I went to about 10 sessions at the Spear at The Plaza Hotel. I had high hopes likely due to great marketing but the product did not match the hype. In a word I would call the overall operation amateurish. I have had years of amazing, comprehensive PT elsewhere and know the difference very well. I found Kyle at a time when I was desperate to get back to running after nursing a post-tib tendonitis injury for several months. Seeing Kyle, and doing PT at Spear in general, was the best decision I could have made. Kyle excelled at listening, guiding me through the exercises, and skillfully allowed me to progress back to running after about a month. When I was lying in the hospital bed on October 15th 2022, I was afraid I'd never be able to walk, much less move, without searing pain ever again. We don't realize how much of our mobility the lower back affects. I couldn't even take a deep breath without pain shooting up my back. I didn't know what to expect from physical therapy and was pleasantly surprised to find that it is a combination (at least it was for me) of heat, massage and physical therapy. I went into that first session terrified, in part because I have never been a gym girlie, but Benjamin Schwartz's friendly demeanor instantly put me at ease. (Let me just say, when I realized my therapist was gonna be a white man, I was also hesitant, because I only trust Black women providers with my health. I was headed into uncharted territory on two different fronts.) I had no reason to worry. Ben listened to my concerns and adjusted workouts depending on how my back was feeling. He's an excellent masseuse who can read the tension in muscles as well as reading a book (at least I assume he is literate, even though his handwriting borders on illegible.) I learned quickly that all the muscles in the body are connected and was disheartened to learn I had to exercise and strengthen my whole body and wouldn't learn some magical trick to give me a stronger back in 10 weeks. Even though I still hate exercise, I enjoyed the months of learning new exercises, pushing myself, feeling myself get stronger, getting quality massages on a regular basis for free, and also just chatting with Ben and Emmanuel. I'm so glad my weeknights are freeing up just in time for hot girl summer but I'll miss having the built in accountability to work out. (I'm rly trying to make a lifestyle change here and work out regularly but OMG who has the time! Discipline has never been my strongest suit.) I definitely recommend spear, I went for plantars fasciitis and was very glad I went ahead and did physical therapy for it. When I started to get reallly good at an exercise they'd up the ante and push me even more getting me through my foot pain, so I definitely saw the impact of going. She said the receptionist said she'd send them but didn't, she didn't feel like taking a minute to walk back to get them[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. To save time, she began asking me 2 questions at once (e.g., do I have high blood pressure or have I ever had a stroke), didn't give me time to answer the 2nd one & went onto the next 2 questions. This is a trait that the worst dr I ever went to in my entire life also had. She said she'd examine me, pointed to the pelvic floor model but it she didn't examine me. She said my doctor's diagnosis was incorrect, we didn't need to do these exercises, we could do biofeedback & she'd email send me all the Kegels exercises. I mentioned anti-Kegels & how Kegels aren't good for everyone. She then said this was correct. What a wonderful experience considering it's PT, you know what I mean ($ co-pays, time away from work, for x amount of days & weeks). But, I must say I am very happy that I listened to my spinal orthopedic, who insisted that I needed PT and guess what . . . He was right on. So, he gave me a referral, which leads me to Spear Physical Therapy. Ben Schwartz my physical therapist was sooo amazing, he is a great listener and was able to identify the issue(s) and create a plan to help me strengthen my lower back area and essentially rid me of my pain that I suffered with for over 2 years. The whole thing has been physically and emotionally exhausting, but my experience at Spear has been excellent. One of the good things about Spear is the fact that they have multiple locations, and I was able to choose this location in Midtown because it is near my job. My therapist, Justin B., is very knowledgeable in his field, and I felt very comfortable working with him and his team. A gem to converse with! Unethical business practiced. I never actually got to experience the service here. I call to verify insurance and got a ridiculous that they were both in and out of network for my insurance. I will have to pay X for 12 sessions then the price would drop for following sessions. I was also told my insurance would send me a check that I would have to bring to Spear. I called my insurance and they were dumbfounded. Being out of network means no insurance coverage until a deductible is met. The front office is very shady. Echoing another reviewer (Dan's comments) about insurance fraud. I have been dealing with their payment agency for last few months. That's exactly why I had requested for an in network billing process. They told me my therapy hours would be reduced if I chose to be In Network, which I gladly accepted because I did not want to deal with transferring the money and keeping track of checks. In the end, they still charged as out of network. Another reviewer has mentioned the same thing, so clearly this is their common practice. Please understand, some people don't want to deal with this but they getaway with it and ultimately I have wasted my time. I cannot be more grateful for finding Spear and working with PT Phaeleau Cunneen after my wrist fracture. I am an extremely active person so getting back on track after my injury was my number one priority and after only a couple of weeks with Phaeleau I was back to running and light strength training and even skiing. (Don't tell Phaeleau about the skiing) Phaeleau knew just how much to push me during our sessions and would never push me to the point of extreme pain or discomfort. He explained to me why my wrist felt the way it did and what I needed to do it get it back to normal. His knowledge and friendly demeanor really made me feel comfortable about the entire process. The facility is always pretty crowded but I always felt well attended to and welcomed by everyone on staff. I would actually look forward to my sessions because it was always such fun just talking to the staff and other patients while doing my exercises. While i think my PT is knowledgeable and a nice person, I do not like the SPEAR model...I've done PT a lot throughout my life due to many injuries - so have some experience around PT. They spend very little time on the myofascial release (the massage) and then do not observe you to ensure you are doing the exercises correctly... They overbook so that the PT is working with 3 patients at a time - and if it's one they are off writing notes rather than paying attention... I tried it... and will not be continuing. read more

