I spent one night here this past weekend for a last minute trip. Usually when I'm in Key West it's for performing, so that means I'm usually staying with friends. This time we were booked into this adorable Inn right in the heart of Duval! I would totally recommend this place! The room was spacious, the shower was huge (and the bathroom too), and the bed was soooooo comfortable. I have a really bad back so it was a treat to not wake up in pain. They also give you a certificate for a free drink at check-in at their adorable in house rum bar, and the bartender does not hold back! A bonus was they had a full size fridge with water for us, and a mini kitchen! I loved learning about the history of this place from the staff. The palings on the upper porch has alcohol bottles as well as hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs cut out to signify it was a speakeasy where booze and gambling could be found, back in the day. They also had a resident cat by the name of Captain Tubby (I believe that was his official name. I called him Captain Phatasmic) who was the pinnacle representation of the Key West laid back attitude. The only reason it's not a 5 star review is bright and early Saturday morning we were woken by the roaring sounds of a chain saw taking down branches of trees directly outside our room. If you've ever spent a night in Key West you know they usually end pretty late, so it was a bit of a rude awakening. There was also a hose left out all night directly in the pathway that I nearly tripped on. I would absolutely love to return to this place and hope that next time it's not such a short trip so that I can enjoy a lazy afternoon people watching on their porch while sipping on delicious rum drinks. My husband and I loved our stay at Speakeasy Inn. The location was great and the inn had everything we needed. The staff was friendly and kept the room tidy and replenished the bottled water in our mini fridge which was very appreciated. We also enjoyed the attached bar, the Rum Bar. Their drink and cocktail selection was great. They had a banana split cocktail that was my favorite. Even with the bar in the same building, it wasn't loud when we went to bed early. It was very convenient to get a drink before bed though. read more

I almost don't want to write this review because it's already hard enough getting a reservation at the Speakeasy Inn. We visit Key West annually and have stayed here for our last three visits. We love the location and the ease of being right on Duval. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. We enjoy having a mini fridge in the room, and having a parking spot is convenient since we always drive down to Key West. The only downsides are that the bed isn't the most comfortable, the shower in room 2 is tiny, and the wifi is terrible. Still I haven't found anything else comparable in Key West for the price and it's a great value overall. read more

I bought a non refundable 3 day stay here through Hotels.Com. The virus hit forcing us to cancel. Ann from Speakeasy refunded our money through her own integrity and the goodness of her heart. It's easy to be accommodating when things are going right but when glitches such as C-19 strike the cream rises to the top. I can't wait to visit this hotel in the future and I'm done using third party companies for hotel reservations. We were very fortunate the way this turned out as the refund money made our current financial situation much less stressful. read more

During our trip to Key West we went on many quests. Finding the best conch fritter, Pina Colada & Mojito. The first is a useless task. Being a native of Florida their is nothing like a conch fritter from your grandma's kitchen. The second was found in this random ass bar from what looked like a Slurpee machine, damn good though. The third, here at the Speakeasy Inn. After taking a long walk to the southernmost point we found sanctuary at the bottom of a rummy delicious glass. Minty, refreshing, limey goodness, all within a very tiny bar, poured by a California native that fell in love with a lovely island. We had a great time rehydrating (so to speak) at the Inn. A trip to this bar is not complete with out a shot of root juice. Man up and have some. read more

What a let down. We stayed here for 6 days & it was awful. Would have switched hotels except all were completely booked. The property has new owners. Room was at the back of the property & very small. No lights on the pathway so very dark at night. Noone came to clean the room at all. We had to ask for towels & to have someone make the bed. Nothing was cleaned or replenished the entire stay. There were no bugs which was great & the location was very convenient. If you have an issue after the office closes at 5 or 6pm too bad cause you are on your own. There is noone in the office or on site just the bartender who can't help you. The people at the bar until closing & even after closing are so loud. They dont realize that there are people staying in the rooms. We heard lots of yelling, cursing & sometimes fighting. If you plan on getting any sleep don't stay here. We had to shimmy around the bed & our suitcases. There was no room to put anything or hang anything. Couldn't use the small old kitchenette because we had to put our suitcases in front of it so we could walk in the room. Shower head sprayed water all over the walls & ceiling. Shower leaked puddles of water all over the floor. Outlets were loose & coming off the wall. This place is very old. The rooms need a lot of updating. Noone was even around when we checked out. Just left our keys outside the office. I would not recommend this place to anyone. What an awful experience. Basically they took our money & said see ya, you're on your own. They obviously they don't care about their customers. There was no customer service at all. Definitely ZERO stars. Find another place to stay. read more

