Koa in Spearfish SD is by far the best KOA we have stayed at! Not cramped in on top of each other.

Beautiful grounds ... well-spaced, grass-covered campsites with first-rate bathrooms, showers, and laundry-room facilities. Terrific staff, camp hosts, and groundskeepers. Daily campsite trash pick-up was an unexpected bonus. Campground backs up to a grassy open-space where deer visit every evening and a nature trail accesses nearby Spearfish Creek featuring more walking trails plus a large off-leash area for dogs. My only negative (one star subtraction) was the noise from the nearby (elevated) freeway which, of course, goes all night. Probably not an issue for large, self-contained RVs but maybe not the best location for tent campers or small trailers and vans. Location is convenient for day-trips to Spearfish town and waterfall-laced Spearfish Canyon, Black Hills/Rapid City attractions, and nearby Devil's Tower. read more

Leann, at the front desk, was extremely helpful during our stay and such a sweetheart. We happened to arrive at the beginning of a snow storm. She helped us find somewhere in town to fill up our propane as we were unable to leave for several days due to the cold weather. Due to frozen pipes we had no water but the site shower was always clean and coffee was always available. When it was time to leave the maintenance manager assisted my husband by supplying us with a ladder and shovel to remove snow and ice on the pop outs. read more

Comfortable, grassy, great camp store, daily ice cream social, very clean showers & bathrooms, large laundry facility, beautiful pool.

We used them again and they were great! They have a very good crew that show you to your assigned camping spot and make sure you get hooked up and set up. Showers and toilets were very clean. When we were there they were at maximum capacity. The only bad thing was the multiple campfires made it a little smoky. Rates were reasonable, they are definitely an asset to the KOA brand! read more

Very good to place to stay at I wouldn't want to stay here long term as it can get pricey but for the night it's a great stay, lots of things to do there with a nice trail, swimming pool and they come pick up your trash for you. Arrived late at night, hooked into the power and sewer and went to sleep. It was really quiet in the morning we walked around the facilities quickly everything is very clean and brand new highly recommended. Also the internet seemed to work great. read more

Nice place to stay. We'll groomed roomy pull through sites. Utility hookups in good shape and clean. Clear instructions for cable and wifi. Wifi was GREAT!!! They did a lot of work on that. Beautiful, I do mean beautiful KOA. Green grass at every site along with trees! Dog park is in grass! Only stayed one night but really wished we could have stayed more, we will be back for sure! We had a small problem with connecting to wifi, a wonderful lady came out to my camper and fixed our problem asap. She made me feel like I was not a pain. While she was at my camper she noticed our tv reception was poor and helped us find our antenna booster switch! Yes, very attentive, even loved on my lil doggy, even though he was barking at her. Spearfish/Black Hills KOA - RV Parks Near Me - Spearfish, South Dakota

BUYER BEWARE: There is NO AIR CONDITIONING in the camping cabins at this particular KOA. It was ungodly hot and sweltering in our cabin during our six day stay in July, 2011. Every other KOA we have ever stayed in has had a/c (when needed) and we have stayed in them all around the Country for business. When booking our reservation, the staff insisted that a/c was not necessary because "it just doesn't get that hot here and it cools down at night." This was not at all our experience; it was approaching or exceeding 100 degrees every day we were here and had to be quite a bit hotter inside the cabin (my guess is 120 degrees or more). We booked a five night stay for business (with our last day being for some sight-seeing) and when we realized how horrible the conditions were we requested to leave a day early and be refunded for our last night's stay. The owner seemed to have no compassion for our discomfort and simply kept saying that "it just doesn't get that hot up here and it cools down at night;" she also stated that she "would not issue a refund for 'weather'" and that "a fan was provided in each cabin" (an admission of poor conditions?). Too, when we checked in, the owner told us to make sure to not leave our dog alone in the cabin because of the heat; we opted to kennel our dog during our stay. For the price of these cabins ($60) they served no purpose during our stay except as a place to lay our heads at night and a miserably uncomfortable one at that. I cannot imagine a baby, a pregnant woman or an elderly person sleeping in these conditions (a neighbor who only stayed two nights complained to us that he was having trouble breathing because it was so hot). Truly in this day and age, one would think there would be some sort of law against renting a place with no a/c during such heat. Maybe someone will have to be hospitalized or die before the powers at be take notice. In my opinion, if you are traveling in the Spearfish area during the summer months, skip the camping cabins at this particular KOA and find a nice inexpensive hotel with air conditioning. read more

This is probably one of the cleanest koa's I have been to in a long time. The bathrooms are new and clean, the lawn is mowed and manicured. I really enjoyed the full hook up back in sites. The folks in the front office are friendly and it's well stocked in the location is perfect for Spearfish tourism. There's a little bit of highway noise but not much because of the trees but for most of it. There is also a beautiful 7 mile dirt trail that leads to the downtown Spearfish. Bikes and hikers with dogs are welcome on the trail. Don't hesitate to make a reservation here you will enjoy it. Site 54 has a pretty big puddle if it rains avoid this one. read more