I've been to numerous PT locations, and SPEAR was conveniently located to my work. You don't get a whole lot of individualized attention at SPEAR however. It's great when your therapist does spend time on you, but for the most part they leave you to your own devices. The place is always packed so be prepared for a complete lack of privacy. And maybe that's why there's barely anyone checking up on you. I can't recall a PT assistant's name for the life of me. My therapist Amelia was fabulous at everything she did however. She was caring, friendly and most importantly, strong! I always looked forward to her craniosacral (head and neck) massages, but they were much too short. I don't miss SPEAR after I stopped going here, but I do miss her. **I've found out she's not at SPEAR anymore (but rather Integrative Spine and Sports on the UWS), so I'll definitely never be back. read more

BEWARE of their practices with insurance fraud! Sent my daughter to Spear and told her to confirm they are IN NETWORK as they appear in the Insurance carrier's Website. They told her they do take our insurance, but then we got a bill, we noticed they had submitted out of network. I called them out on it and they argued with me that they explained to her that they didn't have a therapist that takes our insurance who is qualified to handle her specific issue. That conversation never took place. This is a frowned upon practice sometimes used by medical professionals as the insurance companies pay far more for an out of network claim than in-network claim. Spear got paid out over $1,900 from my insurance company for her visits when they would have gotten paid approx $400 if they had her see an in-network therapist. This is why patients pay so much for insurance. Shame Shame Shame! read more

Spear has absolutely terrible customer service. I had an appointment booked here for 4 weeks and on the day before my first appointment, they called me and said they will not accept my insurance. They also told me they would accept my insurance when I initially booked my appointment 4 weeks prior. I understand some offices do not take certain insurance providers. However, I have been waiting for 4 weeks and could have made other appointments during that time period. Patients should not receive a cancellation the night before they are scheduled for an appointment. The woman I spoke with was unapologetic and rude. Would not recommend. read more

I'm writing this update a little late- Cathy Campbell, Clinical Director at SPEAR, got in touch with me several months ago regarding my complaints. Cathy was very helpful. Apparently there had been communication issues between the front desk staff and other members of the organization. Cathy took my feedback very warmly and apologized for the trouble. She also helped me with the difficult issue of getting my fees reimbursed. It took some time, but eventually everything went through, and Cathy kept me updated throughout the process. While the issues that I had with SPEAR were serious ones, they honestly did a good job of fixing it, and it sounds like they've taken the feedback seriously. Overall I'd give them 4 stars. read more