So we have stayed at the Speakeasy Inn now for 4 straight years, we even have recommended to family and friends who has stayed there over the years. Anyway, this last Christmas eve we had a problem with our bed (it is broken, uncomfortable, and extremely squeaky), and requested to switch rooms. They were unable to switch us, so we were forced to check-out. Then the new employee (Scott)who constantly was smoking outside of our room ,very nasty, with a full ashtray , that we could smell all the time! went on to say the owners are unavailable but will call us in a few days to work out the money details (they make you pay for entire reservation before you check in, plus we had a prepaid night deposit from many months ago, as they require). We were never contacted. We have tried to call 3 or 4 times and they will not even answer the phone. We were not refunded a single penny, they charged us for our entire stay, even though we stayed only one miserable night with hardly any sleep and a hurt back. We are shocked. Never again. Worst treatment ever for dedicated customers. As far as we our concerned, this new management are thieves. read more

This is a place to stay with a bar below. A lot of Rums to choose from, but they also have a card that have the common drinks for those of us not well versed in Rum drinks. Bartender was friendly. Drinks were awesome! Bathrooms were a shock, super clean, awesome soaps and lotions and salt scrubs. Smelled super clean for being in a bar. Bar, Table, and outdoor seating with umbrellas. Fun time. I stopped in here a few times during my 10 day visit. Bikers seem to stop in pretty frequently but are a funloving crowd. read more

I stayed at the Speakeasy Inn for a few nights earlier this week with my girlfriend. It totally lived up to our expectations after we had browsed through many options leading up to our trip. Very affordable, close to the popular Old Town areas near Duval Street, but far enough down the South end that it is away from the late night craziness that can happen. We stayed in Room #2, which is upstairs and toward the rear, with a nice private porch. Great option for a couple, especially if you care to sleep in a bit as its location is further back from any morning hustle and bustle. No complaints about our room, and the office staff that we met (Scott and Tonya) were very hospitable during our stay. In fact the worst part of our stay was the heat, which made it hard to get out and do much during the middle of the day, but we did choose to go to the Keys in mid-August after all (oops). The staff at the Rum Bar were also great (we met Jill and Pat while we were there), very friendly with many good suggestions on what to do, see, and eat while we were in Key West. Oh and they make some great rum drinks (in which we may have indulged a bit too much! It was National Rum Day after all....) Overall we highly recommend Speakeasy and the Rum Bar, and will definitely look for open rooms there first the next time we go to Key West. read more

After having visited the island for the 10th straight year, we decided to surrender ourselves to a place where we weren't hurried or rushed by trying to catch the next resort shuttle bus, and chose the Speakeasy Inn & Rum Bar. We are so glad we did; best stay we've EVER had! I booked the room in February for our 11 night stay in November over thanksgiving. Glad I did it nice and early too cause they book rather quickly... We arrived well1 ahead of check-in time and were greeted by Tonya who graciously let us check-in uber early so we could get settled before heading out. We booked room #4 which is called "Everything you need and nothing you don't". It was perfect for us and the name said it all. It was super-clean with an awesomely comfy queen size bed, an armoire, microwave, mini fridge with complimentary water bottles, coffees and coffeemaker, toaster, silverware, glass wear and dishes, a private bathroom with a shower big enough for the two of us. In the room there was a coupon for 2 free drinks and a personalized letter addressed to me that welcomed us to the Inn and thanked us for booking with them. Nice touch! We roamed the island daily and would return to the room often to drop-off, pick-up, etc.. and the room was always cleaned by the staff and the water supply was replenished by 11am for the duration of our stay. The biggest surprise to us was the continental breakfast. Holy smokes! The resorts we stayed at in the past need to stop by the Speakeasy and take notes! Cereal, milk, assorted breads & pastries, yogurts, fruit tray, hard-boiled eggs, ham, assorted cheeses, oatmeal and assorted toppings, Nutella spread, peanut butter, jellies.. It was a lot of options and will save you $40 per day for breakfast elsewhere! The bar was and is another big hit for us here. Not only do they have an incredible array or rums to try, the bartenders were all also very unique and 100% awesome! Pat was super-cool; laid back, friendly and informative. We talked rums for a long time and he actually gave us a gift card to a local, newer breakfast/brunch spot! How cool was that?! Geno was another of the bartenders we had the absolute pleasure of meeting and he had us in stitches - Super funny, wicked nice guy... and then we met a bartender who forever changed my life and thoughts about pumpkin flavored stuff. I loathe pumpkin anything however, Mindy made a pumpkin hummus for all to share and it blew me away! It was the BEST hummus I ever ate! I couldn't get enough of it... seriously! She was also super-nice and very sweet and gave my wife the recipe, which we will be using for Christmas; hip-hip hooray! Overall, each and every staff member we met was super nice, friendly and accommodating from check-in with Tonya to check-out with Scott, who by the way is one of the nicest guys we've come across on the island. We were blessed to have found this gem and to have met the folks we did and are very much looking forward to our 11th year back and our next stay here at the Speakeasy. Fun place to stay while in Key West! Room 1C is upstairs at the back. Beach themed room with sofa which makes into a bed. Great porch across the front to sit and watch the crowd at night. Found this gem online, and quite honestly because of the modest price I wasn't expecting much. This place is perfect and true Key West, charming, super clean and quaint, including all the amenities you'd expect in a $375./night Big chain suite. Oh, and the bonus, it's also a rum bar with the largest selection of rum from around the world. The breakfast in the morning way above average with fresh (real) bagels, muffins, eggs, fresh squeezed OJ, real coffee and tea, etc. Lastly, it's right on the top of Duval. read more