Amazing campground! The employees were extremely friendly and helpful. We will be back for Sturgis 2016. Groundskeeper made sure all our hookups were hooked up and we were good. Awesome KOA run by a family. Everyone that works their is friendly, from the young lady that checked us in, to the older lady and the young man that work there. The young man saw me hooking up the black water/gray water hose and asked if I needed help, I was not having an issue but nice that he asked. Somewhere along the way we lost our key to the storage bin where the fresh water hose is located. I asked the same young man on the next day if they had a hose I could borrow and he brought one over right away. This was the first time we RV-ed, we rented an RV and this place was awesome!!! read more

We stayed here for two nights last week after driving all day from Yellowstone National Park. We had made last minute reservations, but they were still able to accommodate us with our 41ft fifth wheel. The campground is exceptionally clean and pet friendly. The "super sites" have fire rings, full hookups, 50amp service and cable TV. This would be a great base camp for the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Its an easy drive to all the local attractions. The staff was always cheerful, friendly , and helpful. The site itself is beautiful. They are new owners and have done many upgrades. we pulled in late in October for a night stay while traveling. Super nice people. Had a issue with my truck they pointed me to a great and HONEST mechanic who moved me up on the list to get my repair done 1st. Check out time is 11am we didn't get the truck fixed until after 2pm never charged extra and even asked if I needed anymore help. Definitely make this place your stop when traveling read more

Great location, clean bathrooms, laundry area and very friendly staff. Mature trees give shade at several of the sites. Fire pits at most sites or they allow you to use your own portable. We take our dog and when we are gone riding all day they will walk her! Highly recommend reservations as it fills up during the peak seasons...especially Sturgis bike rally. If your not a biker be SURE you know the dates (first 2 weeks of August), unless you like noise and crowds! read more

It was a wonderful campground the property managers did a great job making our stay enjoyable. We were not going to get there in time to check in so the lady checked us in over the phone and our paperwork was ready for us when we got there. The laundry, bath rooms and showers were very nice and very very clean. As we are tent camping this is important to us. The camp site was clean and very nicely mowed. Firewood was available for purchase. It was a wonderful stay and I would highly recommend it, for RV or tent campers! read more

We stayed here for 3 nights on a leisurely trip through the Black Hills. KOA's aren't generally our favorite places to stay as the facilities often tend to be old and run down, but we were travelling in late October and many campgrounds are closed for the season, the Spearfish KOA being the exception. I must say we were very pleasantly surprised. This park is like brand new! In talking to the owners (completely delightful people, by the way), we learned that they had purchased the park a couple of years ago in run down condition and have completely renewed it. They've done a great job. This is one of the nicest parks we've ever stayed in. 6 stars! read more

AWESOME!!!!! This KOA saved our vacation! After arriving at a DIFFERENT RV park (strong definition) and being extremely disappointed, we started to call around to hopefully find other accommodations for the next 6 days. I was greeted by a super, very upbeat staff member, who stated, we will get you in! Not only did they get us in, we had a gorgeous location, in probably the nicest RV park we have had the pleasure of frequenting. Trees, well maintained, access to trails, the kindest staff and on and on! We stayed an extra 3 days! We did not need the bathhouse, but I took a look at that also....fabulous! We can't wait to return next year for an even longer stay .....10 STARS! read more

Worst camping experience in 50 years! If you are an animal lover stay away from this place! For the first time in 50 years I was turned away because of the "breed" of my puppies....and they were puppies - 10 and 3 months. The woman who materialized to "inspect" my dogs...before I fully grasped what was going on....was a complete moron who actually thought she had some clue about what she was looking at. I honestly don't care that she was clueless about what my dogs were....she had no business deciding if a dog was "safe" simply by eyeballing it from a distance. She was arrogant and clueless....the worst combination. It turned out great though because we ended up at one of the most wonderful campgrounds that I have ever been at....the Spearfish City Campground. It was perfect....clean, spacious, bubbling streams running all through the park, clean modern restrooms, miles of paved and unpaved hiking trails through the campground and the surrounding woods, pleasant staff and best of all....deer meandering happily all thorough out the park. At night they seemed to be dancing in the moonlight on the green. A truly magical experience. So grateful that the KOA turned us down! read more

We stayed at this KOA over Mother's Day Weekend 2013. We rented a KOA Kabin and found it to be very clean and cozy. The manager left a space heater for us as the evenings were still cool. We found the manager to be very friendly and cordial. The bathroom/shower was clean and although everyone else camping was in an RV, we found our stay enjoyable. Avoid this place. Their website boasts a KOA 2012 Founders Award and 2012 Presidents Award. I don't know what the criteria is for those awards but whoever determines the recipients of those awards would be well advised to look a bit closer at this place. I will do my homework better next time I choose a campground. I did not do so before I stayed at this koa last weekend and I had a horrible stay. The owners yelled false accusations at us about how we drove in the campground and then sped around the place in their golf cart and automobile like there was a fire. When approaching us about their concerns they were literally pounding on our door and yelling and seemed to have limited ability to interact in an adult fashion. Dogs barked all night and quiet hours were not enforced. Our first day there they had no water for awhile and once the water was fixed they closed the restrooms for cleaning (an hour ahead of the posted cleaning time). We left for our day's activities with no showers. Their stated cleaning time for the restrooms is 10am, with a checkout time of 11am. Wouldn't a better cleaning time be 11am? There is limited shade, cleanliness is hit and miss and the shower facilities are not what we have come to expect of a koa. Not worth the money and verbal abuse. We will spend our money elsewhere next time. read more