I am so lucky that I found Spear and Dave Block. In the middle of December I fell on the sidewalk and broke my shoulder. The pain was like nothing I ever felt before and I was worried I'd never get proper use of my arm and shoulder. I had two surgeries with some complications. I am not great at physical fitness stuff in general and was dreading a slow rehab. I have a very busy life with a young son and a new job - and suddenly I could barely move. I started seeing Dave three times a week in January. He said it would be a long, painful recovery but he knew I could do it and he could help. I'm now five months in to my PT and my shoulder is better than expected. I wouldn't be this healthy and strong if it wasn't for Dave and Spear. I was so grouchy, afraid and in a lot of pain when I started and Dave and team pulled me through. The team at the front desk makes me smile and laugh. They are helpful in scheduling appointments and dealing with all the insurance stuff. It's amazing to remember when I first came here I couldn't even write - and they patiently filled out all the forms for me. As a gay guy, I sometimes worry about finding health care that are comfortable with LGBT people. This was no prob here. read more

If ever there was a time for everything to go right, it's when something has gone wrong with your body. After consulting 3 different doctors about the tendonitis in my hand, I was referred to Spear, and found my answers with Phaeleau. From the beginning, he was giving me the advice and answers multiple doctors weren't. As a computer programmer, I make my living off my hands, and he worked with me to understand not only the direct impact of what was happening, but the more subtle areas (like the neck, shoulders, etc) that could also be contributing to the problem. Since I couldn't stop using my hand, it was important to understand what small corrections could be made to minimize any strain. Phaeleau helped me with that, while listening when I had new thoughts about what might be compounding the problem. I've been going here for 4 months now, 1-2 times a week, and I don't have a bad thing to say about SPEAR. The staff are all excellent, and bend over backwards to help their patients. Multiple times, I have seen the staff fitting someone in when they show up on the wrong day. I never see this anywhere else, especially in New York. There is an overlap, and some busier times, when they are juggling more than one patient at a time, but you always get your personal time with the PT. The others who support the main PT are all awesome, and warm, as well as professional. The staff really engage people. Even for those of us on our quiet days, it's relaxing just listening to the conversations. Ask Phaeleau about great/classic movies, dogs, hiking, or his latest pun. Let's not forget the girls at the front desk. From my first visit onward, they have always be extremely helpful, and so easy to talk to. I talk to Amy the most, and she's on top of her game, as well as a joy to talk to, even on those days when I'm angry at the world for dragging me out of bed. While the front desk at most offices is forgettable, SPEAR's front office adds to every visit, on top of handling whatever insurance or scheduling questions I have. I feel everyone at SPEAR is putting their best foot forward, and working to get me back into working health. I always dread going so early in the morning, but soon after arrival, begin to feel good. By the time I leave, I'm definitely in higher spirits than any other day of the week. Their location is perfect, and has a nice view of the Grace Building. They're within a block of 3 different top NY Coffee Shops (Kaffe 1668, Bluestone Lane and Gregory), and a short walk from the Bryant Park 6th Ave Subway. In case you weren't convinced by their 4.5 star rating, if you need PT, go here. I've talked to my Doctor about Phaeleau (he's a highly respected hand specialist), and they love this guy. He's not only more down to earth than any New Yorker should be, he listens, he doesn't just focus on "the place where it hurts," and I genuinely believe he wants you to do well. SPEAR is amazing. The staff are all amazingly helpful and informative. They really work hard to make sure I am doing the right form and exercising correctly. I don't have a major injury, just back pain from long term bad posture. Laura diagnosed me well and has been working me hard on reinforcing my core and teaching me exercises I was always afraid to do. One other note, the staff will do whatever it takes to help you. No kidding, I lost my phone down the gap between the lockers (because I'm an idiot) and they were able to save it (in no small part thanks to Justin the crevasse expert!). Amelia Rivera has been my designated physical therapist since I first arrived in September 2014. Frankly, I couldn't be any happier at my sessions with Amelia; there's a few things I wanted to highlight from what I have seen from Amelia that I believe makes her a phenomenal physical therapist, as she deeply deserves recognition for going well beyond her core job responsibilities. First, I am a strong believer that results are indicative of how skilled a professional is in any arena. When I first came in, my shoulder was weak and lacked much strength, but after a handful of visits, I started to see strength return to my stabilizing muscles, and today, I can now perform pull-ups and push-ups as normal again. It is clear that my rapid results indicate that Amelia is a well talented and skilled physical therapist. Second, Amelia is not just my physical therapist, but also my adviser. I quickly learned that Amelia retained a strong knowledge base in terms of physical fitness. Whenever I had specific inquires, I never hesitated to ask Amelia because I knew I could rely on her honest expert opinion. In the process of rehabilitating my shoulder, I learned a tremendous amount from Amelia. Lastly, and what may be the most important point, is that any single individual can be an outstanding physical therapist, but Amelia, not only is she a high performing physical therapist, but is also someone that always brings an over abundance of energy to the workout floor for each and every client. Amelia's charisma and personable nature engages people and for me at least, makes me want to work out harder. This is a very important skill set requirement for me because I need a physical therapist that I can confide in. I feel like I can trust Amelia, and despite my, sometimes, reckless behavior, I know I can tell her in full confidence, which in essence, benefits me because Amelia can then assess my current situation to then tailor my workouts to fit my needs. I have been coming to Spear on and off for a year. I had a long break after a successful rehab for an arm issue in late 2014, but had to come back post-op for my wrist on the same arm. Even with a long break in between, upon my return in September 2015, I was greeted by the same friendly faces, a clean office/PT area, and was even remembered by my therapist, Phaeleau. He is one of two hand/wrist specialists for all of their locations. He is easy, approachable, and does not overdo the work on you till it hurts when you leave. Cannot say enough good things about him. He is helpful, funny, and makes you feel like it is not the end of the world to be dealing with a long road to recovery. As for the office, there have been times where I have been a bit early, couple minutes behind, or even cancel last minute. No one in the office was ever mad, rude, or took issue with this. Even though I can really only see Phaeleau because of my hand/wrist issue, plenty of others have stepped up to help set me up with things and show me how to do certain exercises or stretches. I have been treated well and never felt rushed in or out of the place...even invited to stay for a bit longer if I had the time [never really do]. I do think I was lucky to find Spear and to be able to transition back to them so easily. I know insurance can be a pain in finding a place, but luckily mine is taken here. They have good equipment and tools, even if some seem silly and you can buy them yourself. I have found that although I can do a lot at home on my own, there are things that I get out of my weekly visits that I lack the capability for. The best part is that they are like a big, goofy, fun family. Everyone interacts with each other and they are lively whether it is 7am or 2 in the afternoon. If there is a question, they are helpful to answer. If there is something you want to do, they'll try to make it happen. Just make sure to tell them not to put slow music on as that doesn't keeps everyone lively and awake! read more

