all of this so you and your family don't have to worry about a thing on the day of your wedding - Do not go with this venue if you are not prepared to put in the time and effort to nag the catering managers and work with security. Can't get a more of a precise name than this. The place is literally a ROOM with an OCEANVIEW. Okay, let me elaborate. It's a spacious room with a beautiful outdoor patio and a breathtaking oceanview! So I don't know about you guys but I've had my fair share of weddings this year. 3 weddings to be a part of let alone 4 to go to is the most I've been to in a year. This particular wedding, I wasn't part of the entourage and was able to spectate the final product from beginning to end. It was beautiful. The calmness of the ocean along with the mesmerizing sunset completely left me in a daze. The bride, my friend, was of course beautiful and did such a great job putting together her wedding. The outdoor patio was set up so that there was a sweethearts table for the bride and groom in the front of the dance floor (their backs to the ocean). So the guests were able to enjoy the view. Though buffets are not my thing, the food was delicious. The salmon was nice and tender, prime rib YUM, they even had roasted pig (lechon- holllla!). This place is not worth the money at all. The decor was shabby, the service was slow, the fish was overcooked, and the manager was annoying and difficult, and argumentative. I would NOT recommend spending your money here. Plus, at 9:30 they turn into a cheap and sleezy club. I had their special of chilean sea bass with lobster in a saffron sauce. The fish was overcooked, and all around, pretty tasteless. The lettuce was a bit wilted, and the sashimi I ordered for an appetizer wasn't good. The event catering services, food, venue, and day-of was phenomenal! The venue is exceptional. It has fantastic views and creates a very elegant ambiance. The catering staff is extremely polite and the food they offer is delicious, served promptly and in Huge portions!! Planning, on the other hand, took a bit more coordination and patience. We had a difficult time reaching an actual person, but once we found our wedding coordinator things flowed much smoother. This is for their Prime Rib Buffet. All the prime rib you can eat for $11.75. What's better - the steak or the value? I don't know. They both taste equally good. It's usually set up so they have the steak and what looks like roasted chicken (I've never had the chicken; I go there for the beef), mashed (and occasionally scalloped) potatoes, gravy, rolls, a salad bar, and desserts that includes ice cream, cakes, turnovers, etc. Really, it's nothing near as massive as Hometown or something, but it doesn't need to be. You come here with one mission - to stuff yourself with prime rib for $11.75. Definitely one of my favorite places to eat. read more

I came here with friends for brunch to celebrate my birthday. We all agreed, you are paying for the view. The service wasn't very good and the food was mediocre. Brunch was $19.95 & you can upgrade with 2 drinks for an additional $5. It would have been nice if the person seating us would have explained this instead of dropping us off and walking away. Went there yesterday for a brunch with my wife. We enjoyed it. There is a spectacular view and the food was very good, especially for a buffet. I had originally made my reservation for noon but was ready to eat at 11:00 so we came early and thankfully they were able to seat us. Note: I highly recommend you come by 11:00 or maybe 11:30 because there was a huge smoked salmon that was already picked over by the time I got to it. I was literally scrapping meat off the bones. Had we come at noon, I would not have had that dish. I think this is really bad for management not to replace the salmon if you are out by 11:30, there is half the brunch time still left people. For $2.00 more you get "bottomless mimosas". For that price you might as well but when it came time to ask for a second mimosa, I had to get up and go find a server. Not the best service but the atmosphere and food made up for it. The buffet includes an omelette station, belgian waffle station and crepes station. I had crepes and my wife had an omelette, both were very good. I was actually surprised at how good the food was. I had been wanting to come for a while and overall it is a good choice. The truth is you cannot get a more beautiful venue for a better price than the oceanview room. My wedding day turned out so fantastic and I would definitely choose this place again. To have a wedding on the water like that anywhere not on base would have cost us three times as much at least. But (and this is a big but) service is not the first priority. (or any priority) I made a handful of requests which I thought were reasonable (extra chairs at the reception, starting drinks fifteen minutes earlier, could I put out some yard games for the kids, etc.) and it was no, no, no. Not even 'we can't do that but here's my recommendation of something else we can try'. I respect the fact that there are rules but the rules felt very arbitrary and no effort was made to work with me for a compromise or something else we could do. And of course there were the issues with security. It ended up working out okay and everyone made it to the wedding including the vendors whose information I didn't get to base security before the deadline, but it was a headache and A LOT of stress the week before. In the end, everyone who didn't get vetted through security just had to get picked up by someone with a base ID so it was an easy solution but that didn't help with my anxiety in the days leading up. For as beautiful and perfect my day was after everything got worked out I would recommend that if you can afford someplace else go with them but if you want beautiful waterfront on a budget be prepared for some extra work. read more

