Yesterday afternoon I had my highlights refreshed by Sophia, followed by a cut and blowout by Paul, taking my shoulder-length bob to a short bob with gently angled bangs. On my walk home an unknown woman leaned out of the passenger side of a passing car and yelled, "Great haircut!" Spectrym is an attractive, full-service salon. I'm a big believer in having good hands. My hair is naturally straight and quite thick. She makes sure my hair has volume and is healthy. If I could give this place negative 500 stars I would for every dollar I spent in here for a failed cut and balayage. If you pride yourself in your hair and want to spare yourself heartache read this post. ... I was visiting NY and thought I'd give Julie at Spectrym a try since she had great reviews. Julie approached me and I showed her a picture which I have included below. Initially and during my appointment she hardly ever spoke to me which is rare of any hairdresser. She conducted herself in a very stoic and impersonal manner. Fast forward to her blow drying my hair I noticed my hair to be bright and reddish, even when wet. Once my hair was dried and styled I really started to panic and started to cold sweat. I asked Julie why was my hair red. I was sweating and felt light-headed. I asked her to give me a minute to collect myself and "wrap my mind over my new color" as she insisted it was brown. Side note, I had asked her to cut my bangs chin length which she recommended but once dried my bangs were shortened to my lips but now the least of my concern and upset about my color. It was reddish and bright! She tried to convince that SHE liked it and to go home and see what I thought. I told her I wanted it toned down. She said go home and if I wanted it fix I could return tomorrow. I told her again I am from out of town and again do not wish to return another day while vacationing. The problem with this woman is that she does NOT LISTEN TO HER CUSTOMER. She had me go up to the counter and pay $386. I walked back into the salon nearly in tears and asked to return tomorrow for a correction. At 4:00 next day appointment I cried and then Julie started to work on me at 4:40. Before then, daughter, friend and I explained to J. what I wanted. Showed her picture. Julie still insisting my current hair was brown...this should have alerted me. To make sure we were on the same page I also handed her a sample piece of hair from their own Goldwell samples and told her this is what I want. I believe it was color A4 (a "cool " color as she herself mentioned) repeatedly told her I do not want red. Julie told me, "You need to tell me what color you want, I can't be changing the color for you." What?! As if I want to process my hair repeatedly. So now it's past 2 hours of day #2 and she blow dried part of my hair (my bangs and part of a left front strand) I see it in the mirror---IT'S STILL REDISH! She convinces me and gaslights me to believe it is brown so I proceed to checkout with wet hair and was charged $114 for correction! I go out to my car with my daughter and her friend waiting and their reaction is, Why is it still red?! I really hesitated but went back to the salon with the girls and asked the receptionist for a refund. I was now shaking, crying and in a fog. I was so upset and shaking. Julie came to the front and insisted to us that it was brown and not reddish. Another customer had asked my daughter why was I crying (me sitting there in distress) so they showed her pictures and she was looking at my hair and agreed it was not the same. Julie started to speak to this particular customer in their language and the lady then told Julie, "This is your customer. Listen to your customer." Julie walked away from her. Julie would get anyone within a 2 inch radius involved that she thought would be on her side--- NO ONE sided with this woman! Once she would realize this she would turn away from them and continue to dispute with us. I walked outside the salon and kept crying uncontrollably on the phone with my boyfriend. I was living a nightmare! I was shaking and crying in public inside and outside the salon. I went back inside and saw Julie put her hand in my friend's face as they argued about the color of my hair. They told me they couldn't give me a refund. I asked to speak to the owner and according to them there was no possible way to reach the owner. She was out on vacation for an entire month. Julie and the receptionist told me she would fix my hair and make it darker. Darker?! I had lost all faith in Julie was not going to dare let her touch my hair for the third time! Julie is of the mentality and energy of THE CUSTOMER IS NEVER RIGHT. Do yourself a favor and do not go to this salon. The hairdresser coupled with the service are impossible. I hate what she has done to my hair! After a hefty price of $500 and to not stand behind their work, these people are running rogue and down right terrible! Go elsewhere. This salon deserves a review all over social media and if they want me to take this down they need to reach out with an apology. read more