I really can't say enough great things about this b&b. It really was the perfect place to stay during my two day trip to Key West. LOCATION Located on Duval St, but not right in the middle of the action. Near the southernmost point, it's only a short walk to all the bars and restaurants closer to Mallory Square on Duval. I liked being walking distance from the bars, but far enough away that our stay was quiet and peaceful. THE RUM BAR Yes, this b&b is on top of a rum bar. This bar is a quieter talk-with-friends-over-a-fantastic-rum-drink than a take-shots-of-rum-and-dance-on-tables bar. We weren't disturbed by the noise at all, but probably because we didn't make it back to bed until after the rum bar closed. The complementary painkiller drink you receive on arrival is phenomenal. It's like a light piña colada with fresh coconut and nutmeg. Mojitos and rum punch were also spot on. If you're looking for a strong drink, order a "Bark and Stormy". Bacardi 151 never tasted so good! THE BED I was 100% satisfied with the room. It was clean and tastefully decorated like how I imagine a beach house bedroom would look. Our room had a fridge (stocked with cold water bottles), bathroom with a shower and tub, and a TV. THE BREAKFAST Fresh fruit and pastries, bagels, cereal, fresh J, hard boiled eggs-- I was happily full after breakfast both mornings. My boyfriend and I stayed here over this past weekend for our birthdays. I found this hotel on the BringFido.com website, which will later explain my 3 star rating.... The hotel itself was quant and well taken care of, and so was the Rum Bar attached. The room was very small, but neat and bright. In my opinion the nightly rate was a bit expensive for the size of the room, especially off-season. Also, they don't have on site parking, but do offer a free lot a few blocks away. The hotel was at the quieter end of Duval which was great. You could still walk everywhere, there was still some action, but it wasn't in the middle of the rowdier areas. It was also a quick walk to the Southernmost Beach, the dog beach, and some great little shops and cafes. We enjoyed going out one night and spending one night on the front patio doing some people watching! We also brought our bikes; there are plenty of places to lock them up on premises. My 3 star rating comes from this: I sought out hotels that we could bring our dogs. I found them on BringFido.com which lists their pet rules/regulations. I filtered based on 2 things- no weight limit (we have larger dogs), and ability to have 2 (which we do). Speakeasy's website had no mention of pets being allowed or prohibited, so I emailed them directly stating I needed a pet friendly room. I received a response saying that they had a room available and that there would be a $50 pet fee. No problem. I responded asking what their pet rules were and if they had a weight limit, just to confirm again. The response was, our rules are that your pets are well behaved, that you leave a number we can reach you in case they bark, etc., and again $50 fee. No problem. I paid the deposit and we were booked. We arrived and began to unload. The woman then came and asked for our credit card again because she "didn't realize I had two dogs". I reminded her of my email asking of their regulations and her response again was, "I didn't know you had two. It's $50 per dog". I told her that I understood, but that was never stated to me. My boyfriend is a bit more easy-going than me, and paid the fee. Unfortunately, I'm still a bit frustrated. Maybe she misunderstood me asking in the email, but considering there are no rules on their site, that they're advertising "no limits, $50 fee only" for per friendly rooms on BringFido.com, it seems that they should divulge that information to anyone with a pet friendly room. All this being said, I'm trying to be as fair as possible. This is a great little spot for a romantic weekend, but probably not if you're bringing your pet. I considered another hotel in my search that charged less for pets and had a pool, so I would have made out better with that choice had I been given more specific information. It wasn't quite worth the money in the end, but it is a very nice choice for a couple or gals getaway, etc... minus Fido. read more

