Went here for Easter lunch with my family and it was incredible! I've been here a few times but decided to get the gnocchi with asparagus which I never had. The gnocchi was soft and pillowy and the sauce was so creamy. Got the chocolate mousse cake to go and it was so rich snd moist. Also generous portion sizes which I appreciate.
Came here on a double date for an early dinner. The space had an old world charm with exposed brick walls, nice lighting, and pops of red. We were seated immediately and given complimentary soft bread with fancy butter and a medley of vegetables. The bread was nice and fresh. The vegetables consisted of squash, peppers, as well as eggplant, which was cooked well and the combination was very tasty. For my meal, I ordered the Special of Stuffed Pork Chop with Gorgonzola and spinach. This came with sides of mashed potatoes and veggies. This was plated beautifully, with the Pork Chop looking impressive with perfect char marks. The Pork Chop was wonderfully tender, well seasoned, and oozed with the rich, creamy, flavorful Gorgonzola. I'm not a huge fan of spinach, so that part was just okay. Veggies were grilled zucchini, squash, and peppers. Mashed potato was fluffy, but was quite bland. Service was pretty good. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. All the food came out in a timely manner and we had a lovely time here.
I really liked Spasso. The restaurant itself is huge - multiple rooms of dining. Even though we had a reservation on Valentine's Day they still had plenty of tables. Free bread was delicious. We got a bottle of wine to share which was also good. We got the eggplant rollotini- 2 pieces and not huge, but flavorful and silky. We got the salmon pasta and shrimp fradiavolo. Both were flavorful and came with a good amount of salmon/shrimp. The noodles were large and chewy - delicious. We also split 2 desserts - a special brûlée cheese which was so unique and delicious, and a tarfutto, which was interesting.
Came here for my brother's graduation dinner last night. Every Wednesday, they have a special that includes an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert, plus a complimentary bottle of wine for every two people, for only $45 each- which is an amazing deal, especially for all the food you get! We walked in at 6 and were greeted warmly, the hostess quickly bringing us to the back room to seat us. It's a very homey and quiet atmosphere. We came at the perfect time, because it wasn't too crowded- when we left, though, it was much more busy. Our waiter was very friendly and accommodating. Again, I felt like I was being welcomed in to somebody's home. We were given complimentary bread, alongside stewed vegetables to top it with, butter, and olive oil. The butter was high-quality and delicious, and so were the stewed vegetables. To start off my meal, I opted for the mussels with red sauce- it's something I'd been craving, and it was everything I wanted! It came out steaming hot, and even though it was a lot of food, I ate all of them. For my entree, I ended up getting the shrimp linguine- the linguine seemed to me like it was made in-house, and it had a delicious creamy pesto sauce to accompany it. Since it was so much food, I ended up taking half of my entree back home. Four out of our party of 6 ended up getting the crème brûlée for dessert, which was perfectly light with that classic and satisfying crisp on the top. It wasn't too sweet or heavy, so it was the perfect way to end a delicious meal.
My partner and I visited the Old City establishment on Wednesday dinner service for a date night after seeing they offer a limited-time $45, three-course menu. We were able to select any appetizer, entrée, and dessert; and a bottle of house wine comes complementary for parties of two. This was a very filling dinner that came at one of the best value meals I've had in the city. (I noticed some past reviews indicating it was no longer present; it appears to be seasonal, but as of winter 2025 it is still available.) We were served bread upon seating, which came with a vegetable relish and dip that made for a great opener. The meatballs and grilled calamari were both great starters; I thought the portion sizes were excellent. I was surprised to find the New York Strip Steak was included without a surcharge, as it was both delicious and the best value. My partner enjoyed her pasta as well, and we swapped bites from both of our dishes. I think my steak could've trimmed the gristle a touch more, but it was extremely filling and we both had leftovers. Our waiter also was friendly and helped suggest options, as the menu has a fair share of pastas, meats, and traditional Italian fare. The staff was attentive and I felt our service was strong. We also promptly got our to-go boxes and was able to take home the wine that was left in our bottle, which was a plus! Dessert was also included, and both the crème brûlée and tiramisu were decadent. Our total cost was under $100 (pre-tip), and it was one of the more filling meals I've had worth every penny! There's also bar seating for its Happy Hour, which I'd be looking forward to trying for a revisit.