What a difference physical therapy center can make... I first had my ACL reconstructed ~ 7 years ago and happened to re-tear it recently. One would think that a repeat ACL injury would be devastating, but in actuality as morose as it may sound I am actually very grateful for it and that is simply due to SPEAR Physical Therapy. From Day 1 of PT, my therapist Amelia was phenomenal (is there a word that exceeds phenomenal?); demonstrating knowledge, exuding rapport and professionalism and made each ensuing session a highlight of my weekly schedule. She was very caring with my regimen but also knew me well enough to really push me and knock down any The wonderful environment here at 44th St is just a testament to the foundation laid down by every single employee (just to name a few Cedra, Gina, Cathy, Joe, Brendan) and instills a sense of community to the patients. (I'd prefer to refer to us as recovering athletes) Every single horrible memory of my first round of PT I can say now has been replaced of fond workouts. Long story short, it's quite remarkable I came back from my 2nd ACL reconstruction much stronger than my 1st even though I was so much younger. it was several years apart and I owe a lot of that to SPEAR. After several sessions with a mediocre PT, a friend recommended SPEAR, and I am so grateful. Amelia is an amazing therapist. I came in with a herniated disc, unable to walk or sit without pain, completely demoralized and convinced I'd permanently broken myself at 30 and I'd never be right again. Amelia gave me hope on day 1, and though it was a long road to recovery, last weekend I successfully completed a Spartan race, pain-free (one of her favorite phrases). Spear PT feels like a family - other therapists were engaged with my progress, and it was a supremely supportive environment. Each session I got new exercises to do, which really helped me feel like I was making progress, despite then snail's pace. But looking back it's astonishing to see how far I've come and how much stronger I am now. I'm definitely a better athlete for it. Appointments are easy to schedule, with convenient text message reminders. They open at 7am, so I didn't have to duck out of work to get treated, which is a huge bonus. The PT aides (shout-out to Cedra!) were always helpful, demonstrating exercises I'd forgotten how to do, and keeping the space immaculately clean and organized. What a difference with other physical therapy centers: I was assigned one therapist, Jake (Jacob) who followed me through the treatment (rotator cuff injury); he was very knowledgeable, professional and very friendly, and my progress was really quick. I felt he really cared about his patients and has real skills Would definitely go back to him if I needed treatment. I got to know the other staff too, in particular the assisting staff. Update: SPEAR was created for idiots like me. After graduating, I reinjured my back helping a friend move, which brought me back. Amelia got me back on my feet in no time. She was patient with me, despite the fact that I was probably the worst patient in the world (showed up late, slept through appointments, complained about every exercise, arrived hungover . . .) A few months later . . . I started lifting heavier weights than I knew I should and hurt myself again (remember: idiot). And, once again, Amelia fixed me. She even wrote a note to my gym because I had forgotten to freeze my membership. I have been going to Spear Therapy on W 44th Street in Manhattan off and on for approximately six years for back pain. It is one of the friendliest environments I've come across in the medical field. Although David is my personal favorite, all of the therapists are well trained and show compassion for their clients. I started going to Spear in April of 2011 after my orthopedist suggested trying physical therapy before resorting to surgery for an old shoulder problem I've been living with for about 10 years. I had no idea what to expect, but when I got there, my consultation with Ben Englehart (I think that's his last name) was very informative and thorough. Over the course of the first 8-week program, and then the second 6-week program my doctor prescribed, my experience there was really great. Ben was a wonderful physical therapist -- very understanding of my abilities and limitations, and always very encouraging. I saw a lot of improvement in my range of motion and was able to throw a ball overhand for the first time in years without pain. I really feel like Ben and the people at Spear are the reason I was able to avoid getting surgery and get the range of motion back in my arm to make it possible for me to do everyday things without severe pain and restriction. The office staff is also very pleasant and helpful. They are flexible with making appointments and I never had trouble getting a time that fit my schedule. With my insurance plan, they were also very reasonably priced. The space is small, and some of the equipment could use updating, but those are easily fixable things. Don't let it deter you from their superior service. I would definitely recommend Spear to anyone looking for physical therapy services in the NYC area! read more