I went here for a wedding yesterday. Location & View - 5 out of 5 - You are right by the water. Beautiful view. You can see Downtown from afar. I think this place is way nicer than Admiral Kidd. The building of Admiral Kidd is made of cheap materials. Ocean View Room is better for weddings. It actually makes me consider this venue when I get married. Food - 4 out of 5 - The food is better than your run-of-the-mill wedding food. Cocktail hour food is pretty good, like the taquitos and corn puffs. The chicken and potatoes were great, and so is the cake. Service is good too. MAIN COMPLAINT: LACK OF HEATERS. I don't mind an outside wedding. There are no bugs here after all. BUT they only put a heater in only a few tables. I think there should be a heater for each table. I understand there is an option for inside reception, but that is too small. Come on, the venue is by the water. There needs to be a heater for everyone. And did I tell you some of the few heaters they brought out broke down, and it took them a while to fix it???? I love this place for their Sunday brunch! I don't know why more people don't take advantage of this! For less than $20 you can have an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet that includes a waffle bar, eggs Benedict bar, omelette bar, sundae bar, as well as many delicious breakfast and lunch items to choose from. I filled up my plate with eggs, potatoes, muffins, fruit, and many other items before I ran into Ivan, the chef of the waffle bar. If you are on a diet, steer clear of Ivan! Otherwise, he will give you the best waffle of your life. He put the traditional fruit, butter, and syrup on only to top it off with peach cobbler, ice cream, white chocolate sauce, whipped cream, sprinkles, and so many other delicious items. I loved it all so much! I'm surprised they did not have to roll me out! Very impressed! The ambiance, food, and customer service were all wonderful!! We had both our ceremony and reception outside since the view of downtown San Diego is lovely and the deck space attached to the building (where we had both our dinner and dancing) is right on the water! Cita, the onsite catering manager, was especially helpful. She even made sure that we were able to try all of the appetizers that were served by putting a special plate at the head table just for us since we missed some of the cocktail hour while we were taking pictures. Since my husband is in the Navy, we were excited to be able to use a naval base venue for both our wedding ceremony and reception and I must say that I was very pleased with how everything turned out at the Oceanview Room! Summary: Do not get married here unless everyone you are inviting and everyone in the wedding is military. And even then, I would be wary of it. Detailed review: I can literally not say enough horrible things about this venue. Please, please, please, do not get married here unless everyone in your party and all of your guests are military. And even then, I would be iffy on it. The staff at Admiral Kidd Club Catering (they also run OceanView) is absolutely incompetent: their staff turn over is ridiculously high, they are almost impossible to get in touch with, and most importantly, no one knows the rules and they will not help you to communicate with security, which has similar issues. During the time I was planning my wedding (approx. 1 year), my wedding was assigned to three separate wedding coordinators (who do nothing to coordinate FYI) and I was not informed of the changes. I emailed and called one person for atleast a month before finding out she didn't even work there any longer. Here is a small example of some of the issues I ran into: 1. I was told two years before my wedding that you cannot book the venue until one year ahead of time. I waited a year and found out that that was not the case, meaning I had to get married on a Sunday if I wanted to get married in September. Follow up on this, I asked if a Saturday date became available to please contact me. When I was booking vendors in March, I asked if my coordinator could please contact the Saturday wedding party to see if they wanted to share a lighting vendor for a possible discount. I did not find out until I had ordered and mailed my Save the Date cards a few months later that the other bridal party had canceled their wedding. 2. The items they need for security ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE GUESTS FROM OUT OF COUNTRY are absolutely absurd and no one at security wants to communicate with you, making it much, much harder. My DJ hand delivered his documentation to the security office and when I called the next day to see if they had it, they had lost it! I called for 5 straight business days before they found it. 3. I had both my ceremony and my reception here. When we came to do our final overview 14 days before, we were informed FOR THE FIRST TIME that these were considered by them to be separate events. That meant, that my vendors for my reception were not allowed on base until 2 hours before the reception. We had to pay $300 extra for my vendors to gain access beforehand. When we disputed the charge with the manager MELISSA (God, I hope her boss reads this), she was the rudest woman I had ever encountered and she laughed like a crazy person! What is wrong with her? How the hell is she in customer service/hospitality? FYI ladies, this applies to your makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers; they are only allowed on base without an escort 3 hours before your ceremony. So if you want to have all those pretty pictures of you getting ready in your hotel room, you will need to have your sponsor escort them on base. I wish I could go into every possible thing that went wrong here, but it would be pages long, and you aren't going to read that. The only pros to this situation were the beauty of the location and the food being pretty decent. If I could change it, I would have chosen a different location 100%. read more

We had our wedding at this venue in May of 2012. Our wedding was a wonderful evening. We had only the reception at the site and it was a great location with no competing events anywhere nearby. The staff was good to work with though they work best with in person meetings. The food was great, the setup was correct, and the staff was very helpful. The staff even prepared separate plates for us so we didn't have to go through the buffet and they ensured everything was to our liking. The view is spectacular. The weather was a little cold so we had them bring the heaters out and it was comfortable. The venue was just finishing renovations so there is now new carpet, paint, and they were just finishing the new restrooms and entryway. It was a perfect event for us and this location is exactly the place I wanted to be celebrating our marriage on the penninsula I grew up on. read more

I booked a Father's Day buffet lunch for my Dad and family at Oceanview. I was rather disappointed overall. I gave a generous two stars because of the festive Hawaiian music, seating for large groups, leis for each guest, yummy Kalua and roast pork, sweet macaroni salad, an okay dessert bar, and one of the BEST outdoor dining views in San Diego. As far as the food goes...I've truly experienced better at far cheaper prices. The teriyaki chicken was dry, the fish was flavorless, my Mai Tai drink was watered down, grilled veggies had a bland taste, and there was NO pasta or noodle entree. Oceanview did not have a salad bar! All they had was a bowl of Spring Mix lettuce with ONE "choice" of dressing, I think you get the idea. read more