The atmosphere is so inviting--it truly felt like we had just stepped off the streets of an Italian neighborhood into a local gem. Our waiter was fantastic--friendly, attentive, and so helpful when we couldn't decide (because honestly, everything on the menu looked amazing). We started with the goat cheese and walnut salad, which was out of this world. Fresh, flavorful, and the perfect way to begin the meal. For my main course, I had the Gnocchi Con Asparagi. Let me just say--if you've ordered "gnocchi" at other restaurants, you haven't really had gnocchi until you've had it here. Absolutely worth savoring every single bite. We finished with tiramisu, which was light, creamy, and the perfect ending to the night. From start to finish, everything about this meal was outstanding. Great food, warm atmosphere, and exceptional service--you really can't find better Italian in Philly!
Went for happy hour and split the happy hour mussels, happy hour vodka sauce pasta (we substituted penne for their homemade fusilli), happy hour gnocchi Gorgonzola, happy hour meatballs, and Caesar salad. Actually perfect for two hungry girls, love that we could try smaller portions of their pasta dishes. The Caesar salad was actually awesome and well dressed. Super cute in there.

We pulled up to Spasso Italian Grill in Old City, Philly--because apparently when execs break bread, they do it with taste. Let me just say this: Spasso is him. In a post-COVID world where most places barely remember how to do lunch right, Spasso said, "Let me show you how we used to do it when the food came from the soul and not the freezer." Ain't no chain energy here--this is straight Italy, no passport required. I ordered what looked like a humble plate of linguine in red sauce with seafood, but baby, that thing hit like Sunday morning on the third stanza of Total Praise. The noodles were homemade, soft but not mushy--had that little bounce to them, like they was tryna two-step in the sauce. And the sauce? Rich. Simple. Tomato-forward. Tasted like somebody's auntie been simmerin' it since 9am with the windows open and a Luther Vandross playlist on repeat. The seafood wasn't stingy either. Full chunks of flavor in every bite. Not chopped up mystery meat. This was seafood with a name and a résumé. Even the bread came with style--roasted red peppers, parmesan, oil, and some lil marinated veggies that honestly made me pause and reflect on how blessed I was. That bread alone deserved a praise break. Then came the cappuccino... listen. It showed up with a lil' foam hat, cinnamon dusted on top like it had somewhere special to be. Smooth, comforting, and grown. No sugar needed. Just vibes. We did have cannolis too--but I ain't get a pic 'cause the moment was too good to interrupt with a phone. Just know it was crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and balanced like a good choir director. Sweet--but not too sweet. Would I go again? Without a doubt. Should you go? Only if you're ready for real Italian food and not that reheated stuff folks try to pass off in the microwave. Spasso is where you go when you want lunch to mean something. When you wanna eat food that got memory, history, and respect in it. Ain't nothin' fancy--just food done right, with care and culture. That's my kind of spot.
Came here on a Tuesday and was surprised to learn about the $50 special on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You get to choose any Appetizer, Entree & Dessert& get a complimentary bottle of house wine. I would love to try happy hour at the bar one day!

Cute little italian place around the corner from our hotel. Ambiance was great with nice low lighting and exposed stone on the walls. Felt very rustic. Service and food were excellent. read more

We were excited to try this place since they used to have a $45? menu special which included an appetizer, entrée, desserts, and a bottle of wine for each two person dining in. However, they got rid of this special in the Philadelphia location - you can still find them on certain days in the Media location. The waiter said the special probably won't be back until February of 2024. We ended up getting 2 fried calamari to shared for the four of us and we each ordered our own entree. The portion sizes were pretty generous. I love the complimentary bread and veggie squash dip they serve in the beginning. The bread was really soft on the inside and crispy on the edges, reminded me of a sourdough bread. I got the seafood risotto which was only available on Wednesday. It was delicious and I enjoyed the big juicy shrimps! While this place is definitely not my favorite Italian place in Philly, it did every thing right and was delicious. The staffs were okay, nothing memorable nor did they go above and beyond that add to the dining experience. read more