Just came here for the first time and will definitely be back. I had a haircut by Julie who did an amazing job. She did exactly what I asked for and she was fast(but not rushed). Super friendly service by everyone and beautiful salon. I have extremely thick hair that is normally hard for stylists to work with and for that reason have been going to the same place in Soho for over 7 years, just to pay for no surprises. But when I noticed this place in my neighborhood for such an affordable price, I decided to give it a shot. I have reviewed this amazing salon a few times but I am compelled to do it again! They have moved a few doors down from their previous location and their new digs are FABULOUS! Super modern, all done is beautiful black and white, simply gorgeous! Nanette continues to be my girl! She has been doing my color, my highlights and my cuts for nearly 30 years (how can that even be???) and I walk out of their every 6 weeks feeling magnificent. I live in Manhattan and could easily go to a salon closer to home, but the trip to Forest Hills to go to this wonderful salon and be treated like a queen by Nanette and the other staff members is soooo worth the trip! read more

DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR DONE HERE! I had extensions installed in July, 7/17 by Nanette (Natala/ nataly Minelli) and had to take them out two weeks later. I was told I was getting Great Length extensions. That is advertised in the salon and online. They were not... They put another extensions brand in my hair. Which they REFUSE to tell me what brand it is. That's FRAUDULENT misrepresentation of a product. I've been told by Great Lengths corporate that these are not their products and they were never an authorized salon. These extensions were put in INCORRECTLY and caused damage to my scalp. I've gone to another hair dresser to take them out because Grace refused to let me come in on 8/3. I was contacting Grace, the owner for a week to remove them. They are not properly applied. There is a large piece of hair attached to the extension. It's not density to density. It was done fast and not to match my hair density. It hurts. My scalp is irritated. As dermatologist said it's scalping my scalp. These bonds should not be itchy two weeks after removal. The sections are too big and don't match the density of my hair. That's why my natural hair is coming out in chunks due to this. My hair is almost making a "fan" shape "upside down triangle" it should not be falling like that it should be straight up and down to match the size of the hair being attached. The sections should be super clean in a row, which they are NOT. I should be able to have 360 movement of the bonds, which I don't. I'VE LOST SO MUCH OF MY REAL HAIR FROM THESE EXTENSIONS. As you can see in the last picture. Traction alopecia. That is the only reason I noticed something was wrong with my hair. And contacted other hair dressers. MY HAIR CAME OUT WITH THESE BONDS IN CHUNKS. After all this trouble they still refuse to refund me the full amount I paid. Which was $980. This place is a SCAM! read more

I love this place and have been going since 1991. I see Nanette for my cut, color, and highlight. Nanette is professional, funny, and amazingly talented. She always listens to my endless requests and takes the time to look at all the pics of the styles I am thinking about getting. Nanette tells me honestly what will work best with my type of hair and bone structure. I moved to Stamford, CT four years ago and still make the trip four times a year to see Nanette. It takes me 3 hours to get there each way, and every minute is worth it! The salon is also clean and everyone is very nice. There is light at the spectrum end of a turbulent storm! This was my third attempt all back-to-back on the same day as a walk-in client for a measly simple hair cut. I do not have an appointment when I walked in. Without knowing the craftsmanship work quality or their prices and with the added pressure of time plus the smell of sheer desperation I need to get a hair cut that I forgo my budget. The front desk receptionist was friendly and welcoming with sincere understanding and humane compassion. Yes, I begged to be seated and to be taken in by a hair stylist. Erik, my assigned hair stylist kindly took me into his seat to cut my hair and styled it with curls. Despite of my somewhat indecisiveness, Erik listened and gave me a sexy chic look which I love. At an utter shocking $62.70 for cut and style (including sales tax), given my dire circumstances, I had no choice but to eat the phenomenal cost. Spectrym does not appear extremely busy unlike other nearby competitor hair salons and are honest to be sincere valuing clients' time. The hair salon is clean with a warm environment. Currently living as a red and yellow striped circus tent: After a lengthy consultation, complete with pictures, information about my hair type and color history, and desired upkeep, Elena did not execute a single request correctly. My request was for her to refresh my grown out ashy balayage with a root melt and, subtle balayage, and babylights around the face. Instead she wiped out all existing highlights with a gold base color (*cringe*) and did a full head of chunky foils, ratted at the roots. When it produced very brassy results (as I had warned), she toned me for about an hour. The final salon product looked passable, but obviously it washed out quickly at home. I am now left with jagged, chunky highlights with hot roots. It took 5 hours and cost $300. It was my special treat after COVID. Please visit me at the circus tent and be advised: Elena does not follow instructions, though the salon itself is clean and friendly. read more