My experience at Spear was very positive. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and they spent a lot of time helping me sort out my injury. The therapist I spent the most time with was Kathryn and she was fabulous; smart, patient and motivating! It's been about a month since I "graduated" and I'm still feeling great. She sent me away with a lot of exercises I could continue to do on my own, which has been critical to my ongoing health. read more

I would not go back based on the front office experience. 1) I scheduled an appointment and confirmed my insurance with them. When I arrived they said that Aetna is out of network but I would only need to pay the "in network" price. It may have been a lower price but I still had to pay that out of pocket or go somewhere else. 2) They did not email me the information to fill out paperwork online like they said they would over the phone. My injured hand is my writing hand so I went through a good amount of pain filling out their forms instead. There was no offer for assistance from the three desk staff. 3) I got a call this morning saying they have my insurance card. My fault for not asking for it back and not checking before I left? Three strikes. The therapists all seemed very nice. 4/3/15 ... Updated to reflect correspondence on remedying the situation. I was still fleeced so verify you insurance before you go. I was fortunate to have been referred to Spear Physical Therapy, West 44th Street location, to rehab my knee following surgery. Most specifically, I feel lucky to have had Luc Richie as my physical therapist. Luc is one of the best PT professionals I've been around. He's extremely knowledgeable, has great people skills, takes the time to ask the right questions in getting to know his patients, listens very well and manages to find the proper balance between employing a conservative approach and knowing when to push a little harder. In less than 3 months, Luc got my knee strength, balance and full range of motion back to where it was pre-injury. In my post-op 3-month follow up, my physician was extremely pleased with the progress I made in such a short time period. Spear PT and Luc Richie are tops. I would highly recommend Luc to anyone in need of physical therapy! read more