Was able to get a reservation easily for 2 on a Friday night, same day (just to be safe). Service was quick. Everything was a bit on the pricier end, including the eggplant rollatini for $13 that came with 2 pieces, but it was still delicious. My boyfriend and I both enjoyed our entrees - he got the short rib pappardelle and I had the fettuccine shrimp. Nice and creamy with a good helping of shrimp. I like my pasta al dente so this was perfect for me, but if you like you're a little softer I'd steer away from this dish. Despite the prices, definitely will be back read more

Outstanding dinner super quiet for a Saturday night will absolutely be back had lovely Service. The food was absolutely some of the best Italian I have ever had. I had the crab ravioli it made me do a happy dance as to how amazing the flavors were. read more

I think eating here is as close as I will ever get to experiencing true and utter bliss (picture the scene of the food reviewer in Ratatouille). Service was amazing and their weekday special was just the icing on the cake. read more
My partner and I went for happy hour. The Fusilli Lunghi was good, but the Penne Spasso was amazing. It was the perfect portion for us and we really appreciated the bread and caponata to soak up the sauce! The real standout, however, was service. Our bartender (I think her name was Lauren) made honest recommendations about what was good instead of just trying to upsell us. We will definitely be coming back because of that. Amazing! Loved everything about this place! Service was friendly and attentive. True Italian rustic restaurant vibe. Delicious muscles as an appetizer and our pasta dishes were full of flavor and authenticity. Rounded it out with the most delicious cannoli and cappuccino. Wished we lived in Philly as this would become a regular dinner spot. read more
Good food and ambiance but service was lacking on the server side. The person that seated my friend and I were lovely -- felt like we were talking to our aunt. The server, not so much. She could not recommend a dessert when asked between 2, which one was better. Then when we asked for a bit of time since she couldn't recommend one, it took her 30-45mins to come back and that was only because she was flagged and it was the same way with getting the check. It was honestly the tone, she was so condescending in the the way she spoke. It started when we saw the Tuesday special being $45 instead of the $35 we saw online. When my friend and I asked, she goes no, it hasn't been $35 for years now. We're like oh, ok. Maybe we saw it wrong because that's what we saw on the website. She just kept on talking about how it's not $35 and that the website does not say that as if we were lying to get a deal. Then, when we were lacking knowledge on what a house wine but instead of being nicely educated it almost felt like she was trying to hint we were dumb. The was she spoke was not appreciated. There was many better ways to speak. Fortunately, the food was good and my friend and I enjoyed it. We didn't do the deal and instead we got salad (when we asked how big the salad and if it could be shared as an appetizer she did not know and it was normal for 1person), chicken cutlet and creme brulee and all of it was so good. We cleaned all of the plates. I'm not sure if I will be back though. I feel like there are better ones out there with a complete happy experience. read more

I can't ever remember a time where Spasso's didn't leave us wanting to come back for more! From the complimentary homemade roasted peppers and bread..... to their outstanding grilled calamari and homemade arancini appetizers. Let's not forget about the fact that EVERYTHING IS HOMEMADE, fresh to order ! That includes all of their pasta! It's dimly lit and not too loud, with a little hint of Italian music in the background. Your drinks will never go dry and you will have to save room for dessert! read more
Went here with a group of friends and it was a nice atmosphere. There is plenty of parking in the area including a parking lot and several meters right out front of the restaurant. We got complimentary bread with some roasted vegetables while browsing quite the menu. There were so many options it was overwhelming and overall, the pasta was average. The noodles were thick and al dente, the pesto cream sauce not very flavorful. Everything was expensive with a cannoli being $12. You could probably find better food elsewhere in the city. read more