I wish she would've been honest because later on she said she has never done something like this. $250 later my hair is 3 different colors...the cut was great which is why this place got 1 star. I had no choice but to go to this salon because my old salon closed. I have been using my haircutter for over 20 years and my colorist for about 10 years. This has nothing to do with either of them! This is directly for the owner. Today I had my hair colored and I had to blow my hair myself because I did not have an appt. for a cut. This was never a problem before but today the "owner" was there and was visibly annoyed. She went over to my colorist to tell me that I shouldn't be "doing a fancy blow out". I wouldn't call using a brush and a blow dryer fancy to straighten my hair. Today is extremely humid and I needed my hair to be dried not to frizz. You would think that the owner would want you to leave the salon looking like you had your hair done properly instead of frizzy and unkept. The salon was not crowded at the time and there were plenty of empty chairs. I would have went downstairs if it was a problem, because no one was down there as well. But, this treatment is unacceptable. I am not exactly sure what the problem was today but I am extremely disgusted with the treatment I received. Shame on you and your unprofessionalism. read more

No wait. Was able to schedule a haircut last-minute (this was a Friday afternoon) and didn't feel rushed at all. Yvonne was wonderful! Took her time assessing my hair, walking me through what she was doing, and giving me tips on how to make my hair look its best once I got home (without pushing any products on me). I was also incredibly impressed by how warm the rest of the staff was. They even gave me an impromptu hair color consultation. Very friendly environment. I recently booked an appointment for a Sunday morning blow out in preparation for my bridal shower. I had made the appointment about a week in advance, and also confirmed the day before. I arrived on time and was greeted, but told to wait just "a few minutes" until the stylist arrived. I waited for about 35 minutes without any other reassurance from the staff that the stylist was actually coming. I wasn't even taken to the sink to get washed, which would have at least saved some time. I could not wait any longer, obviously, because I need to be present at my bridal shower. I had no choice but to leave and go home so I could get dressed and put on some make up. Time wouldn't allow for any more waiting. I was so upset and disappointed that I had to go to this celebration without a nice hair style. I just wanted to look special for this day. In the beginning just for wax and nail service, and my kids haircuts, but later I got tired of commute to the city and decided to try a colorist. Diana is great, great attention to detail and friendly. Overall always a good service experience. The actual studio did some renovations recently, but I didn't see much of a change inside. My biggest complaint would be the lighting is terrible- I think they use florescent lighting scattered about the ceiling that just seems wrong to happen in a salon, since lighting is so critical for hair and makeup. I think if they upgraded to professional lighting it would make a huge impact. read more

Zero stars if possible. Never experienced anything like this: Was booked over the phone with "Nanette" for highlights touch up all around, not by request either . When I got into her chair she made a huge fuss with an unprofessional attitude in front of everyone about not having been booked enough time for a "consultation" on a full head when I started explaining what I wanted done. (How is that my problem ? And did u forget I'm a CLIENT) Management in this place clearly needs to educate their employees on good customer service and not only $$$. Terrible experience I ended up walking out after they tried to make me feel guilty over this and were going back n forth over who booked me and what I want. I had an amazing experience at Spectrym. I took a chance and just walked in and ask if they take walk ins. They were able to take me without an appointment. The atmosphere is so lovely. Very chic. The receptionist was so kind and helpful. The lady that washed my hair was excellent, so funny :) and offered me something to drink. First class personal service for a client and free Wi-Fi! Mercedes cut my hair and gave me a very sleek lob. She took a lot of time on my hair. As it is very heavy and needs some extra work. In comparison I spent over 100 dollars at an Aveda salon last year. The woman set a timer for 30 minutes and when the timer went off I was done. My hair wasn't even cut right! More expensive does not equal better. I am so happy I took that chance. They have a client for life now. Thank you ladies for making my first experience the best experience ever!