Even though we had been treated rudely at our hotel for looking like college students this place welcomed us with open arms. Great, fun bartenders, and by far the best rum bar (only 180 varieties to choose from) on the island! We tried the "Root Juice" - holy crap. We will definitely stay there again! My boyfriend and I made our second trip to Key West together in June. Our first choice for B&B, the place we stayed in the first time we went together, had no vacancy for the weekend we planned on going, so we reluctantly searched for another place that could possibly be as good as our first. I Googled bed & breakfasts in Key West and stumbled upon the Speakeasy. We were immediately taken by its location, right on Duval Street but yet not so "in the mix" of all the social madness that can occur at times. When I began to read the reviews, it seemed so many people were happy with their experience there, and I learned that the inn had an interesting part in history as well. All these factors, along with the inn's apparent charm, won us over right away. Our personal experience there confirmed all the great reviews we had read. We had a warm welcome at the bar, where we checked in and ordered a drink at the same time! We stayed in their smallest room, which proved to be more than enough space for us. It was perfectly cozy with an oh-so-comfortable bed. The following morning, I walked over to the bar to see if I could grab some breakfast for my boyfriend to have in bed. The woman who welcomed me asked our names, which definitely made it a more personal experience. When I told her I was looking to take some food back to the room, she looked for a tray to give me to help me in taking everything in one trip. Drove in from Fort Meyers and stayed 3 nights! Hotel staff was all very friendly and helpful! Location was great for us. Room was clean. And Maid service always made sure the room was clean and tidy when we returned later in the day. Fridge was always restocked with bottles of water. Enjoyed having the free breakfast in the morning. The owner greeted us with so much kindness and a smile that we immediately felt at home! This hotel is also an amazingly cozy rum bar. All of the staff and bartenders were so friendly, kind, and accommodating. This was also the perfect location....on Duval St, but not right in the middle of all the craziness. John was hilarious and super accommodating when checking us in and all of the bartenders were amazing. It is the perfect location right on Duval Street and the room rates were a great deal. This inn is hospitality at its finest. We stayed with our 3 and 5 year old. *tip: our 2 children truly are well behaved and fully understood to walk softly and use inside voices. Don't be "those guests." You know if your babies are able to chill and not annoy the rest of the guests.* we were in room 1C, upstairs. Exceptionally clean, daily housekeeping and room refresh. Continental breakfast was great. Coffee, juice, cereal, fresh fruit, 6 different spreads for bagels and muffins (NUTELLA!) The drinks downstairs at The Rum Bar were really good and well priced. The Duval Loop Bus is 1 block behind the inn and is a 5 minute walk to the Butterfly Conservatory. It is directly on Duval with an unloading zone in front and guest parking, though limited, is only a block away. There are spaces for each room to park I think. We have always stayed at the bigger resorts in KW, and I wish we would have found this gem years ago. The kitchenette has all the dishes, cutlery, etc. you might need with mini fridge, microwave and plenty of space to store snacks if you need them. Guests do get to use a pool at a nearby resort, but that pool is adults only, just fyi. The guy who is the dayshift bartender during the week is a curmudgeon, but I mean that in the absolute best way. He is salty but really personable and funny. I wish I could give them more than 5 stars. read more

Nice staff, clean, fairly comfortable and surprisingly quiet given there is a Rum Bar on the first floor. Two complaints- shower floor is very slippery and pillows are HARD. I absolutely love this place!!! We found it online at a reasonable price in a last minute trip we planned from Miami to Key West on my bday. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! The only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because I just don't care for the little old kitchenette in the tiny room. My boyfriend and I made our first visit to Key West this past weekend (we live in Miami) and stayed here! Before we even got there the manager called us to make sure we were finding our way ok! When we got there we got the most warm greeting. The owner, who also serves as the night time bar tender is the most welcoming and accomodating woman, and GREAT bar tender as well! The bar has delicious and fresh drinks! :) A great way to wind down after a long hot day! Everyone is so kind and helpful. The rooms are adorable and the location is perfect! Its out of the way of the "touristy" areas, but still on Duval and in walkable distance to almost anywhere you would want to go! We will definitely be making this our go-to place when we want to get back down to key west! LOVED it! We can't say enough good things about it! read more

My husband and I celebrated our first anniversary here. This b&b is amazing! Our room, 1a, was a great size and had a wonderful balcony over looking duval. It was impeccably clean and convenient. The rum bar was a great addition. Deliciously crafted drinks and great prices. The entire staff was incredibly friendly. Early check in was not a problem and they held our bags for us for a few hours the day we were leaving. Location was ideal to attractions on duval and a short bike ride to a nice beach (smathers). The rooms were big and clean with icy A/C. Loved the continental breakfast, bar and comfy beds!!! The breakfast in the AM was great with fresh squeezed OJ and fresh fruit as well as cereal and bagels, but honestly the star of the show is the fact that we came downstairs and had a drink before heading out and were able to wrap up our night with a drink before bed! The best in every way but one. The walls are so thin, and Duvall is such a loud street. There's not much that can be done about it, but we had a difficult time sleeping. Great people, and great location, though. read more