My friends and I (3 of us altogether), made a reservation day of and enjoyed a 7:00 reservation on a Saturday night. Restaurant is huge! Casual fancy, nice spot for family dinner or date night, too. We started off with calamari (eh, a little chewy) and mussels (white sauce was delicious! Mussels were a good size). Server also brought out bread -- not really "enough" for the 3 of us and bread was cold -- but neither here nor there. I LOVED a bite of my friend's carbonara and the chicken cutlet was amazing on the chicken parm. Although many rave reviews about the short rib pappardelle, I wasn't super impressed -- felt one note, meat had a touch of an acidic flavor to it. I ate most of it but I probably would try something else next time! Dessert sampler was amazing (imo) -- favorites: cheesecake (so fresh), cannoli (so good but no chocolate chips :( ) -- tiramisu and chocolate mousse also on the plate -- tiramisu was good! Very light, not too coffee-ee. Great serving size for sharing. Service was pretty good. Our server had pretty great timing with dishes and drinks and wasn't too engaged but also not disengaged from us either. He was overall helpful and pleasant. read more

Amazing!! This was a Tuesday girls day for me and a good friend of mine and I'm glad she chose this spot. I heard good things but that didn't compare to the joy and excitement I experienced dining in. We started off with the warm bread and wine while we sifted through options! The Pinot Grigio (pictured) was smooth and the noise level was calm, everyone around us were enjoying themselves. The Dinner Madness (3-Course Dinner & Complimentary Bottle of Wine) was truly worth it! It was worth it for sure and truly added to the experience! Beginning with the Walnut & Goat Cheese Salad & Fried Calamari (cooked just right) were great! Our entrees were filling and tasted so good. We shared a few things for tasting and neither one of us were disappointed. Oh! And the staff was one to remember. Everyone was helpful, knowledgeable and the amount of team work seen throughout my visit was heartwarming. read more
Friendly staff and I had the pappardelle porcini. They do this dish well and it is one the ones to order. Possibly the rock shrimp w pesto sauce. I had the coffee and creamer was provided. No sugar was available so I just did without it. No mocktails either and the regular drinks didn't spark an interest for me. The environment is a homely, warm feeling that makes you feel like you want to stay there and eat. My wife and I were visiting Philly for work and were hankering for some good, old fashioned Italian food. It is difficult in this day and age to have a restaurant that does what restaurants are supposed to do: nourish people. We occupy a position in time in which most everything has already been done. How do you stand out under such circumstances? Many try to decorate lavishly, add twists on classic meals, or shock with stunt food. I'm pleased to say that Spasso stands out by doing none of these things- they provide delicious, fresh food with excellent service and a homey ambiance. It is simple, and in its simplicity lies a refreshing reality- focus on the important stuff, and everything else will fall into place. There is no substitution for this formula. My friend and I came for the 3 course dining experience on a Tuesday, which came with an appetizer, entree, dessert, and a bottle of wine. The amount of food was definitely well worth the experience. For the appetizers, we got the fried calamari and bruschetta toast. Those were ok but nothing stand out. For the entree, we ordered the short rib pappardelle and carbonara; both were delicious. Came here last night with a group of 6 friends. We were sat in their beautiful dining room area. Tables were large enough to seat us all comfortably. It had a very nice Italian feel to it. I ordered from the restaurant week menu which was $40 for appetizer, entree and dessert. I sadly forgot my dessert on the table and walked out. All the food that came out was bursting with flavor. I got the four cheese spinach raviolis which had wild mushroom stuffed inside. The cheese sauce on the raviolis was excellent to be saved with the bread . Nothing went to waste last night. Servers were also kind and knowledgeable of the menu. We will definitely back for a romantic evening out!!! read more

Yes gluten free pasta is available but penne only
Is the food cooked with any soy?
I️ am almost positive there aren't any soy products specifically advertised on the menu. You'd have to speak to the chef about soy sauce, miso, meat alternatives etc but I️ can't imagine they'd be found in Italian Foods.
